Engadget Review

As far as annual software updates go, Sierra is a fairly modest one. Some of the most practical features like Optimized Storage and Desktop and Documents in the cloud, are also the least flashy. Conversely, the additions that have gotten the most attention -- think: Siri integration and Auto Unlock -- don't always work as expected. You should absolutely update to Sierra, but remember: It's probably the small stuff you'll appreciate most.

As usual, MacOS Sierra is a free update. There’s no reason not to upgrade if you have a compatible Mac. But this mediocre update is not going to placate Mac fans who feel slighted by Apple’s outdated hardware.

Will Sierra meaningfully improve the Mac? That’s up to you and your wallet. Sierra’s best features require you to pay Apple month after month, with no end in sight.

macOS Sierra enters the fray as a solid, dependable operating system ... It offers clear benefits when used in conjunction with iPhones and Apple Watches, while the addition of Siri and iCloud Drive are a boon for working with files and retrieving information on the desktop.

There aren't the big sweeping changes with macOS Sierra that we've seen with previous updates, and the flashy, hyped-up features aren't hugely exciting, but there's a lot else to like.

A worthy successor to OS X El Capitan, macOS Sierra is a solid operating system that adds a lot of functionality and makes the Mac play nicer with other iDevices.

Mac users want the most robust platform they can get. I’ve been using Sierra all summer long. In my testing, it’s a solid update. There aren’t many new bells and whistles. Sierra lets you work more efficiently than ever. And that’s all I wanted.

Siri makes the Mac more useful and convenient, deep learning makes it more insightful, and APFS promises to make it more efficient and more secure. Those ... combined with everything else, make macOS Sierra ... one of the most important Mac software updates in years.

Together, these are certainly strong advances in a still-familiar world, designed to enhance how you use your Mac in such small ways you may hardly notice at times. But try taking these advances away and, oh boy, then you’ll see how much difference they make.
