As a huge light gun fan, I was enthralled to find out that Namco Bandai was bringing Time Crisis 4 to the PS3. Recreating an arcade experience at home has always met with a few stumbling blocks, but it appears that the new Guncon 3 might be the best home light gun yet.We would love to try and set up the Guncon ourselves, but the kiosk at E3 certainly proved that, under the right conditions, the Guncon works. There are two sensors that must be placed at the top left and right of the television screen, essentially mimicking the technology found in the Wii sensor bar.Shooting without an on-screen cursor was easy, and it wasn't too long before we were shooting enemies, switching weapons, and dodging enemy fire rather easily. The weapon select feature is fantastic: being able to switch between a pistol, to a shotgun, to a rifle for the various encounters adds an appreciable amount of strategy to the game.Time Crisis 4 is looking to be a rather complete offering for PS3 owners, especially with the inventive FPS mode the game is promising. Although we're not fond of the generic art style, and the rather dull graphics, the Guncon 3 opens a world of possibilities for future light gun games on the PS3.%Gallery-4206%

A fistful of new images have just been released from Time Crisis 4, Namco's arcade rail-shooter making its way to the PS3 later this year (hopefully). Time Crisis will be a faithful port of the arcade game with an added mission mode starring Captain William Rush as the main character. Namco's more accurate Guncon 3 will be used in the new Time Crisis game as well, and a few images of the upgraded light gun have also been released.%Gallery-4206%

  • Time Crisis 4: FPS shooting for a new generation

One game easily stole the show at Namco Bandai's Editor's Day: Time Crisis 4. This PS3 exclusive title will feature support for the Wii-inspired Guncom 3. Having recently played the original arcade version, we can confidently say that the PS3 version will be superior in every single way. If you haven't taken a closer look yet, you should. This will easily become one of PS3's killer-apps amongst hardcore gamers. The new Guncom takes advantage of Wii-esque technology, which allows it to be compatible with SDTVs and HDTVs of all kinds (previous Time Crisis console titles did not work with certain types of TVs). The new HD graphics are stunning: a vast improvement over the pixelated mess of the arcade original. The single most exciting feature of the PS3 Time Crisis has to be its new FPS mode, which allows you to freely move around the world whilst using Guncom 3 to fire at enemies. By adding the precision controls of a light gun game into the FPS genre is certainly going to create a truly immersive experience. If Namco Bandai can nail down the controls on the game before its November release, we can't help but think that this game could potentially set the standard for FPS game control.View the trailer after the cut, or download the trailer directly to your PS3 by visiting our website on your console.%Gallery-4065%

  • PS3 Guncon relies on Wii-like pointer

With traditional light guns firing nothing but unhelpful blanks at our fancy LCD and plasma televisions, there was some question as to how the PlayStation 3's Guncon would function with the upcoming Time Crisis 4. An article on Japanese site Game Watch (which now appears to have been removed) provided the details, since documented and translated by Game|Life's Chris Kohler.Much like the Wiimote (as used by Sega's light gun game, Ghost Squad), the Guncon 3 relies on two markers placed on either side of the television. A sensor inside the gun's muzzle detects the markers and automagically figures out where it's being pointed. The controller also features six buttons and a second analog stick placed on an awkward "subgrip" that you're meant to hold with your left hand. The original article points out that while Japan gets a black gun, America and Europe will have to make do with a charming orange model, as seen above (in the company of the world's mangiest jacket)..

  • Time Crisis 4 exclusive to PS3 - Will use Guncon 3

The latest issue of Famitsu holds some fairly interesting tidbits. It seems that Time Crisis 4 is going to have a direct port from the arcade machines exclusively onto the PlayStation 3 at some point in the future. As well as the arcade mode, the game will also feature a new mission mode, though there are no details regarding what that will involve, as of yet.The most exciting news to come from this is that the Guncon 3 controller will be released, presumably, alongside the game. The newest iteration of the Guncon peripheral will use Infra-red emitters, rather the first two which relied on cathode-ray timing to detect where the gun was being pointed. As a result, the Guncon 3 will work perfectly with LCD TVs whereas the previous two did not. A downside to the new controller, however, seems to be that, judging from the attached image, it will be wired. Whether this is the case for the final product or to allow for backwards compatibility with the PS2 is unclear.

In addition to revealing Tekken 5's online upgrade, the latest Weekly Famitsu (via NeoGAF) also unveiled Time Crisis 4 for PlayStation 3. The game will feature AC mode that the NeoGAF post suggests will be a "100% port" of the arcade game. Also revealed is Guncon 3, a new light gun for the game. (Previous Guncons were released one for each PlayStation console.) There will also be a mission mode where Captain William Rush will be the main character. The game is due out 2007 in Japan. The US versions for the two previous Time Crisis games have come out within six weeks of the Japanese release.[Via CVG]

  • EB Games wants to sell you PS3 Time Crisis with gun

EB Games lists a PS3 version of arcade game Time Crisis 4 that might be released late this year. Sure, a "no image available" page with little other information doesn't usually interest us, but this might-be $89.99 game might include "Guncon," which might be a PS3 version of the light gun. Maybe. Is this another Namco Bandai exclusive? The GunCon and GunCon 2 connected with a wire to previous PlayStations, but we can only imagine that a PS3 version would work wirelessly over Bluetooth. (Seriously, our imaginations are that good.) And as long as we're imagining, why not include some Sixaxis controls to look or move?Namco Bandai hasn't officially announced a PS3 version of the game and told us the company chooses not to comment on the EB Games listing.

  • Time Crisis 3 tops Amazon's gaming list, outsells Brain Age & New Mario

How does a game released October 21, 2003 top Amazon's current best selling video games list? Good question. During the July 4 holiday weekend, Amazon dropped the price of Time Crisis 3 (with dual GunCon2s) to $19.99, sparking a surprising sales surge that shot the aging PS2 light gun title to the #1 position on Amazon's "Top Sellers in Computer & Video Games" list. While the industry is notorious for remaining dormant during the summer months, the Time Crisis 3 sale managed to outsell the red hot DS Lite and its most popular software titles, Brain Age & New Super Mario Bros. Time Crisis 3 is currently sold out on Amazon, but remains the bestseller as of this afternoon.
