Over the past century, technology has transformed human life as we know it. As human beings, we have developed and engineered tools that have made work and life easier in many ways, affecting all facets of human life. One such facet is education. Education is by far one of the most important facets of human life and development. Through education, information and knowledge are disseminated from one generation to another creating the need to discover and research to create new knowledge. Technology has, over a considerable span of time, transformed the processes involved in education for both the student and the instructor. This article will critically look into the ways in which technology is changing education for both the student and the instructor.

The Internet

The Internet is by far one of the most innovative and influential inventions in the world. Education has benefited immensely from the Internet in numerous ways. However, there are also some negative effects that the Internet has had on education.

The Internet as a Library

The Internet is the largest archive of information in the history of the human civilization. The Internet is fundamentally the biggest library in the world having the most recent information on any given topic or subject area. All information from a given subject area from anywhere around the world can be found on the Internet as it consolidates all the information on these subject areas. Any student, instructor or researcher can obtain all the information they require to conduct research from previous research all from the Internet.

As much as the Internet is a useful tool as a source of information, many students have and are using it for the wrong purposes. There have been numerous cases of plagiarism by students. Many students opt to take the easy way in writing their assignments by simply copy pasting information from other previous work from different people.

The Internet as a Class

Many students and instructors in the 21st century have developed the knack for efficiency. This has resulted in both students and instructors engaging in other obligations and responsibilities while at the same time maintaining their pursuit for education. This has led to the development of e-classes where the students and instructors carry out classes online. This has revolutionized the way education is disseminated, allowing the students to get in touch with the instructor without having to be within one given physical location. This has helped international students gain qualifications in education without having to relocate from their countries of residence.

Computers

The computer is another important invention in the history of the human race. It has revolutionized education in numerous ways. The computer has enabled both the student and the instructor of the 21st century to move from the analogue and cumbersome way of manually writing class reports, assignments and theses to the digital way of producing such documents. This has reduced the clutter associated with manually written documents in the case of a class with many students.

This digital frontier that has been set in motion by computers has also enabled instructors engage the teaching process from a digital perspective. Through the use of projectors, instructors can be able to expedite the process of disseminating information by having their notes, theories and facts on a given subject or topic displayed in a simple and effective way.

Anti-Plagiarism Software

Plagiarism is one of the negative effects technology has had on education. With many students cheating in their term papers, reports and assignments, it has become crucial that education managers and instructors ensure the quality of education. This has been done through the development of plagiarism detection software. This software cross-checks all submitted work against any and all information databases on the Internet including websites, e-journals and even social media. This invention has become crucial to education systems all around the world.

Wrap Up

Education has been revolutionized by technology making the education process easier, faster and more effective through the Internet and computers. This has, however, been faced by some challenges such as plagiarism which lowers the quality of education. Nonetheless, technology has provided a counter measure in the form of anti-plagiarism software. In essence, technology has, over a considerable span of time, transformed the processes involved in education for both the student and the instructor.
