Perfect Ten: Why MMOs need to give up their dragon addiction
If a genie ever appeared to grant me three wishes, I would not hesitate. I would not be selfish by asking for more wishes or focus on my own well-being. No, I would think of you all when I said, "Mr. Genie, I want you to eliminate all Elves from MMOs, preferably via boiling acid. I want you to make all online giant spiders obey the cube law. And I want all developers to be stricken with a specific form of amnesia that will make them forget, now and forever, that dragons are a thing." You're welcome in advance, online gamers. Yes, I will gladly take up the mantle of your king and protector. Dragons are not cool. Dragons have never been cool. And yet, for some reason unknown to me, MMO developers lose their collective minds over the fire-breathing lizards. They're not just a trope that infests MMOs to the detriment of original storytelling and world building; they're cheesy villainous centerpieces that devs prop up while deluding themselves that the other couple of thousand MMOs aren't doing the same thing. MMOs need to give up their dragon addiction, and I am not short on reasons why. I am also so dead serious that dragons need to go that I'm contemplating getting a chest tattoo of one just so that I can laser removal it right off the next day.
The Perfect Ten: Franchises that would make great MMOs
Any MMO player worth his or her salt has a binder full of ideas for games, usually based on a favorite book, television, or movie franchise. We've talked about it before. We've discussed whether or not it's a good idea to even have IP-driven MMOs. But you know what we've never done? We've never consulted me. I'm hurt, to be honest. I know that I'm just one of millions of MMO players, but I have a binder too! It's a vintage Trapper Keeper with a wizard on the cover who is dashing among abstract geometric shapes. My mom thought it was cool and my friends think it's totally rad. Inside are the secrets to hit MMOs that studios are just too scared to make but would be bigger than World of Warcraft if someone would just take the chance. I know it. Today I'm going to open up that binder and shove my ideas in your face. And then, knowing how these things go, I will raise up every geek voice against my picks in the comments section. Bring it on. Griffin outs Binder Insert case for the iPad, brings Trapper Keepers to the 21st century for $25

The enclosure secures the iPad 2 or third-generation model in a 3-ring binder for easy camouflage of those in-class Angry Birds habits -- or for switching back and forth between a slate and the blue-lined white stuff. A stylus loop and access to the dock connector, volume controls, headphone jack and camera are also taken into consideration around the case's edge. Trapper Keeper: Menubar Notes
I had previously been looking for a menubar notes program, so I was excited yesterday to discover Trapper Keeper from Limbic Logic. It installs as a menubar item and when you activate it (by clicking or hovering over the menubar icon, or with a global hotkey) it drops a search box. Start typing and if its database contains a note that matches the search text, it will drop down from the interface as above. If it does not match anything, when you press return it will create a new note with that text (which you can continue to edit). It's a little bit confusing in that ESC will cancel (TAB or ENTER saves), but I really like the idea. You can also use Trapper Keeper to launch a Spotlight or Google search by pressing the appropriate keyboard shortcut instead of return. Finally, Trapper Keeper can automatically sync notes with your iPod. All in all, I like the concept and if I were not a committed Quicksilver addict, I think Trapper Keeper might just find a place in my menubar. Trapper Keeper is $18 and a demo is available.
