Engadget Review

The Fire TV Cube is a glimpse at where voice controlled TV viewing is going — but it’s not quite the future yet. Some voice commands are genuinely useful, but you’ll likely be frustrated by the things it can’t do. Most people would be better off with a Fire TV and a separate Echo Dot.

Pros
  • Voice searching is convenient
  • Still a capable Fire TV 4K streaming device
  • Brings in many useful Alexa features
Cons
  • Alexa still can’t handle common video viewing commands
  • Almost twice the price of the $70 Fire TV

The Amazon Fire TV Cube's well-designed voice controls make it a superb alternative to a standard universal remote, especially for simpler systems.

While I’m a fan of Alexa and the Fire TV, and the Cube combines both of those things well, the pile of my remotes in my living room isn’t going anywhere.

Amazon, over the past decade, has established itself in hardware by making low-cost, simple, and incredibly useful products, whether that’s been e-readers, TV sticks, or Echo speakers. The Fire TV Cube is an oddball in the mix. It’s a bet on our voice-filled future, but in its initial form, the stuff beyond basic commands gets lost in translation.

No, I can’t promise that you’ll never pick up a remote control again. Yet with just about all major set-top boxes pushing some sort of voice control, so far Alexa on the Amazon Fire TV Cube seems the most successful at delivering everyday functionality without frustration. Alexa, take a bow.

The Fire TV Cube wants to replace your remote with voice commands, but Alexa isn't up for the challenge.

The Amazon Fire TV Cube is an excellent marriage of an Echo speaker and a Fire TV device that's able to control your living room.

Today, the Fire TV Cube will probably satisfy only home theater geeks and families already enamored with Alexa and curious to watch its TV intelligence grow. But there are enough interesting ideas in it that any TV lover has reason to stay tuned.

Mashable
Amazon's Fire TV Cube is a good glimpse at how Alexa can be used to control your home entertainment system, but it's in need of a lot of polish.

If you were already thinking about buying a Fire TV, however, you should definitely consider spending an extra $50 on the Fire TV Cube. By owning it, you will definitely get all the great perks of owning a Fire TV, because the new Cube works just like a standard $70 Fire TV dongle, including support for 4K and HDR content. You can still buy the standard Fire TV, too, but the Cube will set you up for the voice-controlled future we’ve been promised. The bright side is that the device’s slow software can probably be improved with a software update, and as Amazon loves to say, Alexa is always getting better. So the Fire TV Cube might get better soon, too.

The Amazon Fire TV Cube combines the best features of the Fire TV with the hands-free voice control and Alexa capabilities of the Echo, in a single media streamer.
