Amazon is making its Thursday Night Football (TNF) coverage much more informative and satisfying for avid football fans. Watchers will now be able to use its X-Ray technology to display what it calls Next Gen Stats -- overlaid on the game currently on screen -- previously only available to coaches and announcers. Prime Video subscribers are already using X-Ray to learn about who and what they're watching while they're watching, such as a show's cast and interesting trivia about it. For Thursday Night Football, the technology can be used to show viewers a running back's average yards after contact, for instance, or a quarterback's average time to throw.

Fox is expanding its 4K offerings. After it streamed every Women's World Cup game in 4K, it's now doing the same for the NFL's Thursday Night Football -- the new season of which kicks off on September 26th. The game is being captured in 1080p and HDR, then upconverted, so streaming viewers will get the benefit of resolution beyond Fox's usual 720p broadcast plus the improved colors and contrast, if not all of the pixels you'd expect in a true 4K feed.

  • ESPN coming to Xbox One, NFL.com fantasy football on Xbox 360 now

ESPN on Xbox Live was Microsoft's first network partner on the Xbox 360 back in 2010 and the network has signed a new deal to stream content on the Xbox One. ESPN.com clips, ESPN 3 live content and everything streamed through WatchESPN, which requires a cable-authenticated package, are all presented in the app. "Sports fans know what they like. We're just trying to give them better ways to access that content in a more quickly and more user-friendly format," David Jurenka, Director of Sports at Xbox Entertainment Studios, says. Within the app, users can create a specific channel for their favorite team, and the app will even pull in their personalized data from ESPN's ScoreCenter app. In addition to ESPN, Microsoft's new partnership with the NFL has spurned development of an NFL app for Xbox One – with NFL Network content, including Thursday Night Football and NFL Red Zone – and a fantasy football app for Xbox 360. The latter app, which allows players to log into their NFL.com fantasy teams and do just about everything they could on a computer or smartphone, should be available today. Users can adjust their lineups and watch NFL.com highlights through their Xbox 360 console. The NFL app is also coming to Xbox One in November.

Just in time to arrive alongside some real referees, the NFL Network has expanded the companion app experience for its Thursday night game to include Android users. Now active as the Browns take on the Ravens in a game where a defender catching the ball in the end zone with both hands is likely to be ruled an interception and not a touchdown, Thursday Night Football Xtra promises fans additional interaction with polls, games, stats. There's also live video reports from Simon Wilcots on the sideline, as well as some conveniently placed ads as seen in the screenshot above. We checked it out early on and the content available was mirrored across devices and platforms, although it was oddly stuck in portrait mode on our Nexus 7. The feature debuted on iOS last week, and is now available on Android phones and tablets as a separate app from the standard NFL '12. Hit the source link below to download it (Verizon subscribers have their own version) as we wait to see if Brandon Weeden can learn to play quarterback before he turns 30.
