Sony swallows SOCOM, acquires Zipper Interactive

Sony's uber-popular online shooter, SOCOM: US Navy Seals, will forever stay Sony's child. Today it was announced that the company helmed by Howard Stringer has acquired Zipper Interactive, developers of the SOCOM franchise, thus securing exclusive rights to the game until armageddon.

SOCOM has been an integral piece to Sony's online success, and enjoys a rabid fan-base (such as my roommate, but that's another story) - perchance some of the developers might become key players in the building of an online infrastructure to compete with Xbox Live?
