  • Zeds are out for blood again in Killing Floor 2 for PC

If the first Killing Floor hasn't already proven it, Tripwire Interactive has no shortage of creepy, violent zeds at their disposal. Their surplus has spilled into Killing Floor 2, a second dose of wave-based, teamwork-oriented first-person shooting bound for Windows. PC Gamer revealed the sequel this week in an exclusive feature, chatting with Tripwire President John Gibson about what's different in this round of fire. KF2 shifts from London to Paris and offers a revamped gore system called "MEAT," standing for Massive Evisceration and Trauma. 95 death animations and 19 body points of dismemberment will help players paint a uniquely grim picture with their weaponry, and every splash of blood will remain where it falls throughout a match. While rendering wall-coating gore would normally be taxing, Killing Floor 2 will modify textures in real time, displaying splattered carnage as makeshift murals rather than in-level objects. A revamped progression system will also be present, with players unlocking and having to choose between two new skills for every five levels earned. Four difficulty settings will be offered, but ramping up the challenge will grant zeds new abilities and amplify their aggression, rather than simply making them faster, denser bullet sponges like the first game. Modders will also be catered to, with Tripwire planning to support Steam Workshop and to release a mod SDK. A release window for KF2 hasn't been offered, but Gibson told PC Gamer that it may reach Early Access for PC and SteamOS earlier than he expects. [Image: Tripwire Interactive]

Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 finally invades Mac today, over seven years after it stormed Windows and Linux. Tripwire Interactive's tactical first-person shooter was developed from Red Orchestra: Combined Arms, which itself is a conversion mod of Unreal Tournament 2004. Meanwhile, sitting next to the Mac attack is a tempting deal for the game's follow-up.Not only is 2011's Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad free on Steam this weekend, but permanent capture of the game will endure 85 percent less wallet-based casualties than normal, with the game down from $19.99 to just $2.99. The 85 percent deal also applies across the Red Orchestra franchise deal, which includes Ostfront 41-45, RO2 and its deluxe upgrade. However, since RO2 isn't out for Mac yet, it only applies to Windows users - give it another five or so years, Mac.

How does one celebrate a milestone nowadays? It's been a while since we've had time to celebrate anything, constantly minding our posts in the trenches of hard-nosed games journalism and all. Do you eat a nice meal? Partake in a round of putt-putt?For Tripwire Interactive, the only way to celebrate is by slashing prices. The studio's co-op survival horror game, Killing Floor, is on sale for $2.99 as a result of recently selling its one millionth copy. Over the last few years, Killing Floor players have racked up 45 million hours of playtime and killed over 500 million enemies. Man, that floor must be getting stickier than a neglected cinema aisle. You have until Thursday to take advantage of the sale.

  • Red Orchestra 2 wants to patch your game, erase your stats

    by

Tonight, Red Orchestra 2 will be performing a selection of its classic hits, including, "Bugs and Glitches," "Tripwire on Fire" and its most recent single, "This Patch will Erase All of your Player Stats." All of these songs are inspired by a true story -- Friday's Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad patch fixes many of the game's glitches, including ones that gave players unearned stat raises and achievements, but it will also reset all players' stats to zero. This amounts to roughly three weeks of glitch-enabled stat gathering for many players, but Tripwire said it's the only way to maintain the integrity of the entire stat system. To compensate these players, Tripwire is handing out an "In B4 Reset" achievement and plans to award those who have it in the future. The next few weeks will also see double experience points for all players. This is unfortunate, but not game-ending -- we would suggest against whining about it, because Red Orchestra's tiny violin is just a pet name for this.

  • Red Orchestra 2 delayed for a little extra tuning

Tripwire Interactive has announced a delay for its upcoming World War 2-themed first person shooter sequel Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad. The game, which is a sequel to a title that was originally based on an Unreal Tournament mod, was set to come out at the end of this month, but will instead arrive on September 13. Tripwire says it's using the extra two weeks to "get it right and add the extra polish the game (and the players) deserve." We're not sure exactly what needs to be tuned up or what notes they want to hit, but we'd imagine the situation at Tripwire HQ lately must sound a little something like this.

