WRUP: Don't mess with Geth Infiltrators edition

Eliot Lefebvre

The above is not my Geth Infiltrator but rather Ms. Lady's Geth Infiltrator, who cuts quite the striking figure with a large sniper rifle and judicious use of special powers. Basically, in this house, when it's not board games or MMOs, it's Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. It's oddly fertile ground for roleplaying, assuming the role you want to play starts and ends at "homicidal robot with a large rifle and no trace of remorse."

Of course, you know at least one thing I'll be playing, but WRUP is not about solely me. No, it's about all of the Massively staff members and what they'll be playing over the weekend. It's also about what MMO features we'd like to see more widely adopted. So check on past the break for our weekend plans, and let us know what you'll be up to in the comments below!

Beau Hindman, F2P and Mobile Columnist
@Beau_Hindman: I'll be switching to Divina for next week's Rise and Shiny. I gotta be honest, it's great to get back to anime MMOs. There's something comforting about it. This one looks fun, and I've been given a high-level character so I can really see some good content. I really need to get to my MUD list since I am going to be covering them throughout July. Don't worry; I'll be covering "normal" MMOs after that.

I wish all MMOs would offer first and last names. I hate it when you have to come up with a single name for your character.

Bree Royce, Managing Editor
@nbrianna: I'm probably going to dip into City of Heroes and Glitch this weekend. And sleep. A lot of sleep.

Bonus question: Sidekicking. Real sidekicking. Both ways, not just down (you know who you are!).

Eliot Lefebvre, Columnist Extraordinaire and Senior Contributing Editor
@Eliot_Lefebvre: There's definitely TERA in the works, and I know I'll be playing through my fourth Mass Effect series playthrough as well as Mass Effect 3's multiplayer. Beyond that, I'm going to be roleplaying in either Final Fantasy XIV or Star Wars: The Old Republic. It should be a restful weekend, and I desperately need one.

A lot of games have some wonderful little incidental features, but I'd say the one I'm happiest to see is the inclusion of character biographies. Being able to learn a little about another person's character at a glance is helpful, and I wish more games integrated this as a default feature.

Elisabeth Cardy, Guild Wars 2 Columnist and Contributing Editor
@elixabethclaire: Guild Wars is a thing I do, and I will continue doing it. I'm nearing the end of my time in Diablo III, so I'll probably be putting the finishing touches on my Barbarian's excellent adventure over the weekend. Oooh ooh ooh, Magic: the Gathering 2013 is out, and that will also be something I do. 2013 sounds like it belongs to the far-flung future, doesn't it?

As far as incidental features go, I'd like every MMO to let me annotate my friend's list, even if it's just in the form of giving someone a nickname. I may not remember who Zeejala Qo Jamex is after a week or so, so "Super awesome smiter" would be a lot more useful.

Jeremy Stratton, Contributing Editor
@Jeremy_Stratton: I'll be on a vacation of sorts over the weekend. No (or very little) gaming for me.

I get the best joy out of questing or drifting off into a corner of a zone and hearing or seeing something that I'd never expect. I've run off the beaten path before to find little swarms of butterflies that weren't anywhere else, yet there they were, out in no-man's-land for few to see.

Justin Olivetti, Columnist Extraordinaire and Senior Contributing Editor
@Sypster: I might -- might -- be rerolling a Rogue in RIFT, which means I'll have to redouble my efforts to get a character expansion-ready. Should be pretty doable, though. And I'll be counting down the days until The Secret World head start!

I wish every MMO would include cosmetic outfits. I know a lot do, but all should. It's just so important with how players bond visually with their characters.

Matt Daniel, Contributing Editor
@mvmatt: This weekend a good friend of mine is back in town, so I'll probably be skipping the gaming in favor of social outings and whatnot, but if I do get any gaming time, it's going to be split between Dark Souls (I want my Dark Soul achievement!), TERA, FFXIV, and maybe some World of Warcraft. Who knows? I'm sure alcohol-fueled Halo matches will make up a good part of my weekend as well.

As for an incidental system that I'd want all games to adopt... Hrm. Star Wars Galaxies' crafting/market system. By a long-shot. Though I wouldn't complain about something more Vanguard-esque either. That game's crafting system was one of the most fun I've seen in an MMO.

MJ Guthrie, Aion and Sandbox Columnist and Contributing Editor
This weekend has some major family milestones, so I will probably be away from gaming for the most part. I am trying to resist The Secret World so I can play fresh when it's for real. I do need to start leveling a bit more in Aion; I've been a bit stagnant in that area, so I will head there if I get some extra hours.

Just one? So not fair! I have like four that all vie for top honors. Hmm, I think for today... I will say shinies! Little random treasures scattered about that you collect. I'd really love if more games had these.

Patrick Mackey, League of Legends Columnist
@mackeypb: I'll be playing more League of Legends, assuming the servers are actually up this weekend. I've been playing quite a few games with quite a few personalities in the LoL YouTube community, and they mostly play classic, so I've had to brush off the dust on those rusty, archaic skills. Most of my friends ask "How are you level 30 when you only have 37 wins?" I can respond in one word: Dominion.

I wish all MMOs had out-of-game chat and email integration, ideally a chat client I could hook into with Pidgin or some other instant messaging service.

Terilynn Shull, Star Trek Online Columnist
@terilynns: This weekend will be spent on cleaning the house. We have company from Norway swinging through, and the house is a disaster; the washer is broken and the kitchen faucet just gave out! If there's any time for games, it will be to jump into Star Trek Online to say hello to the fleeties and maybe make a batch of supreme eggs and onions in Lord of the Rings Online.

Crafting. Real crafting. I like feeling useful to my fleetmates/guildmates, and I would like to be a tailor or something like that. I never got to play Star Wars Galaxies, but everyone I've met who did always talks about SWG's amazing crafting. I would like to experience something like that.

At the start of every weekend, we catch up with the Massively staff members and ask them, "What are you playing this week?" (Otherwise known as: WRUP!) Join us to see what we're up to in and out of game -- and catch us in the comments to let us know what you're playing, too!
