If F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is a commentary on the American Dream, Slate's The Great Gatsby: The Video Game continues that narrative in the most straightforward, nihilistic manner. In short, you're on a boat and there's a green light at the end of the screen, mimicking the green light at the end of Daisy's dock in the novel. Largely, that light is regarded as representing hope. Using minimalist controls – right and left arrows on the keyboard – in The Great Gatsby: The Video Game, guide Gatsby across the rocky waters and to the green light. If you can. Spoilers: You can't. Pippin Barr would be so proud. This is not to be confused with the Great Gatsby NES-inspired game, the Baz Luhrmann movie coming out in May, or anything on Sparknotes.

We're not about to suggest that you play the new "NES version" of The Great Gatsby instead of actually reading the book. Reading Fitzgerald's classic is simply part of the American curriculum. If we had to do it, so do you. Still, everyone needs a break from reading, and you might as well spend yours playing this delightful throwback game created by Charlie Hoey and Pete Smith. Be sure to check out the "vintage" magazine ad and instruction booklet images while you're at it. Be warned: This Flash game probably won't prepare you for your English teacher's test (but there's always the CliffsNotes for that); we don't remember Nick tossing his fedora at evil crabs in the book, for example. That said, the game would probably make for a much more interesting class discussion.

Prepare yourself for the best, most enthralling gaming experience of your life. No, it's not the newest-fangled of the fangles, it's not the latest tech around. It's just The Great Gatsby, lovingly squeezed into an NES game (well, it's really a stylized Flash game, but you know what we mean). The game itself is sort of a cross between Castlevania and Super Mario Bros., and that's just fine with us. In fact, it's the greatest thing we've seen all week. Hit up the source link and get to wasting the rest of your day.
