Intel has finally made a DIY NUC kit with room for a real graphics card, and it’s spectacular. It delivers most of the power and flexibility you’d want from a desktop in a tiny case. The only problem is that you’ll pay dearly for it.

  • Useful modular hardware
  • Tiny case
  • Excellent cooling
  • It fits a real GPU!

Tom's Hardware
The Intel NUC 9 Extreme Kit (Ghost Canyon) is a pricey barebones PC that fits a discrete GPU. The Compute Element with mobile Intel CPU makes for an exciting new form factor, though.

Digital Trends
Intel's NUC 9 Extreme Kit is a unique vision of computing, but far from perfect.

The bar has been reset for mini PCs: With deep upgrade options and a unique internal architecture based on Intel's Compute Element, the game-changing NUC 9 Extreme brings near-tower power down to the truly small.

HotHardware
As it stands today, the Intel NUC 9 Extreme is a really cool product, that brings powerful hardware and a bit of DIY flavor into an attractive, compact form factor. There is a premium to be paid to play with a system of this type, but if the idea of a high-performance small form factor system is appealing to you, the Intel NUC 9 Extreme is an innovative solution that worthy of your consideration.

Intel has pulled off an impressive feat of engineering and innovation with the new NUC 9 Extreme kits. The ability to upgrade your systems as easy as a GPU swap, will likely capture plenty of new SFF builders.

he Intel NUC 9 Extreme kit will likely get off to a slow start, but we hope Intel sticks with the design. It took nearly a decade for the Intel NUC to get to where it is at and we hope that Intel dedicates the same amount of time to get this series off the ground. Intel will need to establish the performance per liter category and that will take some time to do.

That’s really the beauty of this NUC kit; it’s the best of both worlds. Unlike a pure pre-built machine, you get to customize this PC while not worrying about cable management or other time-consuming aspects of building your own rig. You can pick the components that really matter and get to gaming a lot faster.

Assuming that Intel can build upon upon its initial success with the Compute Element initiative, the future of the desktop PC market does look bright.

For its innovative design, high performance, and better than expected noise and temperature levels, I find this a worthy of consideration for anyone looking for desktop-class performance, and upgradable components, in as small a device as possible.
