Sega sneaked the Image Epoch-developed apocalyptic RPG Sands of Destruction into stores this week. In a display of corporately synergistic timing, FUNimation has also released the anime online -- for free! If you don't mind watching it in a window on your computer, you can see either the first two episodes in dubbed format or all 13 episodes with subtitles. Of course, for those of you who enjoy watching things on televisions, FUNimation plans to release a two-DVD set containing the entire season on January 26. We haven't watched yet, but we're definitely looking forward to this feel-good tale of some kids out to destroy the world and save humanity from beast-man enslavement. [Via GSW]

Though Sands of Destruction has been out in Japan since late 2008, developer imageepoch was present at Tokyo Game Show conducting interviews for the DS RPG in order to promote the January 2010 Western release. We spoke with representatives from both imageepoch and Sega about the unconventional 2D game, learning a bit about what's been changed for the US version, talking about how cute the character Taupy (right) is and finding out what the deal is with the title change in the most unexpectedly awkward way possible.%Gallery-24031%

Sands of Destruction has been a long time coming. After being released in Japan in September, it was announced for North America in December 2008, and then given a distant release date of January 2010. I was honestly a little surprised that the English version of Image Epoch's RPG was actually in attendance in Sega's meeting room at TGS, as that suggests it's a real game that Sega actually intends to publish. %Gallery-24031%

Funimation has obtained the rights to the anime series based on Sega's upcoming DS RPG, Sands of Destruction. Funimation plans to begin airing the first thirteen-episode season of the Production I.G-produced anime in spring of 2010. Like the DS game, the show stars a kid named Kyrie who gets drawn into a secret organization determined to destroy the world -- in order to free humans from subjugation. In the same press release announcing the anime deal, Sega offered a January 2010 release date for the DS game itself. The game was first announced for North American release in December of last year. There's something kind of nostalgic about waiting over a year for the translation of an RPG.%Gallery-24031%

Sega's been quiet about Sands of Destruction since the December announcement of a US release for the world-ending game. Today, it released a new trailer for the RPG which, rarely for the genre, is all gameplay. Slightly fuzzy, zoomed out gameplay, but all gameplay. New screens have also been add to the gallery. We might not be incredibly enthused about the voice acting, but the combination of 16-bit style 2D role-playing and, uh, giant animate teddy bears flinging smaller animate teddy bears at monsters means Sands of Destruction is staying on our radar. It's still, unfortunately, a distant blip -- Sega currently has the game scheduled for a winter 2010 release.%Gallery-24031%

  • Sega officially announces Sands of Destruction

We knew it was coming, but Sega finally saw fit to send out the press release announcing the North American version of World Destruction, called Sands of Destruction. The press release is even dated December 4! We'd love to know what happened to make Sega decide at the last minute to sit on the announcement for a week.According to the press release, Sands of Destruction follows a group called the World Annihilation Front who, in an attempt to free the world from the tyrannical Ferals, decide to destroy it, using the powers of a kid named Kyrie Illunis. The "voice system" seems to have been dubbed the "Quip System" in the US release: characters can enhance and change their status in battle by saying "inspiring battle commands," which are found throughout the world and equipped by characters. It's a game about trying not to save the world, in which you battle by talking! All they need in order to totally break JRPG tradition is to put a very friendly, outgoing person in the lead who remembers his childhood just fine.%Gallery-24031%[Thanks, Volcynika!]

For their planned December 4 announcement of the US release of Image Epoch's RPG World Destruction, Sega PR uploaded a set of English screenshots to their FTP server. They then proceeded not to make an announcement. NeoGAFfer Volcynika spotted the suspicious "Sands of Destruction" folder on the FTP server and checked the contents to find four screens, which you can see in our gallery. We can confirm that yes, they were found on Sega's PR server. It's not too much of a surprise: Image Epoch president Ryoei Mikage told Siliconera at TGS that the company was currently working on the North American version of the game, with new music from Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda. We're happy to see an "official" "announcement," though, of course! We expect a for-real announcement soon, to catch up with this leak.%Gallery-24031%

Along with the news that World Destruction will be releasing in Japan on September 25th (shock, gasp, it was pushed back a week!), Sega has released a new video for the title. Although it shows some more gameplay footage, most of it is your classic RPG fodder and not battle scenes. Still, we're pretty impressed by how it seems to be turning out. Not only does it look great and have an interesting story, but the 300 event scenes and plethora of maps and voices that Sega promised should be enough to excite any RPG gamer. Also, folks interested in the game (or anime, or comic) can go and check out World Destruction's official website. There's not much in the "Game" section, aside from a nice-looking background and a gorgeous song (the one from previous trailers), but the song alone is enough to get us to keep on coming back until they add some content.

