Augmented Reality heisst im Falle von Layar, dass man Informationen (Layer genannt) in die Smartphonekamera eingeblendet bekommt, die das Gesehene näher beschreiben und mit Daten versehen. Dazu nutzt die App die Daten von GPS, eingebautem Kompass und der Kamera. Layar soll zunächst für Android in den Niederlanden erscheinen und umsonst im Android Market erscheinen, später aber auch fürs iPhone 3G S und noch dieses Jahr in Deutschland, England und den USA erhältlich sein.
