Theatrhythm Curtain Call continues to ignore its Final Fantasy prefix by adding The World Ends with You music as part of the latest DLC batch. "Twister," the 2007 JRPG's theme song , and "Calling" are two of six new tracks available now in the 3DS rhythm game. As per the Shibuya-infused DS game, Twister is a Battle Music Sequence in Curtain Call while background tune Calling is a Field Music Sequence. The three other new BMS tunes are "Liberi Fatali" from Final Fantasy 8, "Final Confrontation" from Romancing SaGa 3, and "World Revolution" from Chrono Trigger. The sixth song and second FMS is "Wind Scene," also from Chrono Trigger. All six DLC songs are priced 99 cents (£0.89/€0.99). To remind yourself of TWEWY's J-pop music - your humble author would argue it's one of the best soundtracks you'll find on the DS - do the Twister again below the break. By the way, don't think the Curtain Call DLC train is stopping just yet. According to Square Enix, the game's next dollop of add-ons is planned to arrive on February 19.

Nearly two years after launching on iOS, the mobile version of The World Ends With You is available now for Android devices - and that's lovely. Meanwhile, a Joystiq editor ponders an alternative reality in which Square Enix releases the had-to-be-titled sequel The World Ends With Wii U. Sigh. If you missed TWEWY the first time around, let's recap: The original DS RPG hit Japan back in 2007 before heading West a year later. It's set in Tokyo's Shibuya district, where malls, cafes and clubs are infused with a distinct youth culture that's similarly all over the game.

  • Daily iPad App: The World Ends With You Solo Remix for iPad brings a modern classic to iOS

The World Ends With You is one of the best role-playing games of the last five years. It was originally released by Square Enix on the Nintendo DS, and it not only made great use of an original setting (it's based in the highways and byways of a mystical version of Tokyo's biggest shopping district), but also featured some very innovative touchscreen combat controls. Now, almost five years after its initial release, Square Enix has brought the title over to Apple's iOS platform, and the game fits very well on Apple's larger screen. If there's one complaint I have about The World Ends With You, it's that the game is somewhat slow -- the story crawls along a bit too close to a snail's pace for my taste. Also, the characters, to my mind, aren't especially likeable. But that doesn't mean the game isn't great -- the combat especially is really well-designed, and the iPad's bigger screen space (along with the game's updated graphics) makes using pins and swiping across the screen to attack a lot of fun. There are a number of gameplay systems too, from upgrading pins and dressing in certain brands to making sure your characters are syncing up well together. The game is complicated, but it's all smoothly explained (even if I think it could have opened up a little bit faster). At any rate, especially if you've never played this one before and are ready to dive into a huge modern Japanese RPG, The World Ends With You Solo Remix is a great update of what's sure to be a classic game, and is even worth the $19.99 price (it's two dollars cheaper on the iPhone, but I think this is a much better experience on the iPad). Square Enix does post sales on apps occasionally, but if you want to play through this one, now's the time to grab it, and if you stick with it, odds are you won't be disappointed.

This is a column by Kat Bailey dedicated to the analysis of the once beloved Japanese RPG sub-genre. Tune in every Wednesday for thoughts on white-haired villains, giant robots, Infinity+1 swords, and everything else the wonderful world of JRPGs has to offer. Well, that was a little anti-climactic, wasn't it? For a second there, I really thought that we were going to get an actual sequel to The World Ends With You. But no, we're getting a port instead – an iOS port at that.As always, the backlash was predictable, and Square Enix didn't help themselves with their countdown or the price point ($20 or $18 depending on iOS device – yikes). But I'm sure Square Enix had its reasons; those reasons being: It's a relatively easy way for Square Enix to continue gauging popular interest in the series. The World Ends With You was originally designed with touchscreen support in mind, which translates nicely to mobile devices (the lack of a second screen for Neku's partner is another matter). It will probably turn a profit. I hear businesses like money.Basically, it's a way for Square Enix to exhume the series after shoveling dirt on it and moving on four years ago. This isn't Square Enix dashing hopes of a sequel; it's Square Enix raising those hopes up a notch. At a guess, it's hoping to raise The World Ends With You's profile with mainstream gamers in such a way that the sequel will be a bona fide success, and not just a cult hit. Right now, there's no better way to reach the masses than to put something out on iOS, which might answer why the game hasn't found life on the Vita.

Square Enix's The World Ends With You countdown has ended with an official announcement of an iOS port. And yes, it's expensive: $18 on iPhone or $20 on iPad.The World Ends With You Solo Remix takes the one-character-per-screen gameplay of the DS game and changes it up for iOS, putting both Neku and his partner on the same screen, with redrawn HD artwork and additional music. You'll be able to see the refreshed Shibuya setting as early as tomorrow: Square Enix lists the release date as August 27 – and that's for the English version.

The countdown linked to The World Ends with You is for an iOS port of the DS game, a leak on the Square Enix's Japanese eShop has apparently revealed. A listing for an upcoming soundtrack of the game disclosed that an iOS version would be released later this year. It also mentioned that the port will feature new music, including arranged tracks from Kingdom Hearts 3D.Square Enix quickly deleted the incriminating info, but Siliconera has the screencaps for evermore. Hopes of that elusive sequel appear dashed once more, but we hope we're proven wrong.

