First you could stream the yesterday's keynote, then you could download it via iTunes, and now you can stream it in HD. Nothing beats seeing an Apple presentation in HD, you can almost smell the Old Spice on Phil Schiller. Thanks, Jeff.

  • Steve Jobs has a 'common bug'

Normally I wouldn't even post about this, but several people have commented on the way Steve Jobs looked during his keynote yesterday. Most folks seemed to think that he looked a little thinner than usual, which of course makes one think back to his battle with cancer. An Apple PR person assured the Wall Street Journal that Steve has been fighting a 'common bug' for the last few weeks, and he is on the mend.Everyone here at TUAW hopes Steve feels better soon! We should probably send him an iCard before they go away.

  • TUAW predicts WWDC '08: How did we do?

The dust has settled from the stampede of announcements from yesterday's WWDC Keynote so it's time to take a look back at our predictions and see how we did! First, let's take a look at what was released at this year's WWDC: Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) seeds for developers MobileMe iPhone 3G iPhone 2.0 firmware ship date Let's see what we predicted: .Mac rebranding (with support for iPhone/PC) iPhone 3G Mac OS X 10.6 seeded iTablet Mac nano Flash on the iPhone Video on the iPhone Enterprise solutions for iPhone Over-the-Air syncing for "MobileMe" Redesigned MacBook Pro iPhone 2.0 delayed / ship date So, how did we do?Many of the things we predicted did actually come true (to our amazement!). We are extremely pleased with our predictions this year as we guessed everything that was released. All in all, we were 54.5% (6 right, 5 wrong) correct with our predictions. But we were spot on with the .Mac rebranding ("MobileMe"), 10.6 "Snow Leopard" preview, and the iPhone 3G / iPhone 2.0 announcement / delayed release. %Poll-15454%

  • Apple posts Snow Leopard Server information

Many people forget that Apple makes 2 variants of OS X for Macs: client (that's the one you run on your personal Mac) and Server (which is normally found on a server, oddly enough). We've already posted (twice) about the client version of Snow Leopard, but what about Apple's next iteration of their server product?Head on over to the Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard page that Apple just put up, and you'll find out a thing or two about what your Mac server will be serving up in about a year or so. Amongst the new features we find: iCal Server 2: Adds group and shared calendars as well as a way to invite non-iCal Server users to meetings and events. Also includes a web app to let people access their calendars on the go. Podcast Producer 2: This little known Apple app makes creating content and getting it into the iTunes Store a snap. This version looks like it adds a number of great features including support for recording both the presenter and the presentation they are giving and a way to locally host your podcasts. Address Book Server: This new component lets you share contacts across machines, as well as create a central Address Book without having to have an LDAP server. ZFS: The long rumored addition of Sun's file-system is finally coming to OS X Server. Snow Leopard will be able to both read and write to ZFS volumes. All in all, Snow Leopard Server seems to add quite a few new features. Thanks, Nate.

It is clear that Apple isn't ready to talk too much about the next version of OS X, Snow Leopard, but they are eager to set expectations. In addition to the press release we pointed to earlier today Apple has created a new section on its website explaining the focus of Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard is all about making sure that users have a consistent experience across Apple products. Apple will be adding full Exchange support in Mail, Address Book, and iCal because it is in the iPhone. Apple is working on shrinking the amount of hard drive space OS X requires, no doubt because they figured out how to make OS X much smaller to run on the Apple TV and the iPhone. We'll also be seeing a new version of QuickTime, QuickTime X which will support 'all modern codecs.'There isn't a ton of information on the site, but there is enough to leave you wanting more.

  • MobileMe requires OS X 10.5.4?

TUAW reader Lee Car noticed something odd whilst reading the Terms and Conditions of MobileMe (I'm impressed that anyone actually reads that stuff). The official System Requirements of MobileMe say that you need 'Mac OS X v10.4.11 or latest version of Mac OS X Leopard,' which isn't all that newsy worthy. However, as you can see above, the MobileMe Terms of Service lists Mac OS X v10.4.11, v10.5.4, or later. Very interesting, huh? This leads me to believe that around the time MobileMe launches ( July 11) we'll see 10.5.4.Update: Cory reminds me that one of our tipsters told us to expect OS X 10.5.4 during the second week of June. Looks pretty likely to me.

