Taxes pay for them, and we can use the streets all we like. If a private company built roads, you'd pay a toll to get on, toll to get off. There'd be one road, if you're lucky, to any particular destination, graded with gravel and your speed limited to that which best fits their business need never to repave. New roads would only be built if they could jack up the rates and call it a premium road service access package -- aren't you lucky they're building new RoadsPlus in your neighborhood maybe next year? The companies would merge, and thus present a solid, remorseless face to the customer. They'd argue that restrictions on travel were necessary because they need to make a profit for their shareholders -- what are you, a commie? Want your road privileges revoked, Chairman Mao? And Congresscritters and the business-friendly admin's regulators would simply fail to care what your problem with the service is. Don't like it? Switch road companies. But you bleat as they hang up on you: There aren't any other companies, and roads are practically free and speed limits high in Europe! *click*

catbeller

Comments on

I kinda like how verizon doesnt even pretend like it likes the consumer. I think all phone companies are a pain to deal with but having had them all, verizon is far and away the most rude and obvious about it. Hell they even changed the decor of a store here in town from bright and air to corporate and grey by covering all the windows and making it look like the store room at circuit city. Its like they WANT you to see them as ominous and unkind. They always give me a chuckle.

Sam

Comments on

I live in Buffalo, NY. If they just said "for 30 bucks you can get 5GB over wireless per month", I'm sure plenty of folks would sign up. The problem is that most of their customers (the kind who don't read Engadget) have no idea what "5GB" means, so they'd get worried that they might use more (in the process of checking their email and reading CNN.com), then look at the next "tier" of data, which would maybe be 5 or 10 bucks extra, and think that was overpriced, and give up on the idea altogether. I'm not sure that's actually what would happen, but I can imagine that being of concern to their market-droids.

I think that what they're doing now is probably about the best solution -- just sell "Wireless Mobile Broadband*", and have the caveat that if you go over some fairly high limit, you pay a smallish rate per GB. Most people will just read the headline, and be OK with the cap. Some people will read the fine print, and sign up anyway, figuring it's worth the extra if they go over. There will still be some people who don't read the fine print, and get pissed when they're throttled down, but as long as it's laid out ahead of time, it's their own damn fault for not reading it.

James

Comments on

1.
