Siliconera discovered new Square Enix trademark registrations on both the European and US trademark databases for something called "The After Years." While it could be anything, this title is extremely similar to the subtitle of the Final Fantasy IV sequel for cell phones, Final Fantasy IV: The After, and could signify an upcoming release of the game outside of Japan. We last heard vague rumors about an international release for The After back in September.Siliconera points out that a similar registration for Crystal Defenders predated the US iPhone adaptation of that mobile game, and that since then, a WiiWare version has been released, and PSN and XBLA versions announced. The After, as well, could be ported to a more US-friendly platform. Or, of course, this trademark could be for something else entirely.

It doesn't look like Square Enix is spending much time on the Wii, but rumor has it that the company may change their tune and throw the little white console one of its favorite bones: a port. Producer Takashi Tokita of Final Fantasy IV The After: Return of the Moon -- the game's mobile sequel -- recently dropped some hints that the game may be making its way here in some form. "Currently [the sequel] is available for mobile phones in Japan. We'll do our best to make this game available for our overseas audiences as well," he said. So your first thought would be the DS, right? Not according to the folks at RPG Site, who tapped mysterious (and unnamed) sources at Square Enix in their quest for more information. The result? Hints that the game may be reformatted for Wii. We would assume WiiWare, but who knows; they're porting Chrono Trigger, after all, without a hint of a graphical upgrade.Right now, this is the king rumor in all of rumorland, meaning it's completely out there and not too reliable, but it's interesting, to say the least. Have any thoughts on the chances of this one?[Via videogaming247]

  • Square Enix announces Final Fantasy IV sequel!

... for cell phones. In February, Square Enix will release Final Fantasy IV: The After -- Return to the Moon for FOMA 903i and better cell phones on NTT DoCoMo's network, with a release on au's phones to follow a month later. The game stars Theodore, a descendent of reformed Dark Knight Cecil, and takes place on the moon. None of the things we just said matter, because those cell phones are way more powerful than anything we've got outside Japan, and we are approximately 0% likely to see this game, ever.Yes, it is a crime and an insult that this game is not on the DS. Like it or not, cell phones are pretty much the only mobile device that Japan has more of than DSes, and the only device for which Square Enix could farm out a cheapo sequel to a major Final Fantasy game and get away with it.
