Engadget Review

After years in the darkness, the more affordable Kindle finally gets an illuminated display. This squeezes the gap between this and the Paperwhite to the point where you’ll really have to want waterproofing or more storage to justify paying the higher price. The lower resolution display won’t please everyone, but for the bulk of your reading you likely won’t ever notice, making the All New Kindle attractive to both upgraders and those new to e-readers alike.

Saving money on a Kindle typically has typically meant sacrificing features that would provide the most enjoyable reading experience. That’s no longer necessary. With its adjustable front lighting and upgraded screen and E Ink, the All-new Kindle finally opens the full Kindle experience to budget-minded book lovers.

Although the Paperwhite remains the Kindle to get, the cheapest Kindle now includes an integrated light, plus an improved design that makes it more appealing.

If you simply can’t put a good book down, night or day, the new Kindle is the best budget e-reader available.

This is a brilliant Kindle. Easily the best at this price from any manufacturer thanks to its slick design, attractive interface and capable frontlight. True, nothing quite matches the luxuriousness of the Oasis or the waterproof practicality of the Paperwhite, but for most people this a Kindle that is phenomenal value and a real performer.

I think most people shopping for a new Kindle should buy the Kindle Paperwhite, mainly because the text is much sharper and you get twice the storage. But if you're coming from an old Kindle and you loved it and just want a lght, then the new Kindle is a good buy. And if you've never had an e-reader before and don't want to spend a lot of money before you know how often you'll use one, then consider the new Kindle to get your started. You get a lot for $90 without breaking the bank.

Amazon's cheapest Kindle works fine for reading books, but the low resolution e-ink screen might be a turnoff.

The biggest praise I can give this new Kindle is that, whereas before I’d have said opting for the Kindle Paperwhite was a no-brainer for most readers, that’s no longer the case. The addition of screen lighting makes the Kindle 2019 much more compelling. Yes, you miss out on waterproofing, and the higher-resolution screen. They’re nice-to-have features though, rather than, well, something that makes the difference between being able to read in the dark or not. There’s still a place for Amazon’s more expensive models, but this $90 Kindle gives the entry-level a new lease of life.

It’s by no means the best ereader money can buy, but introducing a backlight to the cheapest Kindle means it’s now much more difficult to justify buying a more expensive, top-end ereader. If you’re always reading, the Kindle Paperwhite or Oasis may be more for you, but as an all-round and affordable option it’s very difficult to fault the latest Amazon Kindle.