View Larger Map During this afternoon's WWDC madness, international Apple fans were treated to some great news on the iPhone front: the iPhone 3G will be available in more than 70 countries. While 22 countries will see the phone launch on July 11, 2008, the phone will be hitting other parts of the world as well. Apple wasn't kidding about making the international presence of the iPhone known, from Madagascar to Mali, Chile to Croatia, the iPhone 3G is coming. You can see the complete list of countries here, but I went ahead and put together a little Google map representing as many of the countries as I could find/fit.

  • iPhone 3G from AT&T: unlimited data for $30

    by

    06.09.2008

We still don't have a clear answer from AT&T on whether messaging is included, but if not, the data pricing of $30 per month for unlimited 3G when tied to the iPhone 3G represents a $10 bump from what folks were paying for the 2.5G model. Business owners -- presumably expected to consume considerably more bits over the course of a month -- will be paying $45. Meanwhile, voice plan pricing will start from $39.95, and we're told more details will be available on exactly how it all breaks down when the device actually goes on sale.

  • If it looks like a DS and plays like a DS

... then it must be a DS, right?Wrong. We've been buzzing about the App Store lately, which will allow iPhone and iPod Touch users to download games onto their devices. A few titles and prices have been announced today at Apple's WWDC '08, including Super Monkey Ball, Enigmo, and Cro-Mag Rally, each of which will cost $9.99. All this talk about gaming on the iPod caused us to run across the iControlPad, which is an add-on for the iPhone that provides button and D-pad support. It makes the mobile look a little familiar, doesn't it -- perhaps like another handheld we know? Or maybe it even resembles a DS/PSP hybrid. The iControlPad is still in production (aiming for a July release), but development kits are being given to developers interested in adding support for the peripheral to their games. With the iControlPad, not only will the iPhone utilize touchscreen play like the DS, but users could also play games with buttons ... like, uh, the DS. Don't get us wrong -- we still don't think Apple can compete with the dominance of Nintendo's handheld. Yet, it does look like Steve Jobs and co. are really, really trying to get of piece of the handheld gaming pie, doesn't it? With the recently announced $200 3G iPhone, Apple is headed in the right direction. Now, if it wasn't for that silly AT&T tie-in plan, they might have a major threat on their hands.[Via Gaming Angels]

The WWDC keynote is still ongoing, but one tidbit that we have to bring you immediately: we have a launch date for the iPhone 2.0 firmware and the iTunes App Store, "early July." iPhone users get the upgrade free of charge, and iPod touch users can download it for a $9.95 charge. Applications under 10 MB can be downloaded over the cellular network, and larger apps can be delivered over WiFi or via an iTunes sync.Enterprise users can deliver apps directly to their users, and there's also an 'ad-hoc' delivery method for up to 100 iPhones.More in the liveblog, and in the feature page...

  • eBay, TypePad, others showcase iPhone apps at WWDC

    06.09.2008

Now that developers have had a fair crack at the iPhone SDK for a few months, plenty of companies were ready today to showcase their wares alongside Stevie. Among them: eBay. Pretty much everything you'd need to do from a desktop browser can be done through eBay's iPhone app: bidding, searching for items, My eBay (so you can see how the sale of your old iPhone's going), watching items, and the like. It's free, but since you're giving eBay money every time you make a transaction, we'd expect it to be. Loopt. Already a staple on a couple carriers, Loopt's location-based services allow friends to keep tabs on one another. It'll be free at the launch of the App Store. TypePad. Following some of Six Apart's other moblogging efforts, the iPhone version of its TypePad client will allow realtime uploading of photos taken with the iPhone's cam. It'll also be free. Associated Press. It seems the AP wants to turn us all into unpaid correspondents, offering an app that will allow users to upload footage. Band. A collection of virtual instruments for creating music from scratch right on the iPhone. Probably not the most effective platform for creating songs if we had to guess, but hey, cool nonetheless! MLB.com. Video baseball highlights, real-times stats and scores.

%Gallery-24654% On WWDC Eve, we at TUAW are hard at work keeping an eye out for the unknown and unexpected. We just received a tip showing what appears to be the Mac Nano computer that we've all wanted -- and it looks to be aimed towards the developer crowd. The pictures appear to show a Mac geared towards developers on Windows and Linux systems. "Leave Windows behind. Build your Apps for OS X" states the title. While we are extremely cautious about rumors like these right before WWDC, we did have a rumor that a "new Mac" or at least an updated Mac might be released. Thanks Jackie!

