Rob Kazinsky says Azeroth sets "exceed every expectation"
Warcraft move actor Rob Kazinsky talked a bit with website zap2it about his impressions of the movie's set, at it's all positive. He gave a glowing review of the interiors, saying that they "were some of the most amazing grandiose things I've ever seen in my entire life." Kazinsky asserted that it was clear the Warcraft team "spared no expense on quality, on building things to be representative of the game and of the highest realism." He explains that there were plenty of green-screens in filming as well, and that plenty of the creatures involved absolutely needed to be digitally rendered, and couldn't be done with makeup. That probably comes as no surprise to those of us who play the game--it would be pretty tough to create a flying dragon outside of a computer! It's good news to hear about how excited Kazinsky is about the Warcraft movie project. He was once an avid WoW player himself, and I'm sure it was a real thrill to be part of the project. Many of us are eagerly awaiting the film's release, so it's good to know that the people involved share our enthusiasm.
Ben Foster playing Medivh in Warcraft movie
IGN spoke with actor Ben Foster about his role in the upcoming Warcraft film, and Foster revealed that he's playing none other than Medivh, the last Guardian of Tirisfal, opener of the Dark Portal, and later savior of the world. From the interview, it seems as though the story for the film -- which has never really been properly revealed -- may be a little more clear. According to Foster, "He came up in a time protecting an area, and the way he protected this area was through magic. As peace returned to this land he took a break. He hung up his staff, so to speak, or let his guns get dusty. We meet him as his friends are returning asking for his help in a battle." If Medivh's friends are asking for help regarding a certain portal to another world, we could be looking at a modified retelling of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, one created with a proper cinematic twist. It would certainly be a nice counterpoint to Warlords of Draenor, which is sending players to explore an alternate version of Draenor. Needless to say, Medivh's confirmed appearance, and confirmed actor in the film are a nice surprise -- head to IGN for more from Foster and his role in the Warcraft movie, hitting theaters in 2016.
Get a first look at the Warcraft movie in Empire Magazine
It's not so much of a first look as it is a first glimpse, but the latest issue of Empire brings us the first photo from the Warcraft film set. Focusing on director Duncan Jones watching the filming, the photo doesn't give us much info on what we can expect, but the monitors do give us a tantalizing first look of the Stormwind throne room -- and if this is anything like what the finished product will look like, it's very reminiscent of World of Warcraft. Filming started this January, but we've yet to find out much about the work in progress, which isn't due in theaters until March 11, 2016. But as filming continues, we're sure to find out more -- if nothing else, expect the movie to make a big splash at this year's BlizzCon -- - but in the meantime, we'll have to make do with this tiny, grainy image.
Dominic Cooper rumored to be joining Warcraft film cast
If you thought yesterday's cast announcement would slow down the Warcraft film rumors, you would be wrong because the rumors keep flying. Today we're hearing that Dominic Cooper -- whom you might know from Captain America or Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter -- may be joining the cast as well. And though this isn't confirmed, quite a few of the past movie casting rumors have proven true -- and, who knows, we may still see Colin Farrell joining the cast. Still, none of the rumors have given a hint as to who's playing what, so there's still a lot we don't know about the upcoming Warcraft movie. Come on, Blizzard, can we at least get a hint?
Warcraft movie slated for discussion at BlizzCon
The upcoming Warcraft movie will get its own one-hour panel at BlizzCon 2013. The panel will feature director Duncan Jones as well as Chris Metzen and Rob Pardo on hand to discuss the transition of Warcraft from game to screen. Taking place from 1-2pm Saturday on the Main Stage, the one-hour presentation may just clear up some burning questions players have had about the film -- like what exactly the film is going to be about, among many, many other things. The movie itself was first announced as a possibility all the way back in 2006, and the last time we had a panel at BlizzCon dedicated to the film was a Q&A panel back in 2007. Since then, discussion about the movie had mostly dwindled out, leaving many to wonder if we'd ever see Warcraft on the big screen at all. 2013 marked an absolute flurry of new information on the film, as Duncan Jones was announced as the new director, filming was rumored and later confirmed to begin in 2014, a mood piece teaser was shown at San Diego ComicCon, story and casting rumors flew, and we were at last given an actual release date for the film: December 18, 2015. So what can we expect from this year's movie panel? That's a very good question. No doubt discussion of the evolution of the film may take place, although whether or not any questions will be taken at the panel hasn't really been made clear. But that small teaser piece from ComicCon hasn't aired anywhere since it was shown in San Diego. Will we get to see the teaser? Will we get a different teaser? Will casting be announced for the film? Warcraft movie comes to theaters December 18, 2015
Warcraft is due in theaters on December 18, 2015, from Legendary and Universal Pictures, the official World of Warcraft account tweeted today. The film is based on Blizzard's longstanding Warcraft universe, directed by Duncan Jones. Jones is the director of Moon and Source Code, and he happens to be David Bowie's son. Take that one to trivia night, folks. Warcraft originally had Sam Raimi as director, but he bailed to take on Oz: The Great and Powerful. The project is sticking with a script by Charles Leavitt, the writer of Blood Diamond and K-PAX. Filming begins January 13, 2014.
