The Sony <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vaiop">VAIO P</a>: it's a lovely little, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/12/vaio-p-doesnt-have-nothin-on-these-other-awesome-pocket-friend/">pocket-friendly</a> machine that suffers from one glaring flaw: high price. Leave it to the boffins at Sony Style to come up with a solution for that. No, not <em>Sony's</em> Sony Style retailer, but rather <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/kirf">KIRF</a> manufacturer Sony Style, which has crafted this 1.6GHz Atom-powered mini laptop with a 1024 x 600, 8.9-inch screen and a "16GB hard disk" that is either actually an SSD or was manufactured sometime in the late '90s. It offers 1GB of memory (double that for $35 more), WiFi and, according to the specs, "you can carry it to go outside." The price for that kind of convenience? Just $299 -- or $275 if you buy 16 of 'em. Who wants to set up the group buy?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/26/keepin-it-real-fake-sony-style-l80-mini-laptop-cuts-the-vaio-p/">Keepin' it real fake: Sony Style L80 mini laptop cuts the VAIO P's price down to size</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 08:35:00 EST. Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> has been around since <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/10/vaio-p-in-depth-impressions/">last decade</a>, but just recently Sony decided to pry it out of the company's left rear pocket in order to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sony-vaio-p-series-review/">reface it</a> and bless it with a few updated components. We still have a hard time stomaching the $800 price tag, but there's honestly not much competition when looking specifically at this form factor. Have any of you all managed to procure one of these buggers over the past month and change? Is it worlds better than your netbook? Would you change the resolution or keyboard layout? How's that CPU treating you? Would a touchpanel have been better? Go on and toss your opinions down in comments below -- there's no telling how long Sony will keep this thing alive, but you might as well contribute to making the next better, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/02/how-would-you-change-sonys-vaio-p/">How would you change Sony's VAIO P?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 02 Jul 2010 21:43:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vaiop">VAIO P</a> certainly isn't for everyone but, if it's for you, you can now finally get your pre-order in for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sony-vaio-p-series-review/">latest version</a> on the SonyStyle website. Contrary to what we had <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sony-vaio-p-series-gets-an-accelerometer-touchpad-and-a-100-p/">heard earlier</a>, however, the luxury netbook now starts at $899.99 (not $799), which will still get you the same Atom Z530 processor and 2GB of RAM, but a larger 128GB SSD -- the expected 64GB option is seemingly nowhere to be found. You can rest assured that the neon green, hot pink and electric orange color options are all still available, though. Look for it to start shipping around June 25th.<br />

Yesterday we told you what we thought about the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sony-vaio-p-series-review/">VAIO P</a>, an $800 conversation piece of a netbook, and now Sony is giving potential owners something else to talk about. The little laptop has been granted "Remote Keyboard" functionality, turning it into a sort of giant economy sized version of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Playstation3WirelessKeypad/">PlayStation 3 Wireless Keypad</a>, a device we weren't <em>particularly</em> fond of when we first played with it way back in 2008. Like that device, the VAIO P has a battery life that's too short and a keyboard that's uncomfortable to use, but this new ability adds one more piece of function this very form-centric laptop desperately needs. The software isn't officially available in the US yet, but we're told the Japanese version at the source link will do you just fine if you're one of the few, the proud, and the financially irresponsible rocking a VAIO P today.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/sony-turns-vaio-p-into-worlds-most-expensive-ps3-keyboard/">Sony turns VAIO P into world's most expensive PS3 keyboard</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 11 May 2010 07:41:00 EST. In a day of $300 netbooks and $500 tablets, it sure is mystifying to see Sony still pushing a secondary, $700+ Atom-powered device. That's right, Sony hasn't given up on its 8-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vaio+p/">VAIO P Series</a>, and has updated the 1.3-pound mini-laptop with a slightly different design, a faster Atom Z560 processor, touchpad, and last but not least, an accelerometer that lets you tilt the machine to the navigate the web. It's got some pretty cool tricks, that's for sure, and considering that our main complaints about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/10/vaio-p-in-depth-impressions/">the first generation</a> included performance and desktop navigation we're certainty taken with this next iteration. So, does a mild retooling and a smattering of new abilities make the VAIO P a better product, or better yet, worth a lofty $800? Hit that read more link to find out in our full review. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-vaio-p-series-review/">Sony VAIO P Series review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-vaio-p-series-review/#2963794"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/sonyvaiopgal02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-vaio-p-series-review/#2963795"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/sonyvaiopgal03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-vaio-p-series-review/#2963796"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/sonyvaiopgal04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-vaio-p-series-review/#2963797"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/sonyvaiopgal05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-vaio-p-series-review/#2963798"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/sonyvaiopgal06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sony-vaio-p-series-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony VAIO P Series review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sony-vaio-p-series-review/">Sony VAIO P Series review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 10 May 2010 08:01:00 EST. Well, we <em>did</em> have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/28/sony-teases-vaio-ultra-mobile-clippy-chuffed/">some strong evidence</a> to suggest that Sony was planning a design update to its VAIO P Series, but there happens to be a lot more than fresh aesthetics going on with the new 8-inch lappie. Sure, it gets a new matte lid that's available in five different shades, but Sony has also updated the 1.3-pound P Series with an optical touchpad and accelerometer. The former is built into the LCD bezel and, as the picture above shows, is all about navigating the desktop by just holding the screen - the pad is on the right bezel while the right / left mouse buttons are on the left. The accelerometer is probably the most interesting addition - you can flip the device vertically to read documents, but also tilt it to the left or right to move forward or backward while surfing the web. Pretty cool stuff, and there's even more: it's been given a faster Intel Atom Z560 processor option, though the entry-level unit has a slightly-slower Z530 CPU. Still waiting for US pricing to see if Sony can tempt us with its notoriously expensive VAIO P when it begins shipping in June. We'll have a piping hot review of the new VAIO P coming up later this morning. So, will you hit the break for the official PR, or just wait for the review? Decisions, decisions.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: The U.S. has finally released its PR. The VAIO P will start at $799 stateside, though that includes the 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor, and not the newer Z560 upgrade. That's an $100 price drop, but still too much if you ask us. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-sony-vaio-p-series-press-shots/">New Sony VAIO P Series press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-sony-vaio-p-series-press-shots/#2963443"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/newvaiopgal01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-sony-vaio-p-series-press-shots/#2963444"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/newvaiopgal02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-sony-vaio-p-series-press-shots/#2963445"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/newvaiopgal03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-sony-vaio-p-series-press-shots/#2963446"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/newvaiopgal04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/new-sony-vaio-p-series-press-shots/#2963447"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/newvaiopgal05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sony-vaio-p-series-gets-an-accelerometer-touchpad-and-a-100-p/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony VAIO P Series gets an accelerometer, touchpad (Updated: starts at $799)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/sony-vaio-p-series-gets-an-accelerometer-touchpad-and-a-100-p/">Sony VAIO P Series gets an accelerometer, touchpad (Updated: starts at $799)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 10 May 2010 08:00:00 EST. Interesting. Sony's teasing a new VAIO "Ultra Mobile" in Japan. No idea what this could be: refreshed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vaio%20x">VAIO X</a> lappie, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vaio%20p">VAIO P</a> netbook, or a new take on its venerable <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vaio%20UX">VAIO UX</a> micro PC? With Intel's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/moorestown">Moorestown</a> just around the corner we're leaning towards the latter, hoping for it anyway -- Sony doesn't tease just any old product without good reason. Oh, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/20/sony-launches-rolly-teaser-campaign-makes-girls-chicken-dance/">wait</a>.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: A previously proven Sony tipster tells us that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/31/sony-vaio-p-model-pcg-11111l-hits-fcc-with-evdo/">a new VAIO P</a> is the mystery device. In fact, it's orange and the paper clip to the left actually represents the unit as viewed from the side. What does that look like to you? We're thinking an updated <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vaio%20p">VAIO P</a> given that stretched form factor. The previously unheard of VAIO model PCG-11111L is definitely a Sony of some sort complete with CDMA850 and CDMA1900 courtesy of Qualcomm's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gobi">Gobi</a> silicon. Just don't get your hopes up that it'll be sporting Qualcomm's latest chipsets with HSPA+ and LTE coverage as it looks like those frequencies will be locked out with the help of some rather unhelpful firmware at launch. It'll also be packing 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR whenever it does make its first appearance, which, by the looks of a very specific confidentiality request, will be on around May 13th at a Sprint or Verizon retail store. Check the radio bill of materials and CDMA2000 declaration after the break if that's what turns you on... really, that's cool, we're not going to judge.