  • WoW Moviewatch: 4 people you should NOT raid with

4 people you should NOT raid with is the latest video from Nora Sunstrider -- a compilation video with a helpful list of people you should probably try to avoid when running a raid. It's a fairly simple machinima from a technical standpoint, but the jokes and the voice acting are both on point and had me laughing. The last subject in particular reminded me of several people I've raided with over the years -- in a good way. I have to say I really like how Nora puts her videos together. Her sense of timing is excellent, and her videos are just the right length to get the joke across without dragging out unnecessarily. She's definitely worth keeping an eye on -- if you liked this video, check out Nora's Youtube channel for plenty more. Interested in the wide world of machinima? I'm not sure if Doc Brown would approve, but Slightly Impressive traveled in time to visit the fabled world of the past, going Back to Vanilla. The legend and stories of this mythical time inspired the intrepid explorer to talk to the natives and test the truth of their inimitable skill and unmatched knowledge. I especially liked the subtle critiques of our rose-colored glasses, the overhyped claims of leveling difficulty, and the infinite hypothesis that raids that were so much better. I enjoyed this story and I hope to see Slightly Impressive do a few more sequels. We definitely need a McFly reference, though. Interested in the wide world of machinima? SimTgirl produces some incredible visuals in her video, and Lie is no exception. I'm not in love with the song, though it isn't bad, but SimTgirl managed to drag out some shockingly emotional moments and convincing narrative in the video. I especially liked the home video effect, which settled realistically into the overall piece. The biggest drawback in this video is the font, lettering, and spelling. I get where the lyrical accompaniment was going, but some brutal editing was needed in a few places. Overall, Lie was good, but spelling words wrong can be disastrous to the final effect. Seed of Hate: A Warrior's Tale is a machinima created by Kenneth Clark to tell the story of his game character. Fan films like this are at once some of the finest things to come out of World of Warcraft but also the most difficult to pull off. It's easy to fall into self-aggrandizement, and you usually have to rely on art and technical skill to grant gravitas to the whole thing. Clark seems to be treading that water nicely. This trailer promises visuals and narrative motion, as well as just enough back story to hope the full version will actually have something to say. All in all, the trailer looks pretty good, and we can hope the final comes to solid fruition. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! This is a mindblowing tour of the The Fall of Gnomeregan, with a strong flair for storytelling, eye-popping graphics, and a smooth, riveting soundtrack. This is one of those rare, story-based machinimas we just don't see very often. I'll let Harmon Productions describe the work: This is a Machinima/Animated retelling of my first ever Machinima video "Plight of the Gnomes" with Gnomeregan and most WoW assets converted into Source Filmmaker and rendered there besides some spots composited in. A huge chunk of the work was getting Gnomeregan and other things into the engine and making it look as best as possible, and despite some weirdness here and there I think it's a success. If you take the time to watch this video, I think you'll agree with Harmon. It really is an amazing piece, and probably one of the best you'll see for a while. Silver Letomi busts out a parody of a favorite snowman tune from Frozen with Do You Wanna Raid Old Content? After all, we're all stuck in the lull between expansions, and the old drive to keep pushing is getting harder and hard. Somewhere between a nostalgic reminder of raiding days and the angsty longing for a game partner, Do You Wanna Raid Old Content? is a fun live-action video from a great singer. Also, shout out for the Bad Wolf. We all totally see what you did there. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! You haven't lived until you've seen the most recent threat to Azeroth: a Pandaren Lich King. The newest machinima from AFK Players portrays the final experience in our beloved game: Hearthstone: The Ultimate Expansion. Make sure you stay through the credits to hear the very special music mix. It's hard to compare to AFK Players. They consistently knock it out of the park in terms of content, humor, and sheer animation. And now that they've tackled Hearthstone for real, I feel like we can all relax and build our new decks together. Interested in the wide world of machinima? The Azeroth News Network: Love Is In The Air Special by Slightly Impressive spells out the inconsistencies and oddities involved in this February holiday. While the video is a tiny bit late for the real life Valentine's Day, there's still plenty of comedic value left for it in Azeroth. I've always wondered if it made me a creeper, sitting lonely in Dalaran and desperately begging strangers to have a picnic. But, hey, it's just an achievement. What's love got to do with it? It's a special kind of "teaser trailer" that features original 3D graphics and clocks in at 5 minutes. That's more than a teaser; that's full blown movie in some corners of the machinima world. And while I'm eager to see the final video, I had plenty of fun with Xim Voodoo's Children of Stone trailer. Most of the characters look great, of course, though it can be a little disconcerting to see the rich, cluttered world of WoW turned into smooth 3D angles. Still, I think the story will be what really drives the final product, and we're eager to see it. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! The gnomes are on the edge of a technological solution, and PvP is worse than ever before. So when the NPCs receive an upgrade courtesy of Ian Beckman and Jesse Cox, we get the chance to enjoy RoboGuard. I'm pretty sure this version is just as valid as any other remake hitting the cinemas. My favorite parts are actually the scenes leading up to RoboGuard's big reveal. The final punchline is pretty good, but wouldn't have RoboGuard been that much more explosive is created by goblins instead? The world may never know. Interested in the wide world of machinima? • WoW Moviewatch: Vanilla WoW in a Minute

