Sonic the Fighters, Virtua Fighter 2, and Fighting Vipers are coming to Japan's Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network on November 28. That's only confirmed for Japan, and there remain no dates for a Western release. However, all three games received ratings from German software regulator USK earlier this year. The dates are confirmed on Sega Japan's official website for the 'Model 2 Collection.' The trio of retro fighters are now 400 MSP each, a change from the original announcement of 800 MSP. Oddly, the PS3 price remains at 800 yen, which converts to around $10. However, the three can be bought in a set for 1500 yen, which converts to around $18.50.The site still lists the collection's two other games, Virtual-On and Virtua Striker, as coming soon. In the meantime, we've reached out to Sega for further details on a possible Western release for the collection.

As expected, the company revealed plans to release five games on Xbox Live and PSN that were originally released on the "Model 2" arcade system.Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, and Sonic the Fighters will all be released in Japan in 2012, for 800 Microsoft Points or 800 yen each, and all featuring online multiplayer. Sonic the Fighters features playable Eggman and Metal Sonic, and for the first time, an officially playable version of the Honey the Cat character, which was cut from the arcade game.Virtua Striker and Cyber Troopers Virtual-On will also be released as part of the collection, but are not dated yet. Sega has yet to make any announcements outside of Japan.

Sega of Japan has released a (very) short teaser, er, teasing the impending announcement of five new games. Showing the text "2x5," and following it with five very recognizable sound clips from some of Sega's greatest arcade games, specifically those that ran on its Model 2 board. All told, we hear Akira from Virtua Fighter 2, Bahn from Fighting Vipers, rings from Sonic: The Fighters, and the announcers from Virtua Striker and Virtual On. Sega will apparently be making an announcement about the games tomorrow, presumably that they're coming to download services like PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers and Sonic: The Fighters aren't exactly a surprise, as they've already been rated for Xbox by the USK, but this is the first time we've heard of Virtua Striker or Virtual On. Good news for fans of soccer and giant robots!

  • Virtua Fighter 2 spotted in Yakuza 5's arcades

One of the arcade games available within Yakuza 5's Club Sega game centers is Virtua Fighter 2, available in both revision 2.0 and 2.1 of the arcade game. The tenuous link to Virtua Fighter makes the Yakuza series even more Shenmue-like!Meanwhile, the lascivious table tennis of past games has been replaced with an equally humiliating air hockey game, with the goal of staring at hostesses' cleavage, basically. It's a good thing these activities are fully optional.Other minigames within Yakuza 5 include river fishing, snowball fights, and batting cages, along with ... chicken races? Taiko Drum Master is also available in arcades.

  • Virtua Fighter 2, Sonic the Fighters, and Fighting Vipers rated for Xbox

Virtua Fighter 2, Sonic the Fighters, and Fighting Vipers may be coming to Xbox Live Arcade soon, after recently receiving ratings from German software regulator USK. While USK rated the fighting games for Xbox 360, given Sega's recent track record it's likely the trio are also coming to PlayStation Network. The three mid-90s games are intimately related. Sega AM2 brought Fighting Vipers to arcades a year after Virtua Fighter 2 in 1995. Fighting Vipers featured similar controls, moves, and animations to its more renowned predecessor. It had its own shticks, though, introducing breakable armor along with walls to cage the fighters in. In turn Sonic the Fighters plays similarly to Fighting Vipers, unsurprising since it was the eventual result of a Sega progammer coding in Sonic and Tails to that game. In 1996 Sega released Fighters Megamix, a Saturn crossover which contained characters from all three.games.We've reached out to Sega to confirm any upcoming re-releases of the three fighters.

  • Sega's Halloween App sale is chilling

Sega's Halloween sale might be the scariest yet. Starting tomorrow, the publisher is discounting some of its iOS games, including a couple that we'd literally be afraid to try on a touchscreen interface -- like Gunstar Heroes. You'll also be able to get a game for 99 cents that is abstracted enough from its source to be comparable to a ghost story or urban legend. Have you heard of the iPhone version of the Genesis version of Virtua Fighter 2? Legend has it you can see it if you search the App Store at the stroke of midnight, or any other time. It was once an arcade game, but then a mad scientist made a 2D Genesis game out of it. And then, years later, an even madder scientist ported it to iOS. Other listed deals include Brick People and Chu Chu Rocket! for iPad, for $1 each. Those aren't really that scary.

The iPhone is a surprisingly capable gaming device, something that's been proven quite handily lately by titles like Infinity Blade. Try to forget about that as you read the following news: Sega has released the Genesis version of Virtua Fighter 2 for iPhone. That's right, the least impressive version of one of the most technically demanding fighting games is now available for $2 on a device with no buttons. Enjoy!

Four new games up this week on the VC, and despite the fact that three of them are from Sega's Mega Drive, Nintendo still manages a fair amount of diversity in this week's selection. By diversity, we mean that they don't all involve outer space or badassery ... well, okay, you got us. These games actually are about space and/or fighting, because what the Virtual Console really needed was more beatdowns. In space. It seems like the past few weeks have been filled with Sega Genesis Collection videos. Well, I'm happy to tell you three more have just been released. This time, it's Virtua Fighter 2, Sword of Vermillion and Bonanza Brothers. In all honesty, I don't really remember the last two games, though. But getting to play me some Virtua Fighter on the go has me salivating. See Also:Phantasy Star 2 and Golden AxeKid Chameleon Ecco the Dolphin and Columns

Twistedsypmphony, head moderator guy over at Xbox-Scene, tipped us off to his Frankensteinian project, the Sat-2-360 Controller Adapter. The adapter allows players to use a Sega Saturn control on the 360. Considered by many to have the best d-pad and button layout ever, the Saturn controller is perfect for Street Fighter II or the upcoming Mortal Kombat. The adapter is still a prototype -- and ugly as sin -- but the functionality is promising. The unit is (technically) wireless, though I'd pay for the same thing with a USB adapter. If you'd like to learn more about it -- or make one yourself -- check out the forums at Xbox-Scene. For some X-tra credit, who wants to build me one? Anybody? Now, if SEGA would get cracking on the Live Arcade version of Virtua Fighter 2...

  • Japan outlaws resale of retro game machines

On April 1, Japan's Product Safety of Electrical Appliances and Materials Law (PSE) will take affect, prohibiting the resale of more than 259 electrical devices made before April 2001. The new law was designed to prevent electrical fires, but has been called into question by Japanese retro gamers. "Who do they think they are protecting?" questioned a shopper at the Super Potato secondhand game store. Despite the fact that sellers are permitted to submit products for recertification and that some devices, including most Nintendo and Sony consoles of yesteryear, have escaped the reach of the law, PSE's bureaucratic web of exceptions and conditions has outraged gamers. Unfortunately, Japanese officials have said there are no plans to postpone PSE.[Via GameInsider]
