Comet closing last UK stores for good tomorrow
UK electronics retailer Comet has been circling the drain since going into administration in early November, and with no savior in sight, it's officially shutting up shop tomorrow. While the majority of stores have already served their final customers, the last remaining outposts will cease trading on December 18th. Comet's brand and website could live on in one form or another, should a buyer for these assets be found, but unfortunately, that won't help roughly six and a half thousand staff now out of a job. So, if you're looking for a potential fire sale bargain, or just want one last emotional wander through the aisles, your window of opportunity is quickly running out.
GAME sells Steam vouchers in its UK stores, sees no dramatic tension in that whatsoever
GAME is certainly up for trying new things after getting a second chance at life, and today it becomes the first store in the UK to offer Steam Wallet Codes for purchase. You can buy £5, £10, £20 or £50's worth, and until December 7th, you can get a 33 percent bump in trade-in value, should you put the credit towards codes. Customers can also browse the entire Steam catalog on tablets dotted around the shop floor. While the vouchers will obviously make good gifts this holiday, and also appeal to those who don't want Steam knowing their card details, we're not sure how smart a move this is. We imagine there are still a few keyboard-and-mouse gamers out there who don't use Steam, but once GAME shows them the light, will they ever set foot in a physical game store again?
UK retailer Game promises free in-store WiFi, asks only that you visit
Ever put a game back on the shelf because Metacritic took too long to load? Fortunately, the UK's largest (and wobbliest) games retailer is aware of the impediment and has decided to offer free Wi-Fi in all 341 of its premises before Christmas. The service will be part of BT WiFi's network of hotspots and aim to give gamers access to "all the information they need to buy there and then."
