Firmware updates that improve performance while also boosting battery life? Love 'em. Firmware updates that nickle and dime you for things like new fonts? Hate 'em. So, mixed feelings then on news that Samsung's YP-R1 media player is getting an update that will make the thing more snappy and more longevous, as shown in the video demonstration after the break. That the company will start charging for things like themes and new text styles, however, seems a bit unfortunate. Also on the for-pay list will be downloadable games, the first of which, Touch & Number, will sell for 2,000 won (about $1.75). It's no Crash Bandicoot, but sounds just as fun -- right?

Continue reading Samsung's YP-R1 gets firmware update, some of it will cost ya (video)

Samsung's YP-R1 gets firmware update, some of it will cost ya (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 04 Jan 2010 15:58:00 EST. It ain't the first time we've seen a gizmo take a backwards approach to launch, and we get the feeling it won't be the last. After leaking out, getting reviewed and hitting the all-revealing FCC, Samsung's mildly exciting YP-R1 portable media player is finally an official product in the megacorp's product line. Expected to debut at IFA here in just a few days, the 8.9 millimeter-thin player will boast DivX compatibility, a 2.6-inch touchscreen, TouchWiz interface and a Beat DJ feature that enables owners to add in their own crackly voice and space-themed sound effects to songs. We don't expect the $180 starting price to budge much, though exact pricing details should be uncovered in Berlin within the next few days. As for shipping dates? It'll march out next month in Europe, with "other markets including Russia, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan to follow."
Continue reading Samsung's YP-R1 now really official, ships next month

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

Samsung's YP-R1 now really official, ships next month originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 09:02:00 EST. You should already be familiar with (or able to guess) the YP-R1's specs and pricing, so we'll just head straight to the good stuff. Our colleagues at MovePlayer handled a pink sample of the device and liked its 720 x 480 uncompressed video playback, slim casing, DJ utility (your use of which will be inversely proportional to your age), and the host of extra features like FM radio, voice recording and photo organizer. Their one major gripe related to scrolling around in landscape mode, but all in all they found it a very competent, sophisticated-looking entry into the PMP market.

It's unfortunately not the (presumably) Tegra-based YP-M1 that Samsung has just debuted in South Korea, but the company's YP-R1 player still isn't too shabby as far as basic PMPs go, and it's now finally popped up at the FCC. While still far from a guarantee, that would seem to signal that US release could be coming sooner rather than later, and hopefully means that it's bigger brother, the M1, will also be following suit. In case you missed it, the YP-R1 is a touchscreen-based player with a 2.7-inch display, and packs 8GB to 32GB of flash storage, built-in Bluetooth, TV-out, support for most of the major audio / video formats, and even a few games for good measure. Still curious for more? You can get a glimpse of the manual, some internal shots, and some always-riveting test reports at the link below.

We like bubble-gum icons and ginger bread men holding "Touch Me!" signs as much as any predator. It's just not the first motif that comes to mind when choosing an interface for what otherwise looks to be yet another mainstream digital media player. Perhaps Samsung's YP-R1 is targeting 9-year old Korean girls -- however, that sure looks like a brushed metal box to us, not teddy-bear taffeta affixed to a Mickey Mouse effigy as we'd expect. Otherwise, the YP-R1 is the same 2.6-inch touchscreen 400 x 260 pixel player with up to 32GB (€149 for 8GB model) of storage we've already seen only now with an expected September ship date, at least in France. One more shot after the break. What can we say -- this is what you get when we hope to be surprised.
Continue reading Samsung's YP-R1 spotted in the wild leering at kids

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

Samsung's YP-R1 spotted in the wild leering at kids originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 10 Jul 2009 03:26:00 EST. After catching wind of this upcoming YP-R1 from Samsung, the fine folks at DAP Review did a bit of sleuthing to pair up the specs with a photo, and it's all pretty traditional: 8GB of flash storage, a 2.7-inch 400 x 240 touchscreen display, a good amount of video and audio codecs, TV-out, Bluetooth, FM, e-book reader and even some games. Supposedly it'll be out in the UK on July 30th for £109.99 (about $181 US). Like we said, pretty standard stuff, but who knows, maybe Samsung will surprise us all with a new UI theme or something.
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

Samsung's upcoming YP-R1 uncovered, just barely worth the effort originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 13 Jun 2009 20:31:00 EST.
