Sony's Blu-ray player thrice delayed

Sony has delayed its standalone Blu-ray player until October. Initially, it was supposed to be released in May, then pushed back until July, then until August. Now, it appears the perpetually pushed back player may be launched at or near the PlayStation 3 launch.

So here's the question: why bother releasing the player at all? Sony's Blu-ray player, the BDP-S1, is listed at variousoutlets at just under $1,000. If consumers are given the option, the PlayStation 3 will look like an incredible bargain. Could the player be nothing more than a ploy to make its game console look more attractive? After all the videophiles pick up the PS3, perchance they will try a few games out, thus adding more customers into the industry.

Maybe it's the tinfoil hat talking, but we do not see how Sony plans to use the BDP-S1 except as a foil to sell its game console entertainment system.
