Can't help but chuckle at Dell's semi-admirable attempts at "community involvement" in product design decisions. To its credit, Dell does seem to be listening up on the Linux issue -- though we have to wait and see how well the execution goes -- but this latest "You Choose" question posed to the Dell IdeaStorm community isn't exactly going to change the world. Dell wants your vote on two different clear sidepanel designs for its XPS 710 H2C desktop which was unveiled at CES. Sounds like a good idea, unfortunately, the options are laughable: you can vote for a decent but perhaps over the top "X" design, or a square window that was clearly drummed up after the marketing team decided it'd be a good thing to "ask the community" in an attempt to generate interest. In the end, it's all pretty silly -- don't they know that what the people really want is to pay double the price for a gaming desktop with pretty pictures on it?[Via Geekzone]

  • Dell busts out XPS 710 H2C gaming desktop, holds no punches

Dell's new XPS 710 H2C Edition "Black Ice" gaming PC might look sexy on the outside, with that new "midnight-black" casing, but there's a whole lot more going on the inside to get excited about. At $5,499, the box is no steal, but it's plenty of frills, including Dell's new H2C cooling system we heard about earlier, which works a bit like a car radiator, with a fluid chiller with ceramic-based thermoelectric cooling to keep it all frosty. Dell also squeezed in an Intel Core Extreme QX6700 quad-core processor, which is factory overclocked to 3.2GHz, dual NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX graphics cards, 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 memory, a pair of 160GB 10,000rpm HDDs with room for two more, dual optical drive (Blu-ray was mentioned in the keynote, but it doesn't sound like it made it into the base configuration), plus Dell is tossing in a 2007WFP 20-inch display and Dell AS501 flat-panel speakers. Since this is a whole gaming package -- apparently consumers go for that whole bundle thing -- Dell is including a Razer Tarantula keyboard and Razer Copperhead mouse. No mention of Vista, though: it's XP Media Center 2005 all the way here. Should be shipping now.

So Dell picked the rather unfortunate time of 9:00am for its keynote here at CES, so we've got a feeling a few eyeballs might be distracted while it announces displays, SideShow device and whatever else Dell might have up its sleeve. However, it does look like Dell has finally wised up to all its display leaks over the past week or so, and shared a few specs with us to chew on while we wait for the keynote to begin. Most notably, it looks like that 2707WFP Dell UltraSharp 27-inch LCD will feature a 1920 x 1200 resolution, 1,000:1 contrast ratio and 6ms response time. With Dell's TrueColor technology the display can pull off 92% of the NTSC color space -- a "first" for the 27-inch display, though there really isn't much competition to speak of. Dell is also breaking out its E228WFP 22-incher, along with the XPS 710 H2C supa' PC.
