  • Alien Crush remake heading to North American WiiWare

Nintendo's WiiWare service has apparently sparked a renewed interest in developing games with one pixelated foot rooted in the past. Following both Capcom and Konami's head start, Hudson has likewise decided to dip into its archives, returning with news to bring the Wii-make of its TurboGrafx-16 sci-fi pinball game, Alien Crush, to North America. Descriptively titled Alien Crush Returns, the download was released today in Japan and is based on the 1988 classic, which itself is available on WiiWare's sister service. While a date for the game's North American debut has not yet been announced, Hudson notes the follow-up will again be played across two screens and an unspecified number of boards, each no doubt filled with galactic baddies with a lust for silver balls. Most interesting, however, is news that Alien Crush Returns will support two-player online play as well as include online leader boards, with Hudson promising multiple online tournaments for the pinball-obsessed to throw down with their E.T. crushing skills. %Gallery-30489%

  • TurboGrafx-16 comes to iPhone (unofficially)

Attention "jailbroken" iPhone owners: Touch Arcade reports that it's now perfectly okay to Bonk your wunderphone without having to worry about its purty glass screen cracking. Emulator author ZodTTD (shall we kneel before him?) has ported the nifty TurboGrafx-16 emu, Temper, to iPhone as – wait for it – temper4iphone.Temper was originally developed for the South Korean GamePark 2X handheld and ran ROM- and CD-Based titles designed for NEC's 16-bit system, which was a smash in Japan (as the PC-Engine) but enjoyed modest success in the West under its Turbo-fied moniker. As you can see from the embedded video, the emu is already plenty impressive. Unlike its GP2X counterpart, there's no support (yet) for CD-based game images, but compatibility with TG-16 ROMs (if you don't own the game, don't download em, 'kay?) is said to be high. Like previous emulators ported to iPhone, the retro console's controls are recreated on the touch screen. Apple is expected to launch its "2.0" refresh of the iPhone along with the iPhone App Store in just a couple of weeks, and we'd be jazzed to see a proper Virtual Console-esque suite of "sanctioned" emulators offered for download via the service.[Via TUAW]

  • temper4iPhone emulates Turbografx-16 on the iPhone

The guys at Touch Arcade are at it again -- this time, ZodTTD has ported temper, a TurboGrafx-16 emulator, to the iPhone, and as you can see above, this means something amazing: Bonk on the touchscreen. Sounds like the audio has a few little glitches, but seems like the controls and graphics are working as well as could be asked -- even in the slower Landscape mode (with the controls overlaid on the graphics), he says it was pulling about 50FPS.There's even an emulator for the TurboGrafx-16 CD PC Engine, as long as you do a little tweaking (and nab the bios from somewhere that may or may not be legal -- same for the ROMs). temper4iPhone is still in beta, and just like all of these other emulators and jailbreak apps, we have no clue at all whether we'll ever get the chance to see them on the (rapidly approaching) App Store. Still, it's awesome to see -- we've definitely come a long way from the NES emulator way back when.[Via MacBytes.com]

It's Monday, which means that the Virtual Console provides us with downloadable entertainment. It's been awhile since we've gotten a N64 game, so color us excited about that. As for the other title up for for grabs, well ... we don't really have any experience with that one. So, we're looking forward to trying that out. This week's Virtual Console releases include: Kirby64: The Crystal Shards (Nintendo 64, 1 - 4 players, 1,000 Wii Points) Psychosis (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points) And, unlike last week, you can definitely expect a VC Monday Madness video wrap-up later on today.

Today's Virtual Console offerins are in stark contrast of one another. On the one hand, you have a calm, some would say somber, title like Harvest Moon, where you'll settle for nothing less than having the best farm ever. On the other hand, there's Lords of Thunder, which tasks the player with shooting the crap out of everything on screen. This week's Virtual Console releases are: Harvest Moon (SNES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Lords of Thunder (TurboGrafx16 CD-ROM, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Be sure to stop back later for our video wrap-up of this week's Virtual Console games.

The other title is one we're familiar with and enjoy. So, it looks like today is going to be a good day for the Virtual Console. This week's Virtual Console releases are: RiotZone (1 player, TurboGrafx16, 800 Wii Points) Pac-Attack (1 - 2 players, SNES, 800 Wii Points) Be sure to stop back later for video wrap-up.

Sorry, it took us longer than we wanted to get this up and out onto the net. Video complications meant I had to film my escapades on the Virtual Console twice. Have no fear, though. I still managed to get the thing done today and play the releases for you. Late is better than never, right? Right?

Another Monday, another slew of new games to download on the Virtual Console. For most of you, the big title this week involves combat and bloodshed, as the Mortal Kombat wannabe Eternal Champions becomes available. The other two titles up for grabs aren't ones we have any personal experience with, to tell the truth. Eternal Champions (Sega Genesis, 1 - 2 players, 800 Wii Points) ZANAC (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) The Dynastic Hero (TurboGrafx 16 CD-ROM, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Be sure to stop back later for our video wrap-up, as usual.

Note: I made the same mistake while recording the video tonight, commenting that Super Air Zonk was the first TG16 CD game in North America. Sorry for the blatant error on my part. With the Wii turning 1 today, we'd hope for some kickass titles on the Virtual Console to celebrate its launch. Sadly, that isn't the case, as the releases today aren't all that great. Still, we soldier on and play the crappy games so you don't have to! Hit up the video above, then check out the rest of the coverage past the break.

Update: Sorry, folks. I overlooked that Gates of Thunder was the first TG16 CD game to release, not Super Air Zonk. Silly me, I also made a huge mental error in stating Working Crew was releasing. This week's Virtual Console update shows the release of the first a new TurboGrafx16 CD-ROM game in the United States. Rejoice! Along with that game, come two more, so we get our usual triple dose of downloadables. Those with a keen eye will know a similar game released some time ago.Virtual Console releases for November 19th are: Wrecking Crew (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points) Sonic 3D Blast (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Super Air Zonk (TurboGrafx16 CD-ROM, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) As usual, keep an eye on Wii Fanboy as we'll be bringing you our video wrap-up later on today.