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Looks like PCG-11112L has joined the party, but its only claim to fame is "acting as slave and operating on 2.4GHz band." Sorry, no EVDO for this one.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/31/sony-vaio-p-model-pcg-11111l-hits-fcc-with-evdo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony VAIO P model PCG-11111L hits FCC with EVDO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/31/sony-vaio-p-model-pcg-11111l-hits-fcc-with-evdo/">Sony VAIO P model PCG-11111L hits FCC with EVDO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 06:09:00 EST. Yes, Sony's littlest ultraportable looks to be coming to VZW, popping up on a test page in a configuration with 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and Windows 7 Home Premium. Seemingly (and curiously) no SSD versions will be on offer, possibly to keep down on costs, as the subsidized $299 price is quite a bit lower than the $800 or more you'd be looking to buy one new -- not to mention a good bit more appealing than the other netbooks Verizon currently has on offer for the same price. Mind you, that two year wireless broadband contract won't pay for itself...<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/04/verizon-getting-a-little-vaio-p-to-join-its-netbook-offerings/">Verizon getting a little VAIO P to join its netbook offerings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 07:44:00 EST. Look, the upcoming <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/vaiox">VAIO X</a> might be all fancy with its 11.6-inch screen and all day battery life, but Sony's not ignoring its original underpowered-and-overpriced funky laptop -- three new <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/vaiop">VAIO P</a> configurations just went up on Sony's UK site today, all sporting Windows 7. The big news is that the top-end configuration will now sport a 2.0GHz Atom Z550, but there's also two low-end models with the 1.86GHz Atom <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/29/hey-sony-wheres-the-1-86ghz-vaio-p-for-america/">Japanese P's have had for a while now</a> but only the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/26/sony-launches-vaio-signature-collection-2-000-vaio-p/">$2,000 Signature model</a> carried Stateside. Apart from that we're not seeing much else -- this certainly looks like a modest Win7-related spec bump and not the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/10/sonys-vaio-p-mark-2-hopefully-learns-from-past-mistakes/">rumored</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/05/new-sony-vaio-p-hits-the-fcc-arriving-this-fall/">VAIO P mark 2</a>. No word on pricing or US availability yet, but we're sure to find out more very, very soon.<br />

A new model of Sony's ultraportable <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VaioP/">VAIO P</a> has just passed through the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FCC/">FCC</a>, leading us to surmise that we can probably expect a new model in the very near future. Details are still exceedingly slim on this one, but we know that this one -- model number PCG-1RSL -- will be about the same size as the current VAIO P, and that it packs 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth. The documentation's confidentiality expires in October, so we'll know all the juicy details by then -- if we haven't already found out via other channels. Fingers crossed that it's the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/10/sonys-vaio-p-mark-2-hopefully-learns-from-past-mistakes/">'mark 2' we heard about</a> recently that could right some of those painful, painful wrongs.<br /><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/05/new-sony-vaio-p-hits-the-fcc-arriving-this-fall/">New Sony VAIO P hits the FCC, arriving this fall?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 05 Aug 2009 19:29:00 EST. This $900ish ultra-portable is the very symbol of what tends to go wrong at Sony: beautiful hardware is crippled by software leaving consumers wondering why they paid a premium for such an undistinguished user experience. Now <em>Techradar</em> is reporting that Sony has a VAIO P "mark 2" ready to launch in October or November -- we suspect right after Windows 7 launches. The only real detail provided is that the "mark 2" will feature a "much-improved boot-up time." Whether that's the result of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/10/vaio-p-now-with-more-windows-7/">inherently fast-booting Windows 7</a> alone or via some third party <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/18/corel-brings-instanton-technology-to-sonys-vaio-p/">Instant-on technology like Corel</a>, well, Sony isn't saying.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/10/sonys-vaio-p-mark-2-hopefully-learns-from-past-mistakes/">Sony's VAIO P 'mark 2' hopefully learns from past mistakes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 10 Jul 2009 06:11:00 EST. Dug up by some eagle-eyed KIRF-hunters at 2009's Shenzhen International Netbook Industry Fair &amp; Forum, this guy sports an 8.9-inch display, an Intel Atom (Z515 / Z520 / Z530), 1GB RAM, up to 64GB storage, 3G, WiFi, SD card slot and more. Been getting the feeling that your laptop was missing that certain something, that little detail, the perfect touch... crocodile skin, perhaps? Well check yourself, homeboys and homegirls -- Sony has just launched a line dubbed the "Signature Collection" which should suit all of your fashion / money havin' needs. Besides offering a handful of its laptops like the CS390 in new skins (the aforementioned fake animal flesh in multiple colors, "kaleidoscope," and all kinds of high gloss varieties), Sony is also introducing a snappier version of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> (the P699E/Q) -- a glitzy black iteration that will only be available to 1,000 customers. Sure, you'll have to shell out a totally barbaric $1,999 to get one, but it'll come equipped with a 1.86GHz CPU and a <em>freaking radical</em> 256GB SSD. A glorified netbook is worth $2k in our awesome economy, right? Ponder that and other philosophical conundrums as you peruse the new selections located in the vicinity of an area adjacent to the location of that read link.