Warcraft movie release date announced
Players lucky enough to attend the San Diego Comic-con this year saw a concept trailer. Filming dates have been announced, and rumors have run rampant about who will star. Today, however, takes the cake -- the official Warcraft Twitter has just announced the release date for the Warcraft film. We're pleased to announce that @Legendary Pictures' WARCRAFT will be released by @UniversalPics on December 18, 2015. - World of Warcraft (@Warcraft) October 1, 2013 Considering how little we actually know about the subject of the film, the script, or the actual identity of the actors cast in the film -- much less if the film has actually wrapped up casting -- the announcement of a release date comes as a bit of a surprise. But when one thinks of just how long most players have been waiting for the release of a Warcraft film, having a firm date to look forward to is an absolute blessing. We've waited for years, and now we've got a date to mark on our calendars. Will you be in theaters December 18, 2015?
First Warcraft teaser trailer debuted at San Diego Comic Con
Multiple sites are reporting that a teaser trailer for the World of Warcraft movie - simply titled Warcraft, was shown earlier today at San Diego Comic Con. The panel, featuring Warner Bros. and Legendary films, showed trailers for the upcoming Seventh Son and Godzilla before whipping out the surprise teaser for the Warcraft film and announcing that filming begins in 2014. No footage of the teaser seems to be available online yet, but news sites described the trailer as a lone knight standing in an alien, desert world with a glowing green sky. After looting a discarded suit of armor, the knight is besieged by creatures coming over the hills. As an orc approaches, swinging his sword down, the trailer then cut to the logo. Although the trailer isn't currently available online, we may see it pop up at some point soon. Director Duncan Jones made a brief appearance to mention that the trailer is a "mood piece," and that official shooting will begin early next year. While some players may have been doubtful about the eventual existence of the Warcraft film, its eventual existence is growing more certain by the day -- and the teaser definitely has everyone talking. A few weeks ago, Hollywood headlines were filled with talk that director Sam Raimi is trying to secure Hilary Swank for his next film, Oz: The Great and Powerful. Now, I know that's not especially interesting to the Warcraft community, but it got me thinking about the Warcraft film again, since Raimi will eventually be directing it. Who will Raimi try to cast in the Warcraft movie? Then around the same time, the WoW Insider team got word on the further developments of Michele Morrow's campaign to land the role of Sylvanas Windrunner. This sparked the idea that someone on staff should put together a dream cast for the future Warcraft movie. As the token film school dropout, I jumped on the assignment and promptly put together the most expensive movie cast list ever. Director predicts Warcraft film will break video game movie trend
Last week, Badass News posted an article detailing an interview with director Duncan Jones in which the Warcraft movie was one of the main topics of discussion. Jones is the son of David Bowie and director of the impressive science fiction flick Moon, as well as Source Code, another sci-fi title being released later this year. Though the interview reveals nothing about the production of the Warcraft movie, Jones thinks that the film is going to break the ongoing trend of terrible film adaptations of video games. In the article, Jones says he believes it's possible to make a good adaptation -- it just has to be approached properly. "A good game adaptation is where you find the story or the emotional aspect that's at the heart of a computer game and you replicate that on film. It doesn't mean you need to have first person perspective or try and capture the mechanics of a game," he says. Jones thinks the Warcraft film will be the film to break the mold because director Sam Raimi seems to be approaching the film correctly. "From the little I've read of interviews with him, the way he's approaching it makes so much sense. It's what I was talking about – it's not worrying about how the game plays, it's about creating the world of the game and investing the audience in that world." Jones explains that he's a serious gamer himself and is skeptical about other directors who claim the same. He doesn't think most directors have the time to be both hardcore gamers and filmmakers. Jones, on the other hand, says he stays up all night to accommodate his gaming habit and cites titles like Starcraft 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops. He also says he's looking forward to Diablo 3. Jones admits that he's "hugely jealous" of Raimi's getting the chance to direct the Warcraft film; the writer of the article goes so far as to suggest that Jones have a chance at directing it, since Raimi set it aside to work on The Great and Mighty Oz. That's not really quite how Hollywood works, though, so unless Raimi steps down from the project himself, I wouldn't count on his losing the project just yet.
Rumorbuster: David Wenham might play Arthas
There's a rumor going around that Australian actor David Wenham (who you'll probably know as Faramir in Lord of the Rings, though he was also in 300 and Van Helsing) is supposed to play Arthas in the upcoming Sam Raimi-directed Warcraft movie -- but not so fast. The whole thing appears to stem from a listing over on the Internet Movie Database's listing for Warcraft (which, by the way, seems to have a working title -- a few days ago, it was just called "Untitled Sam Raimi Project"), where Wenham's name was inserted as rumored to play Arthas. That in and of itself means nothing at all -- the IMDb can be updated and edited by almost anyone that comes to the site, and while it could be that Wenham's agent is trying to get his name out there for a certain part, it's just as likely that some overzealous Lord of the Rings fan is trying to do some casting of their own. Wenham's name under there as "rumored" has about as much validity as a mention on Wikipedia: not much.Oh, and there's one more issue -- as discussed in this forum post, Arthas himself probably won't even be in the Warcraft movie, if what Blizzard told us at BlizzCon a little while back is to be believed. Back at the BlizzCon 2007 movie panel, we were told by the panel (including Chris Metzen) that the movie is supposed to start a year before WoW begins, which means Arthas is sitting up in Icecrown doing a whole lot of nothing. When fans specifically asked about Arthas, we were told that while the movie would certainly reference him, it likely wouldn't focus on him at all. So while Wenham (or his fans) may be angling for the part of Arthas, even if he got it, he probably wouldn't get much screen time anyway.Of course, that's assuming that what we were told two years ago still holds. Gary Whitta, who worked on a screenplay for the film, says that Sam Raimi has his own ideas about the movie, so, as BlizzPlanet points out, maybe he wants Arthas front and center. But for now, the David Wenham rumor is still just a made-up rumor, and a really thin one at that.
