Refresh Roundup: week of March 11th, 2013

Your smartphone and / or tablet is just begging for an update. From time to time, these mobile devices are blessed with maintenance refreshes, bug fixes, custom ROMs and anything in between, and so many of them are floating around that it's easy for a sizable chunk to get lost in the mix. To make sure they don't escape without notice, we've gathered every possible update, hack, and other miscellaneous tomfoolery we could find during the last week and crammed them into one convenient roundup. Official Android updates

  • Sony Xperia J: Sony has gone ahead and officially announced an upgrade to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). The update should be available for OTA installation, but if not, can always be downloaded and installed via either PC Companion or Bridge for Mac. [Sony]

  • Sony Xperia TL: Previously available for download via PC Companion, AT&T has announced an OTA update to Android 4.1 for this smartphone. Along with the new OS, users will now find Superior Auto and HDR modes within the camera app, along with the ability to view full text messages within the notification window. [AT&T]

  • ASUS Transformer Pad TF300: ASUS has released the Android 4.2.1 full recovery image for this tablet. [Android Police]

  • Galaxy Nexus: Android 4.2.1 is now available as an OTA update from Rogers, Telus, Wind and Videotron. [MobileSyrup 1, 2]

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1: Verizon Wireless has announced an update to Android 4.1 for these two tablets. Meanwhile, Sprint has released a similar update for the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. [Android Police, Sprint]

  • Motorola Droid RAZR HD: Verizon's released a small update for this smartphone (and its Maxx variant) that's said to bring improvements to call quality, WiFi connectivity, video streaming and low-light image capture. [Android Community]

  • Motorola Electrify 2: US Cellular has released Android 4.1 as an OTA update for this smartphone. [Motorola]

  • LG Optimus L9: Handset owners in Australia, Thailand and throughout Europe are reporting that an update to Android 4.1 is available for this smartphone. Meanwhile, the factory recovery files for many of these regions have been made available for download via the forums of xda-developers. [Engadget Spanish]

Unofficial Android updates, custom ROMs and misc. hackery

  • CyanogenMod: Nightly builds of CyanogenMod 10.1 are now available for the Galaxy R, Galaxy S III (C Spire), Optimus L5, Optimus L9 and Galaxy Note II (US Cellular). [Android Police 1, 2]

Other platforms

  • Windows Phone 7.8: This week, Microsoft released version 7.10.8862.114 of its legacy mobile OS. The update is said to resolve issues with Live Tiles, but it also disables syncing with Google contacts and calendars. [WMPoweruser 1, 2]

  • BlackBerry Z10: While the phone isn't yet officially available from AT&T, that hasn't stopped the carrier from rolling out BlackBerry OS 10.0.10.88 for the Z10. Meanwhile, EE is distributing BlackBerry OS 10.0.10.90 to it's subscribers, which is said to bring improvements to the camera, battery life and performance of third-party apps. [CrackBerry 1, 2]

  • Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820: This week, Nokia announced a firmware update for this pair of smartphones that's said to bring performance and stability improvements. Specifically, users can expect enhancements for automatic brightness level adjustments and better touchscreen operation while on a phone call. [Nokia Developer Blog]

  • Nokia Lumia 620: A firmware update is in the pipeline for this smartphone that brings greater system stability and enhanced picture quality. For one, Nokia suggests that users can expect proper camera exposure when shooting with the flash in bright light conditions. [Nokia Developer Blog]

  • Nokia 808 PureView and Nokia 701: A telephony update is available that's said to bring quality improvements to these two smartphones. [All About Symbian]

  • BlackBerry Bold 9900: AT&T has released BlackBerry OS 7.1.0.862 as an OTA update for this QWERTY handset. [CrackBerry]
