New LCD plant in China

LCD TV

Looks like China wants in on the growing LCD market too, as a third company is building a manufacturing plant. Longtech will run the new venture, which will be strategically located near Shanghai in the town of Kunshan. A $600 million investment kick-started the LCD plant which is designed to manufacture 90,000 LCD panels per month initially.

The starting investment sounds a little on the light side, considering a Chinese Economic official stated that in the future, the plant will require an additional $5 billion to $6 billion investment. Starting a manufacturing plant with only a 10% investment is rather impressive, not to mention challenging. We'll have to watch and see if production begins before 2006 as planned.
