Guild Wars 2 promotes its World Tournament Series Championships, goes on sale
Earlier this morning, ArenaNet delivered its 2014 Guild Wars 2 World Tournament Series Championships roadmap from London's Eurogamer Expo, where the studio is livestreaming its latest e-sports endeavor. ANet is calling the tourney the game's "first truly international competition" as it pulls players from three continents; opening rounds of qualifiers have already concluded. The studio explains, "Each event will pit four teams in a fight to become the world's best Guild Wars 2 PvP players, with the top two teams from the host region facing off against two visiting teams. The debut event is scheduled for December 4-5 in Beijing, where players will vie for a $50,000 (USD) prize pool and the title of first-ever Guild Wars 2 WTS Champion." As promised Tuesday, the buy-to-play MMO's free trial also began this morning at 3 a.m. EDT; it's active for a week until the wee hours of October 2nd. Box prices (specifically, Digital Heroic Editions and Digital Deluxe Editions through the GW2 storefront) have also been halved throughout the promotion. [Source: Anet press release]
Guild Wars 2 to host its first player tourney at Gamescom
Top Guild Wars 2 players will have the opportunity to duke it out in the game's first International All-Stars Tournament during Gamescom 2014, which runs from August 13th through the 17th. ArenaNet will fly players from Europe, China, and North America to the convention in order to compete against one another. Even if you aren't participating in the tourney itself, you'll be able to visit the Twitch.TV booth to play some GW2, chat with the developers, and partake in other activities. 32-team TERA PvP tourney starts Saturday, March 9
TERA fans, you've now got some weekend plans -- assuming you didn't already have weekend plans, of course. En Masse is hosting a three-vs.-three PvP tournament in Champions' Skyring starting on Saturday, March 9th. This will be a single-elimination event composed of 32 teams, with 3,000 En Masse cash shop points going to the winners alongside a premium ninja costume bundle. The second place team gets the costume bundle and a thousand EMP, while third and fourth place finishers will take home the costumes. All participants will receive an afro head slot accessory. If you're not much for PvPing, you can view the shenanigans via En Masse's Twitch channel. The event runs from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday. EVE Online's New Eden Open tournament starts tomorrow
EVE Online is a game all about competition, frequently with everyone else who happens to be within range of your weapons. As a result, it seems like an oversight that the game hasn't already gotten in on the prestigious field of competitive online gaming. That changes starting tomorrow with the first New Eden Open, a tournament of players competing for a grand total of $10,000 in prize money, hopefully not being carried on a vulnerable freighter in the form of PLEX. The contest kicks off tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. EST complete with continuous live coverage on the official stream channel. Twenty-seven teams will be taking part in the double-elimination tournament, with the grand prize sitting at $6,000. Matches will be run each weekend until the finals on December 2nd. If you're on one of the competing teams, make sure your ships are up to snuff, and even if you're not in for the prize money, be sure to tune in and cheer for your favorite players.
Firefall beta tournament to debut at gamescom
What do Firefall, 10,000 euros, and Gamescom have in common? Europe's first Firefall beta tournament! Red 5 Studios is partnering with Electronic Sports League (ESL) to bring attendees of gamescom 2012 the opportunity to participate in this tournament and battle it out for a grand prize of 10,000 euros. Registration and the tournament qualifiers will start on Thursday, the 16th of August, at the ESL Arena and continue through the 17th. On Saturday the 18th, the qualifying players will compete for the prize money on the ESL stage in front of spectators. Registration opens for Global Agenda's anniversary tournament
Are you a bad enough dude to take on all comers in a Global Agenda tournament? Do you want to have a totally sweet Tyrannosaurus on your head? The two are entirely linked -- the registration for the game's anniversary 4v4 tournament has just begun, and the prize for the winning team will be a new piece of flair in the style of the aforementioned dinosaur head. It's going to be a rough road to the top, but there's incentive to take part in the tourney even if you don't think you'll quite rock the top spot. Every team member who participates through the Group stage of the tournament will receive a Trike flair, and the top four teams in the event will all receive three Cyber Punk dyes as a consolation prize. Obviously you'll need a team of four people to take part, so now's the perfect time to round up three of your Global Agenda buddies and go for the gold. Or for the hat shaped like a multi-ton killing machine with possible tendencies toward scavenging, which is a bit more exciting than a gold medal anyway.
Hit the slopes in new Mario Kart tournament
With the onset of winter, the latest Mario Kart Wii tournament features a thematically appropriate choice of track: the snowy peaks of DK Summit. From today, you can hop online and complete a single lap of the twisty course in the quickest time possible. On your way, you'll also have to pass through a bunch of deviously placed gates, or your time won't register. The closing date for this is December 25, so you've got another ten days to work on beating the whole world at Mario Kart Wii.* You won't be short of challengers.* Note: Beating the world is not as great as winning Wii Points, primarily because beating the world won't buy you River City Ransom. Latest Mario Kart tournament drops coins all over Maple Treeway
It's that time again, where Nintendo pulls the lever and activates another tournament for Mario Kart Wii. This latest tourney takes place on Maple Treeway, tasking participants with collecting coins scattered throughout the track. Before you can nab the coins, however, they must be liberated from the various piles of leaves that call Maple Treeway their home. WoW TCG hosts World Champs in Paris this weekend
The World of Warcraft Trading Card Game World Championships have started up this weekend in Paris, France -- there's some excellent coverage on the official site about all of the CCG gaming going on over there. They've got everything from a roundup of the swag bag to play-by-play on the featured matches and some good commentary on what kinds of decks players are bringing to the tables. All told, the players are fighting for a prize pool of $250,000 -- some serious cash for playing cards.They're in the middle of Day 2 right now, so there's lots more tournament coverage to come from Paris. If you're a fan of the TCG, this weekend's your chance to check out what some of the top players are up to as they battle for the big prize.
Major League Gaming hosts WoW competition
Major League Gaming, which is apparently the parent company of WoW Insider favorite MMO-Champion, have announced that there will be a new PC gaming circuit, featuring our favorite MMO. The circuit will have events in San Diego, from June 13th–15th; Orlando, July 11th–13th; and Dallas, October 3–5. Each event will have $22,500 in prizes -- it's no Blizzard Arena Tournament, but that's still a lot of money.The circuit will be played on HP Blackbird 002 computers, so I guess you won't have to worry about frame rates (that thing has 1 GB of VRAM). The competition will be 3v3, just like Blizzard's tourney. Only 32 teams will be allowed to register, and you need to have an account set up on MLG's site first; registration opens May 15. They say "more details on rules and the official format will be released on May 15th" -- maybe Blizzard will let them use a special tournament server? At any rate, it looks like Blizzard may have been more successful at turning WoW into an esport than we thought.[Thanks, Jeff]
