Summer is over. I know, it's definitely not something you want to talk about. The cold weather will be rolling in soon, and now it's time to focus on something that is a little more fun: your dorm room.

It's time to put your head in the books and get the education you need to start your career.

But this doesn't have to be all about business. We have six gadgets that will make your dorm a little more like home – and a lot more fun to be in.

1. Reading Light

You'll be doing a lot of reading while in your dorm. Professors have a way of assigning homework right before a long weekend, or if you're one of the unlucky ones, you'll have a professor that tells you the exam on Monday will span 8 chapters in your Physics 101 book.

Beam n Read's hands-free lights allow you to have light for:
  • Walking
  • Working in dark rooms
  • Quilting
  • Reading
If you have a roommate that needs to sleep in complete darkness, this light allows you to be a courteous roommate.

2. Zolt's Multi-Port USB Charger

Smartphones, tablets, laptops – everything has cords. And the one thing you need the most in today's technology-driven world is a USB charger. The Zolt allows you to use one single power outlet and turn it into a three-port USB charger.

Small and compact, this charger allows you to charge:
  • Laptops
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
All at one time. The six-foot power cord allows you to be far from a power outlet, and this multi-port charger also rotates 80 degrees to allow for charging even in small spaces.

3. Sous Vide Machine

You don't have to pack on those "freshman 15" anymore. A Sous Vide Machine allows you to cook without a grill or oven. You can even cook steak right in your dorm. Don't believe me? Check out this article if you want to impress dates.

How does this work?

All you need is airtight plastic bags (BPA-free of course), and water takes care of the rest. This is the simple way to cook even in a dorm.

4. Retro Game Console via Raspberry Pi

Do you miss Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Metroid and all of those other retro games from your childhood? You're not alone. Now, you can make your own emulator that acts as a retro game console with Raspberry Pi.

It will cost you $35 or so, but you'll be able to play games for the following consoles (and dozens more):
  • Atari
  • Game Boy
  • Nintendo
  • Super NES
  • Neo Geo
  • Sega Genesis
And Raspberry Pi has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which allows you to make your own custom media station (the link above has a tutorial on how to get started).

5. Electric Tea Kettle

Electric tea kettles are the safe way to brew your own tea. Flameless, just plug your kettle into an electrical outlet, fill with water and set it to brew. There are a variety of different models available, and some come equipped with a mesh filter to make steeping tea even easier.

High-end models also detach from the base to make pouring a breeze.

With automatic shutoff protection (on decent models), you'll be able to brew your own tea effortlessly.

If you like Ramen Noodles, an electric tea kettle will allow you to make the perfect batch of Ramen Noodles each and every time. Some models even offer variable temperature controls, which is a nice added perk.

6. Neck Massager

Maybe you're beat after hours of studying and a stress pop quiz (everyone is, I think). A neck massager may be the next best thing to going to a real masseuse. Simply wrap the massager around your neck, choose the massage type and intensity, and melt into bliss.

Some models come with heat, too.

You'll find the following massages are most common:
  • Shiatsu
  • Vibration
  • Percussion
If your neck is cramped and killing you from too much studying, you deserve to treat yourself with a neck massager.