Making the most of its multiple media production, Sega debuted two new commercials for its forthcoming World Destruction DS game during the Japanese premiere of its accompanying World Destruction anime series. The videos are blurry, and there's less than fifteen seconds of actual in-game footage between the two clips, but you can still see a preview of the JRPG's combat! Plus, one of the girls totally kicks a prison door off its hinges. Sega has also announced that it will throw in a "premium soundtrack" for anyone who puts in a preorder for World Destruction's September 18th release in Japan. The CD will contain five tracks picked out by composer Yasunori Mitsuda, whose name you should recognize from his work on Chrono Trigger and the Xenosaga series. Jump past the break for the album cover and second commercial!%Gallery-24031%

World Destruction isn't just a game. Apparently, Sega wants to create a worldwide media onslaught of WD information. There's the standard JRPG in development, a TV-destroying anime, and even comics hitting the stores. To assault all your senses, a weekly web radio show has now been announced, to begin airing on July 3rd.The show will be a blog of sorts, with various members of development staff coming in every Thursday to discuss project updates and reveal detailed World Destruction information. Voice actors Furuya Toru and Yuuko Kobayashi will be hosting, and producer Youiti Shimosato will be the go-to guy for any specific questions. It's all in Japanese, so that's kind of a problem. Minor setback -- go ahead and tune in anyway. In order to learn a new language, you need to listen to it at least once, right?%Gallery-24031%

  • Trailers created for World Destruction

Following Square Enix's lead, Sega has released new CG-dominated trailers for its forthcoming RPG, World Destruction: The Will That Leads, replete with dramatic music and shots of sky-bound airships.Advocates of in-game clips need not raise their voices, as the publisher has put out an alternate trailer with combat scenes , as well as another movie advertising the planned anime, World Destruction: The Six People Who Destroy the World, both videos embedded past the post break. We're sure that were it possible, Sega likely would have put together a trailer for the upcoming World Destruction: Two Angels manga, too.The trailers and details for the mix media production were debuted at a recent Sega meeting, in which the game's scheduled Japanese released date (September 18th) and 2 gigabits cart were revealed. The game includes some 300 event scenes, a large variety of maps, and, in particular, a large set of voices. World Destruction will be making the most out of all that space, featuring over 300 event scenes, a generous amount of maps, and an impressive set of voices. Check our gallery below for screenshots, character art, and CG grabs from the trailer!%Gallery-24031%

Famitsu has posted a handful of new screens for Sega and Image Epoch's topsy-turvy RPG, World Destruction. As well as giving us the first glimpse of the battle system at work, there's also some character art featuring members of the World Destruction Committee (and main protagonists) Kirie and Molte, and a wolf/man captain from the World Salvation Committee, which, as the name suggests, is out to save the world, and is thus the direct enemy of the WDC.Also appearing is an unnamed member of the Golden Lion, a separate guerilla group with similar aims to the World Destruction Committee (disposing of the World Salvation Committee) but a different methodology (not totally destroying the whole world). It all sounds very entangled.Famitsu also mentions one of World Destructions' more unique selling-points: the ability to purchase and then equip different voices for your characters, which will presumably change the course of battles. The details of how this will work are still a little cloudy, but it sounds like a potentially fascinating addition.

The protagonist of Sega's superstar RPG World Destruction is a boy named Kyrie who joins a secret organization called the World Destruction force, whose goal is not to save the world from destruction, but to cause the world to end. Kyrie was apparently a normal student until one day when he just up and joined a shadow organization devoted to the destruction of the world. You'd probably want to destroy the world too if the world you lived in was populated by monsters who enslaved humanity. You'd probably also just want to try your unique world-ending power once. Famitsu's got lovely screens of this vaguely morbid game!

Not to be outdone by The World Ends With You, Sega has announced its own apocalypse-impending RPG in the latest issue of Famitsu, World Destruction. With Masato Kato, Yasunori Mitsuda, and Kunihiko Tanaka managing the game's script, music, and character design, Image Epoch (Luminous Arc) is also working on the production, clearing up at least one of the developer's three mystery projects listed on its company site.World Destruction will be a traditional RPG with turn-based combat and giant bosses filling up both of the system's screens. Following Blue Dragon and Inazuma Eleven's example, Sega will accompany the game's summer release with an anime starting July. Turn your Bible to the Book of Revelation and head past the post break for a glimpse at two of World Destruction's characters.