Square Enix has posted a new countdown site at the URL "http://www.square-enix.co.jp/subaseka/" which, for many reasons, suggests some kind of new The World Ends With You content. For one thing, the "subaseka" URL is a shortened version of the DS RPG's Japanese name Subarashiki Kono Sekai. The font of the countdown is familiar, and the music that the site plays is from the World Ends With You soundtrack. The background of the site appears to be the silhouette of the game's Shibuya setting. In fact, reader Amelia set her computer's clock ahead one day at a time, causing the site to play a more complete snippet of music each day, and the Shibuya background to become clearer. It's pretty clear that whatever this countdown is, it has something to do with The World Ends With You. Of course, we don't want to jump to the conclusion that it's a sequel yet – it could be a port to a new platform, some kind of mobile spinoff, or even an anime or manga. Let's keep our expectations in check by remembering the last time we saw these characters, it was in a Kingdom Hearts game.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

In about a week, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance will feature characters from The World Ends With You – one of my favorite RPGs of the past several years. In some circles, it's considered to be the prelude to a sequel, and a follow-up has been hinted at.I feel like I should be happier at that prospect than I am. Actually, I was pretty happy to get more The World Ends With You for a while, even if it came in the form of Kingdom Hearts. Now though, I'm feeling a little more ambivalent. Some of my reticence stems from the fact that The World Ends With You didn't exactly end on a cliffhanger. It is very much a complete, self-contained story, with very little in the way of loose ends. Even the nature of the Director – the all-powerful being that runs the game at the heart of the story – and the fate of Shibuya is pretty much explained. Short of a prequel, or a whole new cast of characters in Kansai or something, there aren't a lot of places that a new The World Ends With You can go.

The World Ends With You is, besides being an excellent name for a My Chemical Romance song, one of the few non-Final Fantasy RPGs from Square Enix to obtain cult classic status. The last we heard of a potential sequel to the teenager-infused romp through Shibuya was in August of 2010, when series artist Tetsuya Nomura said "I definitely want to make a sequel."Fast-forward about a year, and The World Ends With You protagonist Neku is spotted as one of the many cameos during Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance's Tokyo Game Show demo. Now, Nomura has said that TWEWY supporting character Raimu, who never spoke during the original game, will also be in Kingdom Hearts 3D and will be fully voice acted "out of consideration of the future of The World Ends With You series," according to an interview translated by Andriasang. If that weren't powerfully tantalizing on its own, Nomura also said that "there probably is something" coming in the series' future, though he couldn't speak in specifics at the time. He also laughed mid-sentence, according to the translation, although there's no context provided to indicate whether the laugh was the playful chuckle of an appreciative artist, or the maniacal cackling of a man manipulating the hearts of thousands. Without this vital context clue, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

  • The World Ends With You cameo in Kingdom Hearts 3D notice of 'something' new

Kingdom Hearts producer (and theoretical Final Fantasy Versus XIII lead) Tetsuya Nomura told Famitsu that the appearance of The World Ends With You's Neku Sakuraba in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance portended other things for the character in the future. According to Andriasang, Famitsu asked Nomura if Neku's appearance provided notice of a sequel to the Shibuya-based DS RPG. Nomura didn't quite confirm a sequel, but he did say that the appearance suggested "something" that Square Enix is working on. Last year, Nomura said he wanted to make a sequel to TWEWY "when the time is right." Perhaps the time will be even closer to right two minutes from now, when you've watched the new trailer above (featuring Neku).

While Kingdom Hearts is usually the domain of Final Fantasy and Disney characters, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance features a small crossover with The World Ends with You. Specifically, The World Ends with You protagonist Neku made a brief appearance during the TGS demo. It's likely just some simple fan service, and doesn't necessarily mean we're getting the sequel that we've always wanted -- and that designer Tetsuya Nomura "definitely" wants to make -- but it's nice to dream, isn't it?

It seems all of our training exercises to develop our latent mind control abilities are starting to pay off. After months of attempting to bend the will of Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura to try and get him to create a follow-up to 2008's surprisingly lovable handheld RPG The World Ends With You, the designer recently told Nintendo Power (transcribed by Siliconera) that "I definitely want to make a sequel." See that, Nomura? We're in your mind. Of course, games at Square Enix are developed in a set order, and Nomura explained he's "very busy working on other titles right now, but when the time is right, I would love to make another installment of The World Ends with You." Now we just have to use our psychic powers to convince Nomura to go ahead and skip all those other games. Then we're going to make him do a funny little dance. Because we can.

Square Enix has been all over the DS, with remakes, franchise continuations, spin-offs, and more. Perhaps even more amazingly, however, is that the DS isn't just getting the same ol' series, but new games, too. Some are totally new, while others are newish, yet have connection to some of the company's other properties. If you're a fan of their work, you've probably played a lot of DS in the past few years. But what's been more exciting to you: the newer things, like The World Ends With You and the recently-announced Blood of Bahamut, or the oldest of the old, like the remakes (Final Fantasy IV, Chrono Trigger, more)?
