Until the release of the boxee box, I was convinced that boxee would win the set-top box wars because it was the only true UI that you could replace cable TV with. With the release of the box we now found out that they're trying to work with cable companies more and because of that they've removed alot of the sources where they use to use to serve up shows. That means most shows are no longer available on boxee or are very hard to find. They also announced that hulu is finally planning on working with them to bring hulu plus to boxee. What that means is now they're removed hulu as a source and no longer fool hulu into letting media play. When you try to watch hulu from the box now, you get a message saying that they're working on bringing hulu plus to boxee. Netflix was announced but isn't out yet. Vudu, which was announced and was supposed to be available at launch, says coming soon when you click on it. They've also removed great apps that use to work like last.fm and they HD ability in youtube (although with the addition of a mouse in-browser, you can now set the resolution yourself.) The boxee forums are raging with complaints and calls for boycotting the service all together. The words "bait and switch" can be found on many forum posts. This was supposed to be the box to rule all set-top boxes. Unfortunetly it pales in comparison to it's own beta iteration. To make matters worse, the boxee crew is trying really hard to pretend that nothing is wrong. Many twitter posts are being ignored. Lets hope something is done soon; there are talks of hacking the boxee box into the XBMC box and calling it a day.

This little box has SO MUCH potential. But to me, until it's got Netflix and Hulu Plus, it's much closer to a fancy paperweight than an everyday device. But it sure feels like right around the corner it will be getting that daily use...

My Boxee Box crashes A LOT! It would be nice if I could identify my media from one boxee device and have some sort of library file that other boxee devices could use. I've had to re-identify media so many times it makes me not want to recommend this product. I give it a high rating because I have faith in D-link and Boxee to get this product right but I can't really recommend it over other devices right now because of the problems I have with it. 10/100 Ethernet port is too slow on a busy LAN to stream local HD content, wireless N is nice when not many hosts are active on the wLAN.

I was a pretty avid user of the boxee software ever since it's fork from XMBC, installing it on every device I could even the first gen Apple TV, so I had high hopes for a dedicated box designed to get fast updates and little worry of lost functionality. The small cutaway box design was nothing like I've ever seen and was glad that the boxee crew took the time to make a great looking device. Setup was a bit more of a pain. It took me a few hours for the remote to start working, so I was relegated to using the iOS remote app. I have no reason why it suddenly started working, but it did eventually. After getting setup with apps and overscan with my TV (why do I have to even do this anymore), I was left to configure my network shares. I spent hours with the initial setup and it never worked, only to discover that because I used the Windows Live Essentials suite that SMB shares didn't work (this was fixed roughly a month after release, which was far too long). Over the years, boxee has worked to streamline their UI, but it's just not there yet. Things still don't seam to make sense when browsing and I, constantly, find myself in the wrong place, which would always lead me to clicking on every menu just to figure out where I needed to go to watch one video. I was left pretty disappointed. What I wanted was a seamless experience with my home/downloaded video streamed to my TV with a smattering of online services (there was no Netflix at the time of release), but what I got was basically a frustratingly limited video viewing experience, concluding with a resell of the boxee box just last week. Was this the box to get the mainstream on board with dedicated settop boxes, no. There are a ton of other settop boxes, that are both cheaper and offer a far more streamlined experience, such as the Roku boxes or the diminutive 2nd-gen Apple TV.