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.sonyinsider.com/2009/06/26/sonystyle-intros-vaio-signature-collection/">Sony Insider</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/26/sony-launches-vaio-signature-collection-2-000-vaio-p/">Sony launches VAIO Signature Collection, $2,000 VAIO P</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 21:39:00 EST. Sony's finally throwing US consumers a bone by offering its VAIO P with a faster "1.6GHz Atom" processor we presume to be the Z530. Model VGN-P698E also adds a 128GB SSD to the mix along with a Verizon WWAN module and GPS radio. Problem is, the US Version doesn't have an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/sony-vaio-p-set-free-with-xp-still-not-a-netbook/">XP option like the VAIO P in Japan</a> let alone the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/29/hey-sony-wheres-the-1-86ghz-vaio-p-for-america/">1.86GHz Atom Z540 option</a>. That means you'll be stuck watching Vista Home Premium overwhelm that Atom processor and integrated GMA500 graphics when <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/02/windows-7-goes-on-sale-october-22nd/">Windows 7</a> and those new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/04/video-nvidia-tegras-gpu-gets-busy-with-hd-video-and-full-scree/">Tegra-based smartbooks</a> (running <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/18/nvidia-says-windows-ce-is-better-for-smartbooks-than-android/">CE or Android</a>) arrive in October. A whole new day is dawning for the never-ever-a-netbook Sony VAIO P -- those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/sony-vaio-p-set-free-with-xp-still-not-a-netbook/">new processor and drive upgrades </a>apparently have the little PC churning through benchmarks at twice the pace of the original. Most of the benchmark help comes from the SSD drive, but the Atom Z550 doesn't hurt. Meanwhile, Japan is getting a WiMAX version to churn through stereotypically Japanese websites in record time. We'd be jealous if only we lived under 1,000 miles from the nearest WiMAX signal.<br /><a href="http://www.pocketables.net/2009/06/sony-vaio-p-to-come-with-builtin-wimax.html"><br />Read</a> - VAIO P gets WiMAX<br /><a href="http://www.pocketables.net/2009/06/2ghz-atom-z550-benchmarks-on-sony-vaio-p.html">Read</a> - VAIO P benchmarks<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/13/vaio-p-gets-whole-new-lease-on-life-with-atom-z550-processor-ss/">VAIO P gets whole new lease on life with Atom Z550 processor, SSD and WiMAX</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 13 Jun 2009 22:50:00 EST. Ah, Spring. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/29/slew-of-sony-vaio-products-get-minor-spec-bumps/">season</a> of vacations, beach attire and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/29/slew-of-sony-vaio-products-get-minor-spec-bumps/">VAIO updates</a>. We already heard that Sony <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/sony-vaio-p-set-free-with-xp-still-not-a-netbook/">was giving</a> its VAIO P <strike>netbook</strike> a dose of Windows XP and an optional 256GB SSD, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. Indeed, the Type T, Type Z, Type F and Type A are all getting makeovers, so we'll do our best to break 'em down right. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/04/sonys-18-4-inch-vaio-vgn-aw190-gets-reviewed/">beastly A series</a> will continue to be menacing, boasting an 18.4-inch 1080p panel, WiFi, a HDD / SSD hybrid system, 4GB of RAM, a Blu-ray drive and a GeForce 9600M GT. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/28/sonys-16-4-inch-vaio-fw-laptop-gets-previewed/">F series</a> rolls in with a 16.4-inch display, 4GB of memory, ATI's 256MB Mobility Radeon HD 3470, WiFi, a battery good for three hours and a Core 2 Duo P8700. The other guys are seeing far lighter touchups, but you can feel free to have a look at all of these Japan-bound units in the links below.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-updates-plethora-of-vaio-laptops-in-japan/">Sony updates plethora of VAIO laptops in Japan</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-updates-plethora-of-vaio-laptops-in-japan/#2035752"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/sony-vaio-update-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-updates-plethora-of-vaio-laptops-in-japan/#2035753"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/sony-vaio-update-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-updates-plethora-of-vaio-laptops-in-japan/#2035754"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/sony-vaio-update-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-updates-plethora-of-vaio-laptops-in-japan/#2035755"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/sony-vaio-update-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-updates-plethora-of-vaio-laptops-in-japan/#2035756"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/05/sony-vaio-update-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vaio.sony.co.jp%2FInfo%2F2009%2Fproducts_0526.html%3Fs%3Djp_rss_top_0904_01_090526_3">Read</a> - VAIO updates I<br /><a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;langpair=ja|en&amp;u=http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20090526_170084.html%3Fref%3Drss">Read</a> - VAIO updates II<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/sony-updates-plethora-of-vaio-laptops-in-japan/">Sony updates plethora of