Ultima Online's Stygian Abyss expansion site goes live
Mythic passed on word that Ultima Online, the game a lot of folks think of as the grandaddy of modern MMOs, is getting a new expansion. Alongside games like Meridian 59 and EverQuest, UO launched the US fascination with massively multiplayer games, as well as the careers of several of the country's biggest online designers. The expansion continues that fascination with the realm of Lord British in a new content pack called Stygian Abyss.
Stygian Abyss will offer a number of new features and gameplay elements for die-hard UO players. First and foremost is the ability to create a new character of the gargoyle race! The gargoyles have come through a portal in the land of Sosaria, visiting the lands of Britannia from their original home on the world of Tel Mur. As a gargoyle, players will be able to fly overland and have basic familiarity with missle weapons and Mysticism from the get-go. Other features of the expansion have yet to be fully detailed on the website, but it sounds as though there will be at least one new dungeon, new spells, and new equipment. Mythic Entertainment, an EA studio, today launched the official website for Ultima Online's upcoming Stygian Abyss expansion. By visiting the official site, players can unearth information on the newly-playable Gargoyle race, never-before seen spells, powerful new weapons and armor, an expansive and dangerous dungeon, and a variety of new, tough-as-nails monsters.
An entrance to the Stygian Abyss has been discovered upon the world of Sosaria, hidden in the seething caldera of a newly-risen volcano. At first glance nothing more than a colossal web of dank caverns and oppressive dungeons, it houses an ancient city that acts as a barrier between the worlds of Sosaria and Tel Mur, home to the Gargoyles. Masters of Imbuing and Mysticism, these clawed and winged creatures find themselves facing certain destruction at the hands of the Abyss, forced to delve into the secrets of the lost city and the rift to their sister world...
Released in September 1997, Ultima Online features an epic storyline both magical and fantastic. With devoted followers around the world, it has thrived for over a decade and spawned a number of expansions, making it one of the deepest, largest MMORPGs ever created.
Ultima Online:Stygian Abyss is scheduled to be released in 2009. This expansion is not yet rated.
