Apple's midrange smartphone basically takes the guts of the newly-discontinued iPhone 5 and wraps them in a polycarbonate plastic shell. It may lack the upgraded processor of the iPhone 5s, but the 5c is still tasty enough to earn a 95 gdgt Score. It's not all old news on the inside however, the 5c does sport a bigger battery and better front-facing camera than its ancestor.

Samsung's Galaxy-branded tablet doesn't induce the same squeals of delight as its smartphone line, but the Note 10.1 is still a solid performer. It earned a gdgt Score of 80 thanks in large part to its handy S Pen, that both graphic artists and casual doodlers alike should appreciate. Its screen resolution falls short of high-end tablets like the 4th-gen iPad, but sometimes you've got to make sacrifices in the name of frugality and styli.

Frequent travelers put off by trackpads and touchscreens need a reliable wireless mouse. This Microsoft product garners praise for its clean look and comfortable feel, earning it favorable comparisons with the far more expensive 6000 model. While the 3500 lacks piles of programmable buttons of some higher-priced competitors, but who needs them if all you're doing is reading Engadget and editing some spreadsheets.