VAIO laptops in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 26 May 2009 15:59:00 EST. Fascinating. Sony just figured out a simple truth of ultra-portable computing: for all its beauty, elegant hardware packed into a diminutive chassis will never make up for a perpetually sluggish OS, at least not for long. While it comes late to this understanding, Sony is finally making XP a standard load on its new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vaio%20p">VAIO P</a> model VGN-P50. Not exactly aspirational, mind you, and very netbook-like... but at least it gets the OS out of the way of your applications <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/10/vaio-p-now-with-more-windows-7/">unlike the original VAIO P Vista build</a>. Any by not having to downgrade yourselves (or upgrade to Windows 7 RC), you'll keep all of Sony's optimizations like the VAIO P's XMB interface. Starting June 6th, our Japanese friends will also see a 2GHz Atom Z550 processor bump in addition to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/03/sonys-us-vaio-p-ripped-open-in-search-of-sim-slot/">WWAN data as standard</a>. They'll even toss in a 256GB SSD if you tick the right box. While we'd typically expect these specs to go global, the fact that we're still <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/29/hey-sony-wheres-the-1-86ghz-vaio-p-for-america/">stuck with a 1.33GHz </a>processor Stateside makes us doubtful, bitter even, and more than a tad envious. Available June 6th in Japan starting at &yen;85,000 (about $900).<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news_details.php?id=18167">Akihabara News</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/sony-vaio-p-set-free-with-xp-still-not-a-netbook/">Sony VAIO P set free with XP, still not a netbook</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 26 May 2009 01:41:00 EST. According to the folks over at <em>Sony Insider</em>, Sony might have something more than just color changes up its sleeve when it comes to forthcoming variations on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a>. Supposedly, the company has a new series of the diminutive laptop in the pipeline numbered 700 (as opposed to the current 500 line), which <em>SI</em> says looks just like a typical Sony scheme for spec refreshes. Inside the new digits there's a designation for upcoming colors, but the existence of a fresh starting point as well as an additional "Q" in the mix might also mean that there are legitimate hardware changes happening as well. At this point this is just speculation, and it certainly wouldn't surprise anyone if Sony were to bump some of the internals of the netbook... er, ultraportable, but it would likely be a welcome change. What you're looking at is a genuine Lenovo device taken by a trusted source from inside of a showroom within <strike>IBM's Beijing headquarters</strike> Lenovo's Beijing office. The details sent to <em>Engadget Chinese</em> are brief so we can't tell you if it's a working model or not. Nevertheless, it bears all the hallmarks of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/thinkpad%20reserve%20edition">ThinkPad Reserve Edition</a> with just a tad of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> thrown in for taste... so to speak. <div align="left">Thanks to the work of the gang making time over at their Vaio P forum, the folks at <em>Pocketables</em> have been able to compile benchmarks of all the various configurations of the ultraportable. Including the three models available domestically (which all sport a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520) and the various 1.6GHz Z530 and 1.86GHz Z540-based machines available elsewhere, this ragtag group of benchmarksters have come to the conclusion that the main factor when it comes to the machine's performance is the disk drive type. "Yes," writes Jenn Lee, "the faster CPUs give the ALU/FLU numbers a noticeable bump up, but it's not as significant as the increase seen between a HDD and SSD." Hopefully this is some small comfort to those of you who are miffed that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/29/hey-sony-wheres-the-1-86ghz-vaio-p-for-america/">the 1.86GHz model isn't available in the States</a>. Of course, now that we've seen the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/04/keepin-it-real-fake-part-clxxxvi-the-vaino-not-so-ultraportab/">Vaino</a> we're <em>so over</em> Sony's sassy'n'classy non-netbook, but if you're morbidly curious the read link tells the whole sordid tale.</div>

Thinking of picking up a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> for your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/12/vaio-p-doesnt-have-nothin-on-these-other-awesome-pocket-friend/">left rear pocket</a>? Do you call Deutschland home? In need a mobile data plan? If you've somehow managed to answer yes (or "ja," as it were) to all three of those inquiries, T-Mobile Germany has a deal for you. Sony's WWAN-packin' VAIO P -- which has seen itself <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/01/verizon-softens-the-blow-offers-200-rebates-on-vaio-p-wireless/">subsidized</a> in America on Verizon Wireless -- is currently being offered for just &euro;599.95 (VAT included) with a web'n'walk Connect L data plan. For those too uninspired to search, that's a &euro;400 discount from what it costs to buy outright over there. Tempting, <em>nein</em>?