A great UI and the iPhones other cool features are nice-to-haves. The ability to make voice and data calls on a wide variety of networks (includes UMTS/3G) is far more important to me and no doubt to many high-end users. How many of those 80% are still prepared to switch now?
I switched from a HTC Tytn (at&t) 8525 that of course has 3G. Because the wifi actually seeks out networks and doesn't drain the battery like the Tytn does and the fact the HSDPA network in Chicagoland kinda hoovers, I don't miss it. Edge on the iPhone *feels* almost as fast as 3G on the Tytn most of the time. The rest of the iPhone is worlds ahead of the WM5 devices, its not even funny.
My TyTN was an absolute lifesaver when I was on holiday in Japan. Their network is UMTS/3G only and you can't buy even a pay-as-you-go unless you are permenantly resident in the country.
Free and hotspot WiFi is very uncommon outside of some large city spots and EDGE doesn't seem to fare much better across Europe.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
