DC Universe Online: Launch-day roundup

Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's the launch of DC universe Online! Hopefully, you've already pre-ordered the game and have the loadscreen in front of you right now. If not, perhaps you will soon.

When the game was first announced back in July of 2008, Sony Online Entertainment CEO John Smedley said, "I think for the first time, people are going to feel like there's a superhero game that makes you feel like a superhero." Many fans agree. DCUO is one of the first MMOs to use action-game mechanics; it also boasts physics that allow you to interact with the environment. Its character creation screens allow you to build a character intended to be modified as the game progresses. And most importantly, DCUO is the first MMORPG to be launched for both the PlayStation 3 and the PC at the same time.

After the break, we've rounded up some of the best articles, videos, and images to bring you up to speed for today's launch of the game. Massively is also dedicating two new features to this particular game. On Saturdays, the Alter-Ego column will cover the ins and outs of this explosive title. Then on Wednesdays, Massively TV will host a video livestream of the adventure of our DCUO superhero. The game is breaking new ground in the genre. Trust us when we say that we want to be there for every minute.

The trailers

Gamescom 2010: DC Universe Online trailer impresses
Our friends at Joystiq have the scoop on the latest trailer for DC Universe Online, the forthcoming superhero MMORPG from Sony Online Entertainment. Unlike last month's cinematic story trailer, this one is all gameplay, and it features heavy doses of action (yes, that guy did toss a helicopter on top of a skyscraper), as well as a voice-over narrative that hints at how player characters can co-exist with DC legends while carving out their own niche.

Panels and interviews

NYCC 2010: DCUO's Q&A panel and fan event
Executive Creative Director Jim Lee, Creative Director Chris Cao and Art Director Mark Anderson shared details and fielded dozens of questions about the DC-based MMO at both events. Discussion ranged from costume creation to endgame content to the game's recent delay to early 2011.

Before the fan event got popping, Massively enjoyed the opportunity to sit down with comics legend Jim Lee and DCUO Art Director Mark Anderson.

Exclusive Interview: Terrorizing the Green Lantern with DCUO's RadarX
Community Manager Tony Jones -- or as most players on the DCUO forums may know him, RadarX -- met me on the sprawling streets of Metropolis (home of Superman), where the Sinestro Corps was absolutely convinced the Green Lantern Corps was draining the power of its rings. My tour of the game gave me the chance to ask some questions about what's in store for the community in this exciting game, as well as the chance to beat up some good guys.

Exclusive Interview: DCUO's Game Director Chris Cao
DCUO gives fans of comic books, action video games, and MMOs a reason to come together and celebrate this incredible amalgam of genres. Massively snagged an exclusive interview with DCUO Game Director Chris Cao about this groundbreaking game. Up, up, and away!