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pocketables.net/2009/03/sony-vaio-p-coming-to-tmobile-germany.html">Pocketables</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/wireless/" rel="tag">Wireless</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/07/sonys-vaio-p-going-for-599-95-with-t-mobile-germany-data-contr/">Sony's VAIO P going for €599.95 with T-Mobile Germany data contract</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 07 Mar 2009 16:47:00 EST. Man, that first edition <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> was <em>not</em> the one to buy. Just a month after we saw the thing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/10/vaio-p-in-depth-impressions/">unveiled at CES</a>, we've already learned that a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/16/sony-bringing-gobi-wwan-module-to-vaio-z-tt-and-p/">Gobi-equipped</a> version is on the way. Furthermore, Corel has just proclaimed that all future VAIO Ps will ship with its own InstantON technology to alleviate slow boot times associated with running Windows Vista on an Atom CPU. As with most <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/instanton">alternatives</a>, Corel's version of the software enables users to surf the web, check email, chat online and play back photos, videos and music in seconds after turning on their machine, and it sounds like Corel has crafted a customized interface specifically for this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/20/sony-doth-protest-too-much-dont-call-the-vaio-p-a-netbook/">pocket-friendly(ish)</a> PC. If this just made your decision to run out and snag a VAIO P, you can find the Corel-equipped version now in Japan and elsewhere later this month.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gadgetmix.com/index/?p=3662">GadgetMix</a>]<br /><br /><br /> <strong>Update</strong>: In order to address some understandable confusion with this release, Sony has provided the following response: "<em>All of the P Series shipped to date come equipped with Gobi mobile broadband technology and the instant-mode option, but certain feature deployment varies region by region. As such, the mobile broadband feature is exclusively supported by the Verizon Wireless network for all US customers." </em><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/18/corel-brings-instanton-technology-to-sonys-vaio-p/">Corel brings InstantON technology to Sony's VAIO P</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 18 Feb 2009 10:23:00 EST. Hey, you! <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/03/sonys-us-vaio-p-ripped-open-in-search-of-sim-slot/">VAIO P modder</a>! Hold up on that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/13/sony-vaio-p-gets-hsdpa-wwan-at-last-via-a-mod-naturally/">HSDPA hack</a> just a minute -- er, on second thought, you should probably proceed, 'cause Sony isn't about to take back your current machine when this Gobi-equipped model ships. Quite curiously, Sony has announced here in Barcelona that its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/02/sony-vaio-z-the-engadget-review/">VAIO Z</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/09/sony-vaio-tt-unboxing-hands-on-and-impressions/">VAIO TT</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/10/vaio-p-in-depth-impressions/">VAIO P</a> laptops will soon be embedded with Qualcomm's Gobi, which provides both EV-DO Rev. A and HSDPA support on a single module. As it stands, Sony's US model VAIO P only supports <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/01/verizon-softens-the-blow-offers-200-rebates-on-vaio-p-wireless/">Verizon Wireless' mobile broadband network</a>, which should leave a pretty bitter taste in the mouths of early adopters. There's no mention at all of when Sony plans to start shipping these oh-so-connected machines (nor if they'll be coming to US shores), but we're hoping it's sooner rather than later.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: In order to address some understandable confusion with this release, Sony has provided the following response: "<em>All of the P Series shipped to date come equipped with Gobi mobile broadband technology and the instant-mode option, but certain feature deployment varies region by region. As such, the mobile broadband feature is exclusively supported by the Verizon Wireless network for all US customers." </em>In other words, all existing VAIO P units (even US models) have the Gobi chip -- it's up to you to hack away that Verizon lock and get down to business, though.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/wireless/" rel="tag">Wireless</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/16/sony-bringing-gobi-wwan-module-to-vaio-z-tt-and-p/">Sony bringing Gobi WWAN module to VAIO Z, TT and P </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 12:24:00 EST. Right, so integrated <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WWAN/">WWAN</a> is awesome. But what's <em>not</em> awesome is Sony's decision to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/01/verizon-softens-the-blow-offers-200-rebates-on-vaio-p-wireless/">lock you down</a> to Verizon Wireless on its ritzy new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a>. We've seen one team of investigators <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/03/sonys-us-vaio-p-ripped-open-in-search-of-sim-slot/">hack away</a> in search of a SIM slot to no avail, but we should've known tnkgrl was the real lady for the job. Once again proving just how awesome she is, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/14/acer-aspire-one-not-immune-to-tnkgrls-modding-ways-stuffed-wit/">tnkgrl</a> has not only modified the VAIO P to accept an AT&amp;T SIM card, but she's managed to get it working, host up the pictures to prove it and even provide a how-to guide enabling seasoned hackers to follow suit. Hit the read link for all the requisite details, but be sure you've got lots of spare time to give before taking this one on.