JVC touts first single-sided, dual-layer DVD-RW disc

JVC has just announced that they've created the world's first single-sided, dual-layer DVD-RW disc, pushing storage to a cool 8.5GB. The people behind the rival DVD+RW standard have long said they were capable of producing dual-layer discs, but there's still no indication of when dual-layer DVD+RW discs and drives might materialize. Not that things look much more hopeful on JVC's end either — they're still a ways off from perfecting the product and they'll need to get approval for the new standard from the DVD Forum before any dual-layer DVD-RW discs and drives can be sold.