    02.12.2014

Warlords of Draenor cometh, and it won't be long before we're all not-really-time-traveling into the past to either bring back heroes of legend or kill them. You know, whichever. The game mechanics are getting another overhaul, and the number of buttons are getting trimmed down. As I read over complaints and rose-colored glasses of how the original game was so much better, and so pure, I thought of this video by Wowcrendor. One of his earlier pieces, Vanilla WoW in a Minute is a good way to remember what the game used to really be like. It wasn't all traipsing through flowers with 40 of your best friends, and nobody needs to go back to that version of Alterac Valley. Interested in the wide world of machinima? • WoW Moviewatch: Lowbies: The Great Boost

    by

    02.11.2014

It's hard to believe that Slightly Impressive is already up to episode 5 of Lowbies. When the guild master gets distracted by pet battles, the group of Lowbies need to tackle the decision whether to boost themselves up to level 90. As you might expect from a comedy series, all does not go according to plan. I think it's interesting that Griffter uses this video as a way to highlight some unexpected drawbacks to boosting a character. Presented with dozens of new buttons and skills, an eternal lowbie might not even know what to do at max level! Also, training can be problematic. And fishing. Fishing is always a problem. What Are NPCs Thinking 5 is the latest installment in the secret thoughts of Azeroth's most overlooked characters. Once again narrated by the incredible Wowcrendor, this series just keeps getting better. With sly references to other games and plenty of jokes, this video also introduces the newest superhero to WoW: Totem-Arm! He's got an arm that's also a totem that's also his arm! I think fanfic is probably right around the corner. If you want a few minutes of giggles and good spirits, make sure you hit up What Are NPCs Thinking 5. Interested in the wide world of machinima? Kakio's new movie attempts to fills us in to the recent events back in Northrend. What's going on in the icy north? According to Back to Northrend, it's mostly a bunch of mobs standing around telling bad jokes. Which, frankly, I'm totally okay with. This video is a little bit of a paradox. On one hand, I found myself enjoying the jokes, the timing, and even most of the narration. The animation was just fine, made up of in-game graphics. The challenge is the vocal recording. That Death Knight-like echo was pretty distracting, and took away from the overall enjoyment of the parody. Still, it's pretty good stuff, and a step in the right direction for Kakio. Slightly Impressive steps forward in time to brings us a vision of the next expansion (after that warlord one), named Winds of Murlockia. And while we've seen plenty of expansion parodies in the past, Impressive's nod to the soul-crushing history of raids gone by is appreciated. Oh, sure, rose colored glasses help us reminisce about week-long rep grinds, but I think we're better off these days. • WoW Moviewatch: Burning Crusade The Movie

Let me tell you about this guy named Jack. Jack makes some of the absolute best movie compilations of kill videos that I have ever seen, and probably ever will see. The pinnacle for me was always the movie shown above, simply titled Burning Crusade The Movie. It's not just about the stunning visuals, it's also about the clever use of in-game sound files from various NPCs in order to tell the tale. It's a long video, but it's well worth watching -- not only for the nostalgia factor, but because it has gotten me even more ridiculously excited to see Warlords of Draenor and a return to an Outland that isn't really Outland at all. Jack has done a crazy amount of WoW movies over the years. You can check out his Youtube channel for movies dating all the way back to the original vanilla 40-player version of Naxxramas. Sadly, we haven't seen any Mists-related content from Jack, and I don't know if we will at this point. But Burning Crusade The Movie remains one of my favorite kill-compilation videos to date, and it's always worth a re-watch.