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/13/sony-vaio-p-gets-hsdpa-wwan-at-last-via-a-mod-naturally/">Sony VAIO P gets HSDPA WWAN at last... via a mod, naturally</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 00:11:00 EST. So, does the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> have a SIM card slot? That's the question that the X-ACTO knife wielding crew over at <em>Pocketables</em> sought to answer in their most recent tear down, and the answer is, well... both yes and no (but mainly no). For those unaware, the US version of Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/07/sony-gets-official-with-vaio-p-worlds-lightest-8-inch-netbook/">flashiest netbook</a> reserves its WWAN for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/01/verizon-softens-the-blow-offers-200-rebates-on-vaio-p-wireless/">Verizon Wireless</a>, but many have wondered whether a SIM card slot was conspicuously included. Even after ripping out a plastic blockade, it was found that the so-called SIM slot was actually not made for SIM cards, thus crushing any hopes of retroactively hooking one's machine up with AT&amp;T / T-Mobile 3G on-the-go. Hit up the read link for some pretty brutal images of the detective work.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/03/sonys-us-vaio-p-ripped-open-in-search-of-sim-slot/">Sony's US VAIO P ripped open in search of SIM slot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 03 Feb 2009 08:23:00 EST. Yeah, $900 for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/20/sony-doth-protest-too-much-dont-call-the-vaio-p-a-netbook/">netbook</a>, and a hefty chunk of change for Verizon data -- you're not made of money, right? Verizon Wireless is making things a little easier on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> buyers hesitant to activate 3G service, and offering $200 rebates, in the form of a debit card, if they sign up for a two-year data contract. Hopefully Sony's working up a similar rebate program to help with the uptick in eye care due to that impossibly high resolution screen.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/wireless/" rel="tag">Wireless</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/01/verizon-softens-the-blow-offers-200-rebates-on-vaio-p-wireless/">Verizon softens the blow, offers $200 rebates on VAIO P wireless broadband activations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 01 Feb 2009 12:26:00 EST. Sure, we were certainly rocking Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vaiop">littlest VAIO</a> in various locations across these United States, but the things have been taking their time in finding their way to the hands of our fellow gadget lovers. After finally <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/27/sony-vaio-p-begins-shipping-stateside/">starting shipping</a> on Wednesday they're now starting to show up on the doorsteps of lucky folks around the country, with AdamW at <em>HappyAssassin</em> the first to give one the domestic unboxing treatment -- also performing a bonus little comparo with his friendly neighborhood <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/aspireone">Aspire One</a>. Adam indicates that installing Linux is next on his to-do list, which sounds quite tasty to us.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/30/vaio-p-spotted-and-unboxed-in-the-american-wild/">VAIO P spotted and unboxed in the American wild</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 10:27:00 EST. While we Yanks have exactly one CPU option for the newly released <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> (that'd be the 1.3GHz Atom), those in Japan can order up the VGN-P90S with a 1.86GHz Atom Z540 processor. Officially announced to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/07/sony-gets-official-with-vaio-p-worlds-lightest-8-inch-netbook/">ship in February</a>, Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/vaio%20p">VAIO P</a> was just spotted riding the FedEx truck to destiny. At least one lucky reader can gaze longingly at his very own shipping confirmation received from Sony Style USA. That puts him and his VGNP530H/Q on course for a January rendezvous. It's another Obama miracle.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/27/sony-vaio-p-begins-shipping-stateside/">Sony VAIO P begins shipping Stateside</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 01:32:00 EST. Our main man "Rick" over at the <em>Sony Blog</em> has penned another short-form stunner entitled "You Can't Tell a Netbook by its Cover," which aims to dispel the seemingly persistent myth that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> is... gasp, a netbook. We'd thought we'd break down the points (which Sony has helpfully broken down) and see if they hold water. Since the Sony Blog moves through these killers one-by-one, we're going to do the same -- read on for the hard facts.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/20/sony-doth-protest-too-much-dont-call-the-vaio-p-a-netbook/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony doth protest too much: don't call the VAIO P a netbook?</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/20/sony-doth-protest-too-much-dont-call-the-vaio-p-a-netbook/">Sony doth protest too much: don't call the VAIO P a netbook?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 20:53:00 EST. Just last week our hopes for an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/17/sonys-vaio-p-priced-at-300-on-amazons-uk-site/">affordable VAIO P</a> were quickly dashed as Amazon's UK site fixed what was apparently typo, setting the price on Sony's "don't call me a netbook" ultraportable to over $1,000. That's in-line with what we've been expecting for the US release, but still we'd held out some hope for a last-minute price cut. Now, like a twist of the knife, we have photos of the machines for sale in the wild -- with a wild price tag to match. Kip HT took these pictures (one above, one below) at a Hong Kong retailer and passed them along, sending word that the top-spec model was going for the equivalent of $2,188.48. No word on a price for the cheapest model, but it seems we now have confirmation that the Sony tax also applies overseas.