You didn't have to wait long to find out when the fourth Matrix movie will be ready. Warner Bros. has set the sequel's release date for May 21st, 2021, or right smack in the middle of blockbuster movie season. It clearly has confidence that the revived sci-fi franchise will pan out. Not only that, but the title is scheduled to arrive the same day as John Wick 4 -- if you can't get enough Keanu Reeves, you'll be in paradise.

November is a colossal month in the streaming ecosystem, with heavyweight newcomers Apple TV+ and Disney+ both making their debuts. Netflix doesn't plan to go quietly into the night though, as it has plenty of major titles coming to its platform over the month. Most notably, Martin Scorcese's latest mob epic The Irishman will hit Netflix November 27th -- just in time for Thanksgiving weekend. Also on the docket are The King, starring Timothée Chalamet (November 1st), and season two of The End of the F***ing World (November 5th).

You owe it to yourself to see 'The Matrix' in theaters

Has there been a movie more singularly influential than The Matrix in the past 20 years? It transformed action movies forever, tying together anime and Hong Kong film influences in a stylish CG-infused science-fiction package. It proved you could make a blockbuster that trusted mainstream audiences to understand complex storytelling, paving the way for films like Inception. And, though it wasn't as clear in 1999, Lana and Lilly Wachowski were clearly tapping into our anxieties over being trapped in an always-connected, tech-obsessed society.

Yes, you read that correctly. About 16 years after the last movie in the series, Warner Bros. has confirmed work on a fourth movie in The Matrix universe. And it doesn't appear to be a spinoff -- Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will star in the picture. Only one of the Wachowski sisters (Lana) is involved, but she'll direct, co-write and co-produce.

'The Matrix' returns to theaters August 30th with Dolby Vision and Atmos

The Matrix is coming back to theaters to (belatedly) mark its 20th anniversary, and you might have a reason to watch even if you're not overwhelmed with nostalgia. The sci-fi classic will start a one-week run on August 30th at AMC's Dolby Cinemas across the US in its fully modernized form, complete with a Dolby Vision picture and Dolby Atmos audio. You've had access to those at home, but this is the first time you can experience the movie that way on the big screen -- those bullet-dodging scenes should be that much more immersive.

It's been almost three-and-a-half years since players were forced to unplug from The Matrix Online for the last time, but the memories and music remain. When I first was wowed by The Matrix back in 1999, the dark, action-packed score became an instant favorite of mine. It's a franchise in which the sound is critical to the feel of the films, and it makes sense that this would extend to the MMO. The makers of MxO went to great lengths to retain the look, story, and audio of the films, which is why the trilogy's composer, Don Davis, was called in to create the music for the game. While the films are more dependent on an orchestra for the score, Davis went with a heavy synth sound for the MMO. It's still quite Matrix-y, however, and pretty dang cool to discover (or discover all over again). Let's boot up this ancient laptop that I found and see if we can coax a few tunes out of it before Windows 98 shuts down on us for good.

  • Alt-week 10.13.12: is the Universe a simulation, cloning dinosaurs and singing mice

Alt-week peels back the covers on some of the more curious sci-tech stories from the last seven days. Are you reading this? Seriously, are you? Sure, we know you think you are, but what if you're just a sub-feature of a complex computer program. A sprite, nothing more than the creation of software. The problem with this question is, how would you ever know? You wouldn't, right? Well, not so fast there. Turns out, maybe there is a way to unravel the matrix (if there is one). It'll come as no surprise, that this is one of the topics in this week's collection of alternative stories. Think that's all we got? Not even close. We'll explore the truth behind cloning dinosaurs, as well a rare performance by singing mice -- all before dinner. Or is it really dinner? This is alt-week.

  • Sky bags exclusive rights Warner Bros. movie catalog, makes LoveFilm and others wait

Sky has bested its broadcast and video-on-demand rivals by signing a deal with Warner Bros. for exclusive rights to its films in the UK and Ireland. Once the six-month cinema window has elapsed, each new flick (including Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises) will remain Murdoch-only for a full year before arriving on LoveFilm and its kind. Meanwhile, back-catalog titles like The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix will remain locked in the partnership's walled garden for an undisclosed period of time. Good news if you're a Sky customer, we suppose, and not if you're not.