Before watching Crendor's latest machinima, the first thing you should know is that it contains spoilers for the end of patch 5.4. Are we all clear on that? Okay. If you don't mind spoilers, or you've already defeated Garrosh, this fan-dub of the Horde's version of the end-raid cinematic just may well hold a few good laughs for you. I particularly like the bit where... well, I won't say it, because spoilers and all. The movie isn't quite a smash hit, in my opinion, there are some flat parts that didn't work for me, but there were also a few laugh-out-loud one liners and gags, so it's worth it. If you like goofy spoof, this is a machinima for you. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Grammar has been a plague to gamers for a long time. In the heat of battle, dodging fierce attacks and casting magical spells, you rarely have time to type at length. And even if you do manage to smash a few words out between attacks, you even less commonly have the time to check your grammar. But there are limits to the largesse we grant one another about grammar. Which makes it a perfect time for Wowcrendor to educate us all on How to Win at Grammar. • WoW Moviewatch: Beware of the Baby B

    03.16.2010

Michael Gray is still feeling a bit under the weather, and I have heard no news on the status of the puppy, so! Today's offering is another of the winners of the Alienware Rise to Power contest! Beware of the Baby B is a charming little three minute story by Olibith, who we've featured before numerous times on WoW Moviewatch. Much like the other Rise to Power winners, it's a pretty jaw-dropping movie in terms of effects and production. Beware of the Baby B is a tale about a baby beholder with a big appetite, and what happens when said appetite gets entirely out of control. The visual effects are, as always with Olibith's work, really well done -- there were only a couple of lines of voice work in the movie, but really that's all it needed. I liked the variation in shots from the eyes of critters, and the eyes of Baby B -- I've never seen a non-combat pet look quite as horrifying as it did here! The loading screen gag in the middle also cracked me up. While I'm used to seeing... spicier stuff from Olibith, this departure from the usual entertaining norm was an awfully sweet, endearing little film, with music taken from the game that suited the whole piece quite nicely. As with the other winners we've highlighted so far, it's immediately obvious why the film won. Congrats to Olibith -- now take that fancy computer and make us some more movies to watch! • WoW Moviewatch: World of Gnomecraft 2.0

    03.15.2010

Michael Gray is feeling a little under the weather, so I've kidnapped his column. He can have it back in exchange for his puppy. Moving on, we've got one of the winners of the Alienware Rise to Power contest who's name should be familiar -- Baron Soosdon, who's delightful works such as T for Thunderfury, No Point: Stretching Time, and Sex, Gnomes And Videotape: So I Went To France have been featured before here on WoW Moviewatch. World of Gnomecraft 2.0 is another solid addition to his stable of machinima videos, and honestly, it's no wonder it was a winner. World of Gnomecraft 2.0 is presented as a movie trailer of sorts about... well, gnomes. Gnomes that have had enough. That's really all I am going to say so as not to give anything away. This is quite possibly the most gnomes I have ever, ever seen in a machinima. Whether this is a good or a bad thing, I haven't decided yet -- but the whole piece had me cracking up about thirty seconds in. I could not stop giggling. There was no voice work to speak of, just the music and the text -- so let me point out, I love fonts. I collect fonts. I want whatever font he was using in this thing, and I am surprised I don't have it yet. Typography geeking aside, the video itself was simply fun to watch. The effects were clean and smooth, the transitions were well done, the music went remarkably well with the subject material, and it had every ounce of visual flair I've come to expect from Baron Soosdon. Plus, gnomes -- and a cameo from King Varian Wrynn that had me in stitches. Congrats to Baron Soosdon on his prize -- he earned it. P.S. Dear Baron, do you give lessons? I want to make pretty things. I may have a puppy to trade when Michael gets back!* *I won't really have a puppy. :( Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch!
