Toshiba TG02 hands-on
We were all over Toshiba's drop dead thin and gorgeous TG01 last year, so naturally a chance to peek at the rumored TG02 first hand was something we couldn't pass up. Very little is new here, the touchscreen technology has seen resistive swapped with capacitive, the device has become a wee bit smaller while retaining the monster 4.1-inch display, and some 3D touches have been added to the SPB Mobile Shell-skinned Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Like its older sibling, the handset is still a thing of beauty and the 1GHz Snapdragon does make it all purr along very nicely -- and while the UI isn't really a custom one -- we like the ability to flip between pages kinda like iPhone and Android do now. All in, this is a pretty decent effort, and removing some of the pain that was the resistive display can only make the TG02 better. Follow on for a tour and a gallery of shots. %Gallery-85570%
Toshiba updates TG01 handset with the TG02
Toshiba's just let slip its MWC press, and here's what we've got: the TG01's successor... the TG02. It's a minor update to the original, and yes -- it's exact to that early prototype roadmap leak we saw way back in April. On offer here, we've got this 9.9mm badboy with a 4.1-inch capacitive WVGA touchscreen, 1GHz processor, and a newly retooled 3D menu to boot, running Windows Mobile 6.5. All in all, as we said, a pretty minor update to the handset. There's no firm information for now as to when the TG02 will launch, or how much it'll cost. We'll let you know when we do. Toshiba TG02 lives, drops by the FCC
Before the Nexus One and the HD2, there was the Toshiba TG01, sprinting along with a 1GHz Snapdragon in its belly and a 4.1-inch front end. Alas, that phone was hamstrung by a resistive touchscreen and a poorly thought-out skin atop an even worse OS (WinMo 6.1), but even by today's standards its hardware spec is top notch. Color us intrigued, then, to find its successor finally making its FCC debut -- with Bluetooth, GPS and WiFi (802.11b/g) connectivity in tow and a case outline suggesting some earlier leaked shots might still be accurate. It's a quad-band GSM handset, though from the tests we've seen it appears to sadly lack 3G frequencies for the US. The marketing name has also been confirmed as the TG02 and with MWC 2010 fast approaching, who's to say we're not going to have a brand new Toshiba handset to fawn over? Go past the break for more.
Toshiba TG02 earns WiFi certification, still unclear what it is
The Toshiba TG02's strange path to reality continues to unfold with a fresh Wi-Fi Alliance certification to shove under its belt alongside that FCC approval it earned a few months back. Of course, it wasn't called the TG02 back then -- it was known only by the more cryptic TM5-E01, a phone alleged to be a Windows Mobile clamshell despite the TG01-ish external photos provided with the filing -- but at any rate, it seems that we're talking about the same thing here. There's not a lot of additional detail to go on here, but it's encouraging to see that Toshiba's still hard at work besting its already-awesome first Snapdragon model -- and if it really is a clamshell, that'll be sure to bring out a whole trove of HTC Star Trek fans who've been in hiding for a year or two. Toshiba TG02 and TG03 shots surface
We like where this is headed. Toshiba seems poised to capitalize on its incredibly aggressive TG01 form factor, with the TG02 slated for Q4, and the TG03 for some time after that. We already got the skinny on the new handsets, along with the QWERTY-equipped K01 and K02 counter parts, and now we've got a few new shots of the TG series to keep things interesting. It's all a little low-fi at the moment, but while the TG03 looks like the most basic of renders, the TG02 shot (above) seems somewhat photographic in nature -- just think if Mr. Blurrycam had some sort of fixation for dotted lines.Read - TG02 leaked shotsRead - TG03 leaked shots
Toshiba's leaked product roadmap gets us hot, extra bothered by fuel-cell powered L01 MID
If the roadmap posted after the break is to be believed (and we think it is) then Toshiba is set to capture a lot of attention with its Snapdragon-based handhelds over the coming year. Techblog.gr has what it claims to be the Toshiba Device Roadmap through 2010. They've shown us a PowerPoint sample off-line that seems to support the claim. Of course, this isn't the first time Tosh has leaked an entire product cycle and the named devices align nicely with some of the prototypes Toshiba was showing-off at CES in January (see gallery below). Toshiba was already off to a good start in 2009 with its incredibly thin 4.1-inch TG01 running atop Qualcomm's snapdragon platform. It just gets better from there. First we've got the TG02 (launching in Q4) update to the TG01 that adds IPX4 water resistance without changing the specs or the dimensions. The TG03 ups the ante again with the inclusion of a 3-channel speaker for a better video experience. Also in Q4, Tosh looks ready to launch a 15-mm QWERTY slider version of the 9.9-mm TG01 with new capacitive (!) touchscreen called the K01. All other specs look unchanged including WinMo 6.5. Next is the K02 clamshell with primary 3.5-inch WVGA display and QWERTY on the inside coupled with a secondary LCD and 10-key on-screen keypad on the outside. The K02 features a resistive touchscreen, HSPA data, and same QSD8x50 chipset found in the TG01 (and all the other devices on this roadmap). Last, but by no means least, is the 7-inch L01 looking every bit the love-child of a Nokia N800 and HTC Advantage. The very same device that was shown powered by a DMFC (fuel cell) at CES in January. Interesting since Toshiba has promised a consumer device powered by a fuel cell before March of 2010. Unfortunately, it's limited to WinMo 6.5 (with a hint of a Windows Mobile 7 in 2010) and the same WVGA resolution seen on the smaller screens when it launches.
