Early last year, we polled the grand audience and found out just what you liked (and disliked) about Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 for PS3. Fast forward 13 months, and those still waiting on the sidelines have yet another option for jumping in. As of now, Terra Soft Solutions is offering up Sony's 80GB PlayStation 3 with YDL 6.0 pre-installed for $549.95, and yes, that includes the DVDs containing the OS. Interestingly, it seems as if you'll still have to pony up for a component or HDMI cable, but at least the option's there, right?[Thanks, Fiddlesworth]

  • Mercury Computer Systems looses MultiCore Plus SDK for PS3

Those looking to squeeze a bit more utility out of their PS3 need look no further than Mercury Computer Systems, which has just released its MultiCore Plus SDK for Sony's latest console. The kit aims to enable application developers to harness the power of the Cell (relatively) inexpensively, and the firm is marketing the product to research labs, universities, and other businesses that delve into electronic data automation, video compression, and biotechnology. Apparently, the software was designed to work hand-in-hand with Terra Soft's Yellow Dog Linux operating system, and it can be snapped up now for slightly less than a PS3 itself (in other words, $399 per seat).[Via TGDaily]

While we're sure a number of you have a Yellow Dog Linux-equipped PS3 around for leisure's sake, Axion Racing is using a similar setup to "manage one of seven autonomous vehicle cameras." The San Diego-based team is reportedly eager to show onlookers "things [other than gaming and Blu-ray playing] that can be done using a PlayStation console," and expects the device to mesh well with its array of Dell computers, SICK laser finders, Bumblebee stereo cameras, and FLIR infrared cameras." Of course, who knows what could happen if a stray android climbs on board and fires up a round of MotorStorm while it's trying to concentrate.

HELIOS is offering PS3 owners a test server that runs on a simplified version of Yellow Dog Linux. The OS arrives via CD disk image and installs in about six minutes. Terra Soft Solutions, the brains behind Yellow Dog Linux, agreed to allow Helios to distribute this "lite" version, catering specifically to the PS3 crowd through its Cell optimization. HELIOS, being no stranger to server development, says this modified Linux test-drive server will offer full DHCP network settings, support for Java 1.5 and AppleTalk enhanced kernel. Interested parties should head to the HELIOS website here, which provides detailed instructions on how to download the client and set it up. Let the game hosting officially begin![Via GamesGalore]

  • Yellow Dog Linux now supports wi-fi on the PS3

Woot! Finally! Terrasoft announced this week that they've released a new version of Yellow Dog Linux for the PS3, and this version includes support for wi-fi and fixes some USB printer issues. I'm pretty stoked about this; the lack of wi-fi support is why I wiped the Linux partition off my PS3. Now that I don't have to string a 40' Cat 5 cable across my apartment, I may have to try YDL out again.Any other Linux PS3 guys out there?

  • Ubuntu, Yellow Dog Linux for PPC updated

Dust off those old iBooks and Powerbooks and give them new life with Linux. Earlier this week, Ubuntu released version 7.04 of their desktop and server distribution, called "Feisty Fawn." While version 6 was the last officially supported version of Ubuntu for PPC, there is a community-supported PPC version of Feisty Fawn that you can download here. Ubuntu is a free (as in speech and beer) download. Also, Yellow Dog Linux version 5.0.1 for PPC was made available in the Terra Soft store earlier this month, and the download mirrors will be availabe in a few weeks. For now, you can purchase YDL from Terra Soft in one of two bundles, priced at $99.95 and $49.95 respectively.[Via MacSlash]

  • Make Bill happy, run Windows on your PlayStation 3

Don't mind Bill's trash talk about the Cell processor; surely he would approve of you running Windows on it! Well, not exactly directly on the Cell processor ... rather through the QEMU virtualization software running in Yellow Dog Linux on the PlayStation 3, as shown at the PlayStation.com forums. Thanks to the ability to install alternative operating systems, curious (and masochistic) gamers can load up all sorts of crazy things on their PS3s. We'd like to see someone load up Windows Media Center and use it to stream video from their PS3 to their Xbox 360. Or maybe, install that x86 build of Mac OS X in QEMU under Linux, then run Windows XP via Parallels under that, and then run VMWare running Linux under that. And then get the hell out of there before your PS3 implodes.[Thanks, Xenokai]

That's right, boys and girls, now you can easily download, burn, rip, install and repeat (or something) your way to a free alternate OS on your PS3. Terra Soft has unleashed a flurry of mirrors for you to use in downloading Yellow Dog Linux for the PS3 -- use them! It's free, after all. You can even grab YDL as a torrent file... my favorite. We'd list how to do this and give you a guide along the adventure, but their site does a decent job of that. Plus, we haven't done it yet. It's on the to-do list today, along with taking a shower and buying groceries. So, if you couldn't tell, there's not much else to distract this good ol' boy from tackling this task. Enough of my blabbering: go here and download, burn, boot, and enjoy your free Yellow Dog Linux.[thanks to everyone who alerted us to this!]

  • Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 to run on Sony's PlayStation 3

Sony's Kutaragi gave the rumor mill plenty of fodder by speculating that multiple operating systems were being mulled over for use in the PlayStation 3, and eventually Sony posted an article confirming its interest in both OS X and Linux options. Now it appears that we just might have a winner. Terra Soft's website proudly displays that the forthcoming version of Yellow Dog Linux "supports the PlayStation 3 console," and leaves hints that we might see a few sweet video demonstrations in the near future. While intricate details about the the OS's compatibility with the sure-to-be-scarce console are still few and far between, we're expecting it to drop "in mid-November" to presumably coincide with the November PS3 launch dates -- but at least pulling strings to get your name on a less-than-assuring pre-order list probably won't be necessary here.[Thanks, Clint]

Ah, I can remember that day when I first loaded Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) 3.0 onto one of my old Mac 4400's (a dull box of a machine if there ever was one). KDE was poky and my single button ADB mouse made things less than fun, but there it was, my first foray into Linux. Now Terra Soft announces the availability of Yellow Dog Linux 4.1. Changes in this release include: Support for backlit keys (cool) Support for Atheros wi-fi cards USB device auto-mount under both KDE & GNOME Support for the latest Apple PowerBooksAlso, the kernel has been updated to version 2.6.15-rc5 and basic 64-bit development and runtime support has been added. Check it out if you've got an older Mac sitting around (get a full list of officially supported machines here). YDL is available in three retail versions: A box set with installation support will run you $89.95US (This also includes a book, Frisbee and a sticker), the same box with no support is $59.95US and the "geek edition" (no manual, no support, CDs only) is $29.95US.
