Some six years after it hit retail shelves, you can now download Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots from the PlayStation Store. As such, you can now sort of ruin one of the game's most memorable moments. We're of course talking about that tongue-in-cheek bit about the PS3's Blu-Ray capabilities, which arguably loses its edge when you're not playing from a disc. So, it's another Metal Gear Solid moment that only really works when playing the game in its original form. Not that that's a bad thing. If you don't fancy shelling out $20 on a 30GB-ish download, there is other, fresher stuff on the PS Store. Guilty Gear Xrd Sign is the major new release of the week, and you can grab the fighter for $60 on PS4 and $50 on PS3. Also new on PS4 this week are free-to-play shooter Loadout, Tetris Ultimate ($10), and Super Mega Baseball ($20, cross-buy with PS3)

Mario Kart 8's first major content pack is available now, and for $8 and 1GB of Wii U space you can fill your racing roster with the likes of Link, the Master Cycle, and a circuit based on F-Zero's Mute City. Or, to summarize for numerophiles, three characters, four karts and eight tracks. Don't forget, you can also get the DLC as part of the $12 package that bundles in a pre-order for the second pack, due in March 2015. The eShop's not just about Mario Kart 8 this week... 'cos Mario Kart: Super Circuit brings GBA racing to the Wii U Virtual Console. We josh, kartophobes, there's plenty of other stuff to download. There are the console and handheld editions of Sonic Boom, the Wii U port of pop-up beauty Tengami (check out our impressions of it on iOS), and the belated stateside arrival of Pokemon Trading Card Game on 3DS Virtual Console. Since it's November and another one of those content-packed weeks, our digestible list of new releases should prove handy. You'll find that below the break. and if you're after sales and permanent discounts, point your clicker here.

  • Tetris Ultimate hits 3DS in November, cheaper via eShop

Tetris Ultimate makes a beeline for 3DS on November 11, Ubisoft has announced. The game will launch on Xbox One, PS4, Vita and PC in the winter, locking in a slight delay for consoles, which previously had a summer launch window. On 3DS, Tetris Ultimate is cheaper as a digital purchase, $20 compared with $30 at retail. The digital price reduction makes sense on the surface, since that version doesn't have to factor in costs associated with a physical release, but it is a fairly unprecedented move. The Vita has boasted a few reduced-price digital games in the past, but largely, publishers offer one price for downloaded and physical games. The 3DS version of Tetris Ultimate includes four single-player Challenge modes, as outlined by Ubisoft: "Master" has Tetriminos drop instantly and appear at the bottom, "Rotation Lock" makes the orientations of the Tetriminos random and frozen in one position, "Escalation" has players clear more lines as the game levels up, and "Invisible" makes the Tetriminos invisible as they drop to the bottom.

Ubisoft announced that its upcoming revamp of the classic block-stacking puzzler Tetris will feature platform-exclusive challenge modes when it hits the Nintendo 3DS this fall. The 3DS version of Tetris Ultimate includes a "Master" mode inspired by Arika's Tetris: The Grand Master, challenging players to form lines with blocks that drop instantly and appear at the bottom of the screen. Tetris Ultimate also features a "Rotation Lock" mode that freezes falling pieces in random orientations, an "Escalation" mode that demands players clear more lines as levels ramp up in difficulty, and an "Invisible" mode that turns blocks invisible as they approach the bottom of the screen. Tetris Ultimate is also slated to launch for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this summer. A digital release for the PlayStation Vita and PC platforms will follow in the fall. [Image: Ubisoft]

Tetris Ultimate will drop into the 3DS' library this fall in the UK, according to a release schedule shared by Ubisoft. The shape-aligning classic includes four-player multiplayer and six game modes: Marathon, Endless, Ultra, Sprint, Battle and Power-up Battle. Ultimate's initial press release also states that the puzzler "captures and saves your play style, allowing you to always be able to play with or against your friends, even when they are offline." In other words, you won't even have to be around to annihilate your friends in shape-stacking. Sounds efficient! Vita owners recently learned they'll be counting Ultimate as an option in the fall, while PS4, Xbox One and PC owners were acknowledged during the game's announcement. With its gradual descent toward us, Ultimate is certainly the newest block on the grid, but we still wouldn't mind seeing the excellent Tetris DS appear on the Wii U's Virtual Console at some point. The next entry in the saga of longstanding falling block puzzler Tetris will continue its tradition of appearing on handheld platforms, as Tetris Ultimate will launch on Vita this fall. Announced last week, Tetris Ultimate includes four-player multiplayer and six different modes. The game will hit Vita alongside PC after it reaches Xbox One and PS4 this summer. The game celebrates a major anniversary: Tetris just celebrated 30 years of love, life and the liberation of blocky lines. [Image: Ubisoft]

Let's face it, the new generation of consoles isn't really here until there's Tetris on them. Tetris Ultimate is the latest-iteration of the iconic block dropper, and it's coming to Xbox One and PS4 this summer, followed by PC in the fall. It features multiplayer for up to four players (Ubisoft's wording indicates that includes online at least) and six self-descriptive modes, namely Marathon, Endless, Ultra, Sprint, Battle and Power-up Battle.
