Engadget Review

The Alcatel Idol 4S’ biggest selling point is not what came in the box, but the box itself, which doubles as a VR headset. The $350 (pre-order price) device comes with its own VR viewer so you can immediately start exploring immersive content when you get it. If not for the bargain of a bundle, the Idol 4S would have a hard time standing out from other, better-performing phones in this price range.

I don’t think anyone buying the Idol 4S would be disappointed by the phone itself, they just might be disappointed with what they might be missing out on.

OK, so it doesn’t quite beat the brilliant OnePlus 3 in the style stakes. Glass backs are all just a bit 2014, and it feels like there’s a fair share of plastic in there too. But the Idol 4S more than makes up for those minor flaws with some top-notch hardware.

We can’t help but feel like the Alcatel Idol 4S is the poor man’s Samsung Galaxy S7. ... the Alcatel Idol 4S makes a killer alternative for half of the price — just don’t expect amazing camera performance. It also one-ups the popular OnePlus 3 in many respects.

Alcatel's Idol 4S may come with a VR headset, but it's still not a good deal.

It has ... most of the major features you look for in a modern smartphone. The problem is that the game has changed. ... when placed against that competition, it's clear that the Idol 4S is an inferior value in most respects.

If you’re looking for a well-rounded mid-range smartphone with a great audio experience and a handful of bundles accessories in the $400-range, you can’t go wrong with the Alcatel Idol 4S.

The Alcatel Idol 4S is a unique unlocked Android phone that comes with a VR headset and plenty of other accessories, offering good value for the price.

The Idol 4S undoubtedly delivers several welcome improvements over the cheaper Idol 3 and a worthy successor it is, but in an increasingly-competitive industry, the Idol 4S may not be the best smartphone you can buy for $399.

You can safely add the Alcatel Idol 4s to the growing list of good, not-expensive Android phones. Though I’m not the biggest fan of its materials, it doesn’t get much outright wrong, and its existence is a good thing. If you take the plunge, you will more than likely be happy with it.

While it seems that the manufacturer is trying to win us over with extras, there's a lot to be said for keeping the phone more straightforward, delivering a solid, fewer-frills smartphone at a lower price. Because at $400, the Idol 4S probably isn't the first Android we'd recommend.
