The Queue: So when is patch 5.2 releasing again?

Adam Holisky

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky (@adamholisky) will be your host today.

Alex warned me about yesterday's Queue after he wrote it. I just laughed. Then this morning I woke up and looked at the comments.

I thought about including a question on something controversial that shouldn't be so in WoW in this Queue, but I decided I'd save that for another day. Why? Not because it's not a good discussion to have, but because I'm having to AFK this week a bit and I didn't want to make Alex's life writing the Queue tomorrow more difficult.

Oh but it's coming my friend... it's coming...

Mortirre asked:

I'm angry. Blizzard said 5.2 was supposed to be this week, but it's not. When is it happening?

Probably next week -- although I'm not promising anything, and Blizzard certainly isn't too. There's just too many variables that can stop a patch from dropping, and the community must become aware of this if we're going to get release date estimates. Blizzard has always (correctly) been very skidish about releasing dates because they don't want people up in arms when that date isn't met. So let's not all get up in arms about this.

What's the sword in this pic?

I couldn't remember, but thanks to the friendly folks on Twitter, we have an answer. It's The Sun Eater from Mechanar.

Icaro asked:

Q for the Q. Do you think that MOP will at some point be more "alt friendly" ? Back in cata, I had 7 alts (Shamman, Paladin, Rogue, Druid, Death Knight, Priest and Warrior), most if not all of them in decent raiding gear (2 of them actually made it beyond the 400 item level by the time MOP hit) and with all of the cata reps at exalted.

I think that depends on what your definition of alt friendly is.

Remember back in the day it was a big deal if you had two raiding level characters. Sure everyone had alts, but a very very veeeeeery small number had alts that could just jump into AQ40 or SWP. Your alts might have some MC gear or Kara gear, but that wasn't acceptable for the later raids.

Then, as things often do, change.

In Wrath it became almost the norm for people to have multiple characters ready to enter ICC. It wasn't a big deal to gear up an alt -- it was fun, sure, but the hard fought gear on the main was essentially valueless as characters could easily obtain it, not as a function of skill, but as a function of time. Spend enough hours collecting JP, and you're geared.

The same held true to Cataclysm -- spend enough time collecting JP, running the new instances, and hitting LFR and you'll be set on your alt. It might only take a good player a couple weeks to do this, if not sooner. Gear wasn't as devalued then because more people were able to make the jump to heroic raids and obtain gear for their mains, but things still were not as they should be.

Now in Mists you have a situation where we're basically back to the way things were in Classic WoW. Your main is your main and it's known because it's got the best gear and all the necessary rep. Sure, some of you might have a couple other characters that are in various stages of gearing, but it'd bet my paycheck that your main is still the best geared.

This has lead to an odd situation that has essentially redefined what it means to have an alt. And alt is not a character you're going to be jumping into Throne of Thunder with, but instead is a character you'll run around and do some dungeons or LFR on. It's not a character that's going to replace your main anytime soon (unless you put in a lot of work); instead your alt will just be something to have fun with.

So is Mists alt friendly? Yes, it is. It's just not in the way people have been used to for the past five years.

Personally, I'm digging the way Mists is handling alts.
