Thought that said it would be stupid from Nokia and others(maybe even more Motorola) to put some big guns to the field. In the US, virtually every phone is tied to a specific carrier, either through SIM locking or through incompatible networks. It is rare to find a phone not slapped with the labels of a carrier. In fact most phones don't even show the labels of the original manufacturer, they have been rebranded as the carrier's model.

It is refreshing to see Vodafone fighting phone exclusivity in Europe. Although this is a far cry from the conventional practices of the behavior of US carriers, one can only hope that sooner or later US customers and regulatory bodies will wake up to the atrocities of the exclusivity and profit-sharing carrier/manufacturer business models and do something about this mess. For now, it is simply nice to see that somewhere in the world, justice is being done.

AlexL

Comments on Vodafone Germany obtains restraining order against T-Mobile iPhone sales

Sorry, but that rant of Vodafone is bullshit! I find it awkward on how Vodafone who owns 45% of Verizon wireless lost the iphone contract to rival AT&T. Now they lost their bid for the Iphone in Europe. This is just retaliation for not winning the contract from apple nothing more nothing less. There is plenty of mandatory contracts Vodafone has to offer not only exclusive phones for their contracts but also software aggreements as well.

Also there is another reason they say they will not pursue the same injuction in other EU contries isn't because they wouldnt LIKE Dto. It's due to the fact other EU countries would make the same ruling in favor of Vodafone.

Now i have somethign to say for NIKSTER.... I'm sure when it comes to mobile phones "WE"(as in the United States) are on another planet, but let me let you know how when it comes to business and profit it is YOU who are somewhere else.

Sure you could sale unlcoked phones and probably make a good deal of revenue. BUT this is whats going on. When they made a contract with a carrier Apple has secured not only the amount of the phone itself but also half of the price plans paid to the carrier. That is to say they make $430 dollars on the phone and if a person is paying for a $75 a month plan thats $37.50 a month for 2 years which is a a total of $1,330 apple is making off of one phone sold.

Do you see the difference in this business model?? It's very brilliant because they are making money over a course of 2 years for just 1 product and it will keep paying them for the duration of the contract. You would not be able to make the extra $900 if the phone was usable on another network and was sold that way.

So you see where the money is coming from and why apple has chosen that route. Apple whas 2 years for the need to develop a bigger and better product unlike most cell phone's where it's a rush. They are making their money.

Dsherman

Comments on Vodafone Germany obtains restraining order against T-Mobile iPhone sales

To be clear, Verizon lost nothing because it cannot support the iPhone.
