How we score

The Engadget Score is a unique ranking of products based on extensive independent research and analysis by our expert editorial and research teams. The Global Score is arrived at only after curating hundreds, sometimes thousands of weighted data points (such as critic and user reviews).

Engadget Summary

Dell created an affordable tablet with the Venue 7, but at the expense of weak battery life and an average display. CNET says the 1280 x 800 display "isn't particularly high or impressive" when compared to other tablets, but "HD video still looked clear and sharp." The dual-core processor may not be as powerful as some competitors, but AllThingsD finds the Venue 7 "fast enough not to be annoying." Where things really start to fall off is the Venue 7's battery life, with Laptop Magazine squeezing out about six hours in their battery test, "an hour less" than the category average. To hit a price point of $149 you have to cut some corners, and it's evident Dell opted to do so with the battery and display. If you can stomach the drawbacks and don't want to shell out the extra dough for a Kindle or a Nexus, the Venue 7 can still deliver decent performance.
