Good news, U-verse fans, you'll be upgrading from the current 2 HD / 2 SD video stream system to three live HD streams in 2009. The (potentially) bad news is that comes with the price of additional compression, as AT&T's IPTV service squeezes its MPEG-4 video streams down to 5 Mbps from a current size of 6-8 Mbps, according to CTO John Donovan. Count another bonus as the Total Home DVR will throw as many as seven video streams around the house, up from the current five. With a last mile DSL strategy that gives it less breathing room than Verizon's FiOS, there's only one way to add more streams, but is there going to be a PQ price to pay? We'll find out soon, and don't expect AT&T to stop there, Multichannel News quotes Donovan saying encoders currently in development could reduce bandwidth even further.

Considering that St. Louis, Missouri was one of the first locales to receive 2 HD / 2 SD from AT&T, we suppose it's no real shock to hear that some residents of that city are already sucking down the update. Announced earlier this month for the Bay Area, AT&T is apparently rolling its Total Home DVR software out to at least two more major metros: St. Louis and Dallas / Fort Worth. The carrier told us that the rest of its markets would get blessed soon, but we'll admit, we didn't figure "soon" to mean "next week." Any others out there getting notification of the update on their set-top-box?[Thanks, Anthony]Read - Total Home DVR to St. LouisRead - Total Home DVR to Dallas / Fort Worth

No surprises here, but AT&T is doing the right thing by getting official with its Total Home DVR -- which we've been expecting for like, ever. A number of loyal U-verse users received word of the change last week, but now the provider is rolling the software out to the Bay Area at no additional charge; as for everyone else, expect to receive it before 2009 dawns. So, what's so fresh about Total Home? Oh, just the ability to watch five HD programs simultaneously throughout the home, among other nice extras listed in bulleted fashion after the jump.

  • AT&T surprises U-verse subscribers with Total Home DVR & HD VOD trial

AT&T surprised a few customers over the last few days adding high definition video on demand selections, a new weather on demand widget, and pushing a DVR upgrade their way including the new Total Home DVR software. Post-upgrade, punching the recorded TV button on any U-verse connected TV enables HD playback from any of the set-top boxes in the house. that means subscribers can also record up to four shows at once or pause in one room and continue in another. A full rollout is clearly due sooner rather than later, and initial impressions in our tips box are positive, if you've got it drop a line and tell us if the new features are everything we've ever dreamed of. Full copy of the introductory e-mail follows after the break.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Take this one with a hearty helping of salt for now, but we've received a bit of information that hints strongly at AT&T revealing a whole home DVR (possibly dubbed Total Home DVR) in the very near future. Unfortunately, details about the unit itself are still few and far between -- we've no idea who will be manufacturing it, and we can't confirm / deny whether it'll revolutionize your life (or the way you see U-verse TV). Still, we've reason to believe that the provider will be coughing up the official verbiage soon enough, so keep an eye out.[Thanks, Anonymous]