Tripwire Interactive has announced that the retail version of Zeno Clash is now available. The press release notes that the game is available at Best Buy, and a quick search reveals the game is available from several other sources, including Newegg and Amazon. The retail version includes Steam Achievements, the full single-player campaign, survival mode and free extra content known as "The Pit." For those unfamiliar with the game, it's a first-person adventure in which you beat up lots of weird-looking dudes in a bizarre fantasy world. If that doesn't help, we've handily embedded a trailer for the upcoming XBLA version after the break. Zeno Clash has landed some decent reviews since it launched, so those of you who held out on the downloadable release might consider picking up the $20 retail package.

  • Tripwire Interactive president defends Steam

Randy Pitchford may feel that Steam represents a conflict of interest for Valve, but not every developer is as distrustful. John Gibson, president of Red Orchestra and Killing Floor developer Tripwire Interactive, wrote an editorial on Gamasutra to express just how taken advantage of he doesn't feel."So, is Valve exploiting independent developers?" Gibson wrote. "In short: absolutely not. Without pulling any punches, I can say with certainty that if it weren't for Steam, there would be no Tripwire Interactive right now." He praised Valve's contract, calling it "the first one we had seen that didn't have any land mines in it."More importantly, Gibson also praised just how paid he has gotten from Steam. "Ask the Tripwire Interactive employees if they feel exploited," he said, "as they move into their new offices paid for by the money the company has made on Steam. Or me, as I drive away from the company that was built from the royalties we made on Steam, in my sports car paid for by the royalties we make on Steam, to the home that I pay for with the royalties we make on Steam" -- where he has the option to eat vegetables bought with royalties made on Steam, and then steamed.Gibson admits that the situation does represent a potential conflict of interest for Valve, but, "What really matters is how they have handled this conflict of interest. In our experience Valve has handled it very well; other companies, not so well."

We're glad that we're not the only ones who played the profoundly odd Zeno Clash and realized it needed to be experienced by as many people as possible. First, we learned it was headed to XBLA, and now Tripwire Interactive has announced it will bring the PC version of the first-person shooter/puncher to retail shelves in the USA and Canada. No time frame has been given other than "soon" but, judging from that, it sounds like you'll find it in stores before you see it on the Marketplace next March. [Via Big Download]

  • Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad announced

We're as tired as anyone of our seemingly never-ending tour of duty in the Great War, Part Deux. Still, given the unconventional road Red Orchestra has traveled we're just a teensy bit curious what developer Tripwire Interactive has tucked inside its pit helmet. The Georgia-based studio has officially made known Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad, the sequel to 2006's Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, itself based on the company's celebrated Unreal Tournament 2004 mod, Red Orchestra: Combined Arms. And, breathe.Heroes of Stalingrad will again find players seeking shelter in gun-pits as bullets fly between German and Soviet forces, this time during the historic and bloody Battle of Stalingrad. Setting expectations, Tripwire promises "gritty, vicious combat" and "unrivaled accuracy and attention to detail." While there will of course be multiplayer, the dev also notes players will lace up in the boots of a German soldier as part of a solo campaign told from the Axis point-of-view, something Tripwire claims as a "first" for the FPS genre. No release date has been announced, though armchair soldiers can find out more in the pages of May's PC Gamer.

Valve and Tripwire Interactive have announced that Killing Floor is now available for pre-order on Steam. Those who pre-order the title before its May 14 release will receive a 25% discount, knocking the price down to a cool $15.00. In addition to the pre-order announcement, a new trailer has been released showcasing the titles zombie-killing action. The game looks to combine some of our favorite shooter features, including six-player co-op and a persistent perk system. Oh, and zombies. Can't forget the zombies.

  • Killing Floor mod gets standalone Steam release

    03.22.2009

The popular UT 2004 mod, Killing Floor will get an upgraded, standalone release on Steam, courtesy of Tripwire Interactive. According to Voodoo Extreme, Tripwire was approached by the mod's original designer to create a port of the survival-horror shooter that would run on Red Orchestra. Tripwire decided Killing Floor could do better and offered to purchase the rights to the game and help the original team bring an upgraded version to Steam in standalone form. Like Left 4 Dead, Killing Floor -- which originally released in 2005 -- features enemy hordes making violent rushes to halt player advancement. The game will feature six-player co-op play, nine different monster types (varying from physical predators to weapon wielding foes) and a stockpile of different weapons for players to use. Killing Floor also includes a persistent perk system allowing players to set themselves apart from other survivors with skill and ability upgrades -- something we think L4D's Louis would have loved to have, to help fight off his most traumatic attack. No release date has been announced. [Via BigDownload]