<br /><br />[Thanks, Kip HT]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/20/sonys-vaio-p-spotted-for-sale-in-hong-kong-price-tag-spotted-t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony's VAIO P spotted for sale in Hong Kong, price tag spotted too</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/20/sonys-vaio-p-spotted-for-sale-in-hong-kong-price-tag-spotted-t/">Sony's VAIO P spotted for sale in Hong Kong, price tag spotted too</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 09:49:00 EST. Now we're talking. We don't exactly what's going on in the UK, but this <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> for &pound;300 (about $442) makes us seriously want to jet on over. The last time we saw one of these babies priced, we were looking at a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/16/hey-sony-wheres-the-1-6ghz-vaio-p-for-america/">steep &pound;1,368.99 </a>(or around $2,017) -- though that was for the kitted out 128GB SSD version with 3G broadband on-board. Still, we'll happily take this 60GB HDD / 2GB RAM iteration at this price, since it actually hits that sweet spot we were hoping to find the first time around. The only question is whether or not this isn't just some kind of nasty glitch in the Matrix -- it does seem unlikely we'll see price fluctuations this wide. Any word Sony? We'll be reaching for our credit cards and international waybills while we wait.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> If it seems to good to be true, it probably is, right? Right. The price is now back to the astronomical figure of &pound;740 ($1,090). Drat.<br /><br />[Thanks, Varuna]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/17/sonys-vaio-p-priced-at-300-on-amazons-uk-site/">Sony's VAIO P priced at £300 on Amazon's UK site</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 17 Jan 2009 02:23:00 EST. Sure, we Americans are enamored by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/07/sony-gets-official-with-vaio-p-worlds-lightest-8-inch-netbook/">flashy designs</a>, but that doesn't mean we don't appreciate performance. For whatever reason, consumers in the UK, Japan and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/14/the-pirate-bay-eying-sealand-to-escape-digital-persecution/">Principality of Sealand</a> (among other locales) can order up Sony's oh-so-cute <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> with a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor, while we Americans can't get anything other than the stock 1.3GHz chip. So, what gives Sony? Supply chain problems? Too much haterade? None of the above?<br /><br />[Thanks, James]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/16/hey-sony-wheres-the-1-6ghz-vaio-p-for-america/">Hey Sony, where's the 1.6GHz VAIO P for America?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 04:55:00 EST. Sony's <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/vaiop">VAIO P</a> may or may not be a netbook (or even <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/12/vaio-p-doesnt-have-nothin-on-these-other-awesome-pocket-friend/">fit in a pocket</a>), but there's no denying that it's an incredibly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/07/vaio-p-hands-on/">sexy piece of hardware</a> -- it's hard not to be immediately taken with it, at least until you see <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/10/vaio-p-in-depth-impressions/">how slowly it runs Vista</a>. (Windows 7 is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/10/vaio-p-now-with-more-windows-7/">a different story</a>, obviously.) Of course, there's a story behind the unique form factor and crazy 1600 x 768 screen resolution, and designer Takuma Tomoaki shared some choice tidbits recently in an interview with Chinese site cool3c. Of particular note, the P was inspired by the Mini Cooper, which Tomoaki called "small and sophisticated," and the entire design was dictated by the size of the "smallest usable keyboard." Tomoaki also said that the insane screen res was aimed at HD movies, since it can play back 720p content natviely, and that Sony's looking towards integrating the P with both the Walkman and PSP families -- something it's already kinda-sorta doing with the XMB interface on the machine. Plenty more quotes after the break and tons of pics at the read link, like this early VAIO TT-esque mockup that likely launched <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/28/is-this-the-vaio-p/">a thousand Photoshops</a>. We've seen the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a>'s sexy little case, but we've yet to witness the corrugated box in which it resides. Until now, obviously. As the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/12/vaio-p-doesnt-have-nothin-on-these-other-awesome-pocket-friend/">rear pocket stuffing theme</a> trucks on without any signs of stopping, the lucky souls over at <em>AkihabaraNews</em> managed to get ahold of a fully packaged model in order to completely unwrap it on camera. Sony's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VAIOP/">VAIO P</a> <strike>netbook</strike> ultraportable isn't slated to start shipping until February here in the States, but those absolutely certain that they want one stuck in their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/09/jimmy-fallon-and-engadget-raw-and-uncut/">coat</a> and / or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/12/vaio-p-doesnt-have-nothin-on-these-other-awesome-pocket-friend/">rear pants pocket</a> can get in line starting today. The pre-orders are open for Sony's 1.4 pound VAIO, with $899.99 to $1,499.99 securing your spot on the launch list. They're available in a whole heap of colors (garnet red, emerald green, onyx black, crystal white and classic black), and there's even an engraving option if you're already thinking about a rather spectacular Valentine's Day gift.
