RIM has long been married to the old hardware-is-paramount ethos that relegated Apple to a niche player in the broader PC market. Announcements like these signal that it is finally chiming into the reality that the license is the key to exponential market penetration. Selling boxes is so 1980s.

I just rid of an ipaq because the god damn thing did not work. Wi-fi doesn't work. Bluetooth doesn't work. The software sucks. The hardware sucks.

I don't hear too many crackberry enthusiasts saying that they have to reboot the device very often. I rebooted my ipaq all the time, sometimes I had to do a hard reboot!

The reason that Apple is successful (to the extent that it is) is exactly because they control the hardware. That is the only way to ensure that the fucking stuff WORKS. (not that I own a Mac, and not that my PC gives me trouble in any way. If only WM was as good as XP).

Wi-fi is what usually crashed the thing, although it crashed for other reasons as well.

The last straw for me was while driving, trying to bluetooth a phone number to my cell. The thing would not connect with the cell, and then it knocked my bluetooth headset out! I had to dial manually and talk on the phone.

I don't doubt that people who don't use wi-fi or bluetooth on their PPCs don't have trouble with it. But if you do use those features, which are advanced features similar to what will be needed for crackberry on WM, you know what a POS it is.

I can't comment on the crackberry interface, other than the fact that I have many crackhead friends. It can't be that bad with so many crackheads out there.

BTW, I replaced the 5450 with a Palm Zire 31. I'm not exactly happy with Zire either. The biggest problem I have with my iPaq (2210) is the way it loses if you let the battery run down, plus the battery doesn't last that long. Then there's the keyboard you need to carry around if you want to do any real typing... now I've got the Blackberry, I don't use it any more.

Here in the UK, on most phone contracts we'll pay about 17 cents to send a SMS.
