My XV6700 when tethered is charging which is what I need,as opposed to BT, however the screen stays on, "lit up", and I don't want it to "burn in" on the screen. When I turn off the screen (top button) it disconnects my laptop from the internet. Is there a way to shut down the lit up screen and not loose the connection? Love the product. fin

finbob

Comments on How-To: Use your EV-DO Pocket PC phone for internet access

very nice...now can you do on for Macs + the Cingular 8125 (or any EDGE phone i guess)

thanks!

Scott

Comments on How-To: Use your EV-DO Pocket PC phone for internet access

WOW - Verizon SUCKS!!!

You do know that this is all BUILT-IN to the Sprint version of the phone and requires nothing else than putting the phone into Modem mode from the menu. This should work with any pocket PC cell phone. It doesn't matter if it has EVDO, or if EVDO is available in your area. You don't "have" to pay for the tethering but according to your contract, your not allowed to stream data or download files from your PDA. They have no way to track it except to realize you've used 1Gig of wireless data for the month. If your not paying for the tethering and you get caught, Verizon WILL lock out your service and disconnect your phone. I, somehow, use around 2Gig per month every month and have never recieved a letter, but I know plenty who have been caught. (They probably called customer service asking about it because they were told they didn't have to pay for it.) Sprint is easer, but at what expense? Verizon 120kbps - 2.1 Mbps.... Sprint 220kbps - 720kbps. Why is Verizon's slowest slower? Because in areas where EVDO is not available it is backwards compatible to 1xrtt. Why is Verizon's fastest faster? Because Verizon freakin kicks but in speed and coverage. You can't stream Sprint going from Main to Florida on 95 and not loose connection for hours at a time. Verizon is almost perfect. Availability and reliability.

bgoeller

Comments on How-To: Use your EV-DO Pocket PC phone for internet access

How EXACTLY do I get tethering on Verizon with my Moto Q and Macbook Pro OS X ? Set up your verizon account to dial in, and voila!

http://www.slashphone.com/7/2248.html for instructions.

jadmiral

Comments on How-To: Use your EV-DO Pocket PC phone for internet access

yeah, i wish i still had my e815 so i could use evdo(dropped my e815 one too many times, and they didnt have any e815s in stock), now i have to use 1x on my lg 8300

Naveed

Comments on How-To: Use your EV-DO Pocket PC phone for internet access

Don't suppose anyone has been able to get a Chocolate phone working as an EV-DO modem on OS X?

Trent L

Comments on How-To: Use your EV-DO Pocket PC phone for internet access

I have been using a program called pdanet on my sprint 6700 -it should work with verizons version too and with it, the data looks like it is just being used on the phone itself so no additional charges. it is like 20 or 30 bucks but it is very easy and dependable

Matt The Geek

Comments on How-To: Use your EV-DO Pocket PC phone for internet access

can you do this with a treo 700w? and do u have to pay everytime u go online? or does it come off ur unlimited data plan?? oo this interesting!

Dan Lee

Comments on How-To: Use your EV-DO Pocket PC phone for internet access

You can use bluetooth to do the exact sam thing without any wires. Excellent instructions. Be sure you run the latest upgrade from utstar.com (APAC_VZW_20720_200_11000_Ship.exe) then place the
CDMA USB Modem Dialer.exe
and
CDMA USB Modem.inf
files on your PC and following the instructions in the related .DOC

I think VZW, either willfully or by simple disorganization, does not have its act together in this matter. I've been told in no uncertain terms that the XV6700, like the Treo 700w, is not supported for use as a modem. I've also heard from 2 Level 3 techs, one gave me his name, saying that this activity is not SUPPORTED but it is PERMITTED. It's all a matter of whether you add a 3rd party application (which is considered skirting the Terms of Service) or whether you use what comes with the product.

In other words, you can't expect to ask VZW for help with this procedure on the 6700 but you won't get "in trouble" (whatever they might do to you is not clear to me) for doing this as you WOULD if you used PDAnet on your Treo 700w.

The 2nd tech told me I don't even need to pay the $15 addition to the $45/mo data fee ("PDA/Smartphone Unlimited $44.99"). FWIW, when arguing with them about why they won't allow a 700w to "tether", I offered to pay them the extra $15 a month but they pointed out that they had no way to bill me for it.

IMPORTANT: I haven't read the ToS myself. This is all as per two techs and no customer support people. I might be "in trouble". I might be told by the Data Police that the Level 3 techs were wrong and I must shut down my "tethering". So, do your own due diligence but use what info I offer here as a starting point.

It sure is silly for VZW to not take the $15 most of us are willing to hand them so that, when added to the PDA Data plan, they get the same $60/mo they'd get if we bought a cardbus EVDO card plan instead. It's almost-free money for them but the 700w, for some reason isn't supported and the info on the 6700 is totally confused even among their own people.

Different topic: I agree in essence with those who say "Why use BT to "tether" when it's slower than most EVDO connections you'll get (I was getting 500 x 125 in ABQ this weekend in the car), But sometimes an easy, quick, connection at a couple-hundred-k is all you need for a simple email check or to look up an address. Beats dragging out the USB cable.

IMHO,

Phil

Phil W
