FreedomPop Review: Legit Free Data, or Too Good to Be True?

Jesse Boskoff, @jesseboskoff

If you are like many people, you are probably trying to find ways to trim your budget without sacrificing the comforts of modern living. Phone contracts from companies like Verizon and AT&T are among some of the most costly budget expenses. Fortunately, you may be able to replace these costly phone and Internet services with FreedomPop.

What is FreedomPop?

FreedomPop is a provider of Internet and mobile phone services in the United States. According to the official FreedomPop website, the company is dedicated to providing free Internet and cheap phone services to people everywhere. Users of FreedomPop are not bound by contracts, and they can cancel their plan at any time. This monthly subscription model gives users the freedom to continue using the service only if they are completely satisfied.

Free Data

While FreedomPop certainly does not offer an unlimited amount of high-speed Internet, it does provide a free 1 GB data plan. If you are a light user who does not frequently download large files, FreedomPop can be an excellent home Internet service provider. 1 GB of data is suitable for browsing the Internet, checking your emails, and using most social media sites.

FreedomPop's basic Internet service is likely unsuitable for power-users who rely on the Internet for work or entertainment. Streaming services and online games require a large amount of data, so you will likely need their premium service for these tasks.

Attractive Features

This Internet and mobile service provider offers numerous services. Users often appreciate that FreedomPop:
  • Offers free calling and texting between FreedomPop users
  • Does not charge additional fees for international calls
  • Provides free calling and texting from WiFi hotspots
With the basic free plan, users can send 500 texts per month. They may also enjoy 200 free minutes of phone calls.

By paying $7.99 per month, you can receive all of the features of the free plan, but you can send an unlimited number of texts per month. With the $10.99 per month plan, your calling minutes are also unlimited. And as PT Money points out in its updated review, there's also a WiFi calling option for $5 per month.

FreedomPop's Premium Service

If you rely heavily on the Internet to complete your daily tasks, consider purchasing FreedomPop's $20 plan. This premium Internet service provides users with unlimited data, calls, and texts. Since this plan does not have a data limit, you can use the hotspot feature on smartphones. This transforms your phone into a mobile router that can be used to access an Internet with a PC or other mobile devices. This is an affordable way to enjoy online gaming, work collaboration, and other data-heavy tasks.

Activating a Phone

To use FreedomPop, you need an eligible smartphone. FreedomPop does not have service contracts, so they do not subsidize the costs of phones. This means that the in-store prices of their phones are more expensive than devices sold by traditional phone companies. However, the absence of a contract means that you will own the phone as soon as you pay for it. FreedomPop also does not have the opportunity to apply budget-breaking fees.

If you would like to save additional money, you can buy an eligible phone from a third-party seller, or you can use a phone that you currently own. While FreedomPop is a low-cost Internet and mobile service, it does not use low-quality phones. Samsung Galaxies, iPhones, and various android devices can be used with FreedomPop.

The Verdict

FreedomPop's free services can be really appealing, but most Internet users will want data upgrades. However, the unlimited plan is affordable at $20 per month, and phone costs are reasonable, making this a compelling option for anyone on a budget.
