Oh, the NES... simpler times. Blowing into cartridges, power gloves, cheat codes, Minus World, R.O.B. and The Wizard. It was a time when people could make Adventure Island, a game in which a rotund man clad only in tiny green shorts and a white cap went running, jumping and skateboarding around the forests and caves of the South Pacific. And, with the help of a fairy called Honey Girl, he saved a princess from a witch doctor. Time-travelers, take yourselves to the Wii U this week and go skate some clouds. If you want something a bit fresher on Wii U, Teslagrad offers Metroid-like platforming with a dollop of electromagnetism, steampunk and Eastern European art. There's also the kung-fu rhythm of Kickbeat, and on 3DS you've got first-person, old-school dungeon crawler The Keep. Apart from that, Nintendo's pre-Super Smash Bros. sale is also worth a look. Running through until the release of Smash on 3DS, the big N's discounting games starring the fighter's roster. Check out the Smash sale here and all the other discounts, and jump past the break for the full list of new releases.

  • Electromagnetic platformer Teslagrad gears up for PS4

Teslagrad, Rain Games' 2D puzzle-platformer that sadly isn't a course based on 1980s rock band Tesla, is coming to PS4 in a boxed edition. The new physical editions are also headed to previously announced platforms of Wii U, PS3, Vita and PC, and publisher Soedesco has confirmed a US release. Rain says to expect copies to be available in Q4. Teslagrad is set in a steampunk-inspired take on "old Europe," and there's certainly plenty of Eastern European imagery on show, as well as an array of gears, tesla coils and what have you. As for how it plays, there's clearly a bit of Metroid to its electric array of collectible items and its mixture of puzzle-platforming and combat. If you'd prefer to try it now rather than wait for the new ports, it's already out on Steam and avaialble for $10. [Image: Rain Games]

The Humble Store is currently hosting a particularly patriotic event, dubbed the DRM Freedom Sale, to celebrate the Fourth of July. The sale features games like Broforce, Surgeon Simulator 2013 and Retro City Rampage, discounted by up to 85 percent. Not only can you feel free to use the money you'll save on some sweet explosion-rockets, but you can feel good about yourself too, as 10 percent of the proceeds go to charity. You might want to hurry though; like a red, white and blue firework in the night sky - this deal will only exist for a short while. At the time of writing, there are just more than three hours left. Orlando-based PC game subscription service IndieBox has launched its first boxed product in an effort to fight the "race to the bottom" syndrome that often sinks indie game pricing. Customers who subscribe to IndieBox (starting at $14.99 monthly, plus shipping), will receive a deluxe-edition, boxed indie game for Windows, Mac, and Linux in the mail every month that includes an array of bonus items like buttons, stickers, and soundtrack CDs. The service's debut game Teslegrad recently shipped out to subscribers in a Sega Genesis-styled box and USB cartridge casing. Featured games are not disclosed until monthly products hit subscriber mailboxes, and five additional games are planned for shipment in the coming months. Next month's boxed product, due to ship on June 20, is available for pre-order through May 31. [Image: IndieBox]

  • Picturesque platformer Teslagrad lights up PS Vita this summer

Though its name may conjure up some scenario where you help guide Nikola Tesla through the social pitfalls of high school, Teslagrad is a non-linear 2D puzzle platformer where players must explore the abandoned Tesla Tower in a steampunk-inspired alternate reality vision of old Europe. Teslagrad's plot revolves around a young boy and totalitarian king who rules over his nation with no mercy, not an inventor portrayed by David Bowie on film. We just didn't want you to be disappointed when Teslagrad launches on PS Vita this summer. The only place to grab Teslagrad currently is on Steam. The game, available for PC, Mac and Linux, was cleared through Steam Greenlight last summer and made its debut on Valve's digital distribution platform in December. Developer Rain Games is already working on a PS3 port. [Image: Rain Games]

Nintendo has laid out its 2014 indie eShop lineup for the next few months: Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid has two games up for 3DS, Moon Chronicles in March and Treasurenauts in May. Wayforward's Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is due out in Q1, and Mojo Bones' side-scrolling bouncer, Siesta Fiesta, is due out in March, both for 3DS. Wii U's "Japan steam rock" platformer, Wooden Sen'Sey, is targeting a February launch, while Nicalis' 1,001 Spikes is due out in Q1 for both Wii U and 3DS. Nihilumbra, Scram Kitty and His Buddy on Rails and Squids Odyssey should land in March for Wii U. Teslagrad is aiming for March or April, and QUBE Director's Cut should launch in April, each for Wii U. For those who want to get their indie gaming on right now, the eShop's two-week Super Indie Connection Sale is live, offering a handful of games for 60 percent off, if you already own one of the games in the sale or if you buy one at full price. Sale games include Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, Spin the Bottle, Toki Tori 2 and Mighty Switch Force.