Last week's talkcast included some great WWDC preview discussion with developers Kai Cherry and Todd Ditchendorf along with an expanded panel. Apologies for the scratchy audio (we had to use the Talkshoe low-bandwidth recording instead of the local Skype copy). Download the show from Talkshoe, play it from the Flash player in the continuation of this post, if you like, or pick it up on iTunes. Join us again later tonight, Sunday June 8 at 10 pm ET for more WWDC conversation -- let us know what you want to hear about and which developers you want us to interview, and our man on the ground in San Francisco will try to track them down. Time and personnel permitting, we'll be back on the air Monday night with another show; keep an eye on the TalkShoe page and our Twitter feed for scheduling.

With WWDC right around the corner, the bloggers at TUAW have compiled a list of predictions for WWDC '08. While we are not sure what will be released, this is a fun list of what we think might be coming, or things that we really want. Be sure to voice your predictions in the comments, and by taking part in our poll. Steve SandeI'll take ".Mac rebranding and expansion to iPhone and Windows, 3G iPhone, iTablet, and Mac nano" for $500, Alex!Robert PalmerI think we might find out what the next "big cat name" will be for 10.6. [We're pretty sure we know what that'll be.] I think we'll start to see a development toolset for bringing all of Apple's devices together. Imagine a novice user being able to create a small app that runs on the iPhone, as a Dashboard widget, and maybe as a widget for some future Apple TV in one build. To do that, we need the next generation of Apple development tools. That's what we might begin to see at WWDC. Joshua EllisFlash on the iPhone, 3G, and I'd really love to see that iTablet and Mac nano action.Mike SchrammWe'll see 3G and new .Mac for sure, and I think we'll see some more official iPhone apps from Apple, in addition to everything else from the App Store. I don't think we'll see any other new hardware (a redesigned MBP may be in the cards, but an iTablet or Mac Nano is a no), but I do think we'll see a years-off glimpse of 10.6 -- with Leopard out and updated, Apple needs to start up some more OS hype.Chris UllrichiPhone 2.0 with 3G and video shooting capability. .Mac rebranding with new features similar to Google Apps and accessability to Windows users. iPhone 2.0 applications and some details on the next version of OSX code named "insert name of big cat here."Cory BohonWe'll definitely see some .Mac rebranding going on, some new "mystery hardware," and a sneak peak at what's beneath the hood of Mac OS X 10.6. I don't think we will see the iPhone 2.0 firmware hitting the streets just yet, and I think that Mac OS X 10.5.4 might be right around the corner.Brett TerpstraEnterprise solutions on the iPhone (I know, generic prediction). MBP update. Announcement that Apple was actually serious about using me.com, followed by a Keynote presentation with focus group study data indicating that it's actually a really, really good name.Michael RoseCan't wait for the over-the-air sync of .Mac/MobileMe, and I don't even own an iPhone! I think we'll get a launch date for the App Store and an on-sale date for iPhone 2, but neither of them will be during the show. I think we'll see a 10.6 seed preview and the Mac Nano... and maybe, just maybe, the iPhoneBig.Scott McNultyI'm with the crowd on the .Mac rebranding, and the 10.6 dog and pony show. We'll see (I think) iPhone 2.0, but what I'm really hoping for is a redesigned MacBook Pro. I'm about ready to replace mine, and I'd love to get one with a keyboard like the MacBook's.Now, it's your turn.%Poll-15011%

  • Pre-WWDC iPhone rumor roundup: AT&T out of stock, subsidized pricing, last minute size changes

    06.05.2008

As we inch towards the towering precipice of WWDC 2008, rumors swirling around Apple's next iteration of the iPhone are being deposited onto the interblogs at an alarming rate. The latest set comes in three distinct flavors, the first of which recalls an earlier story that telcos would be offering subsidies for long-term contract signers. According to separate sources, Spain's Telefonica and the UK's O2 would offer the 3G iPhone at discounted rates (as low as €100) for those willing to put pen to paper, while some are claiming that O2 might also offer a "free" upgrade to the new phone for existing users. In other pot-stirring news, iDealsChina is reporting that the phone will suddenly be 2.0mm shorter and 0.5mm thinner than previously spec'd by Griffin in its new casing molds, thus causing all kinds of trouble for the accessory-maker... and people with big hands. Finally, we can safely report that AT&T has run out of stock of the device online (finally joining Apple). The site claims it's a "temporary" situation -- one which we suspect will be rectified by the appearance of a new model.